Your Challenge Today?

Page 4: Engineering Solutions Event November 25, 2014. Physicists ●Develop mathematical models ●Make predictions & test them ●Adjust their models

Your Materials

● Pre-made marshmallow launcher● 10 dried (NON EDIBLE) marshmallows● Table for record-keeping● Materials for making a 2nd launcher or improving

your given launcher, if you want

Your Goals

1. Learn to load and shoot your marshmallow launcher.

2. Gather data about the angle and “pull” and how they affect the distance.

3. Test, collect data, and refine to figure out how to make your launcher shoot different distances.

4. Communicate your process and progress to judges.

Scoring

Judges’ Scores + Accuracy to 3 Targets

2 targets are set at 5 meters and 10 meters

A 3rd target will be randomly placed based on a dice roll.

You get 3 shots to hit each target.

The Judging Process

1. Place your launcher on the edge of the table/ground/in your hand. Adjust your pull and angle for the first target.

2. Launch your marshmallow at the target. The judges will record your distance from the center of the target.

3. Based on your first shot, adjust accordingly.4. Take 2 more shots on the target.5. The judges will move the target to its second position.6. Repeat the process as you did for the first target.7. The judges will move the target to the random position.8. Repeat the process as you did for the first target.

Please Consider Safety

● Look before you shoot!● No shooting towards people (including yourself)!● Don’t eat the marshmallows. They’re really old and

gross and have all been on the floor. Seriously.● It’s okay to go, with your coach, to a nearby area of the

building if you need a little more space, but please be quiet and respectful of classes.
