The quality of the air we breath isincreasingly becoming a world wideconcern. In the United States all levels
of government are involved in the regulationof air quality. On the federal level, the CleanAir Act (CAA) and its amendments wereenacted by Congress to oversee and regu-late the impact of air pollution caused byindustries within the United States. TheEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA) wascreated as the primary support and imple-mentation body for the CAA. The actualenforcement of the CAA is delegated to localgovernment regulatory agencies called AirQuality Management Districts (AQMD’s). Insome areas, such as Southern California, theAQMD, South Coast Air Quality Manage-ment District (SCAQMD), has found it neces-sary to evaluate and regulate sources of pol-lutants not previously recognized. In thepast, the need for pollution control equip-ment in commercial kitchen exhaust sys-tems has been required only in particular sit-uations, such as an existing high rise build-ing, where it was impractical to run new ductwork to the roof. Increasingly, environmen-tal control agencies are making moredemands for the elimination or reduction ofpollutants from commercial kitchen exhaustsystems. In fact current legislation wasadopted by SCAQMD in November 1997requiring pollution control devices overchain driven and under-fired char-broilers. Itis probable that such legislation will beapplied to other regions in the U.S., in thenear future.
The Carroll pollution control unit, trade-marked EnvironAir® Air Purification Unit(APU), utilizes a three-stage filter system toeliminate particulate grease and smoke fromthe exhaust air stream. Optionally available
is an odor removal module that, through theuse of odor media trays or a liquid odorspray cabinet, effectively controls the mal-odors produced by commercial kitchencooking. Carroll has a longer history indesigning and engineering these type unitsthan any other manufacturer, having firstdeveloped pollution control units in the mid-1970’s. Carroll has steadily improved andrefined the EnvironAir® APU over the past 25years. Today, the EnvironAir® APU offers thefoodservice operator the most efficient andeconomical pollution control equipment onthe market. Additionally, the EnvironAir®
APU system has been engineered to operatewith all Carroll series ventilators in order toprovide the optimum in filter life. The Envi-ronAir® APU is available in models to coverany CFM range between 500 and 40,000. AllEnvironAir® APU models are UL and ULCListed and meet all requirements of NFPA96, the local authority having jurisdictionand national building codes.
From throbbing city hearts such as Boston,Las Vegas, New York, Philadelphia, Torontoand Vancouver; to far-away trading centerslike Dubai and Sharm El Sheik; from bustlingcorporate centers to the tranquility of Mid-west schools, Floridian oases and suburbancountry clubs; Carroll’s EnvironAir® APU’shave been instrumental in resolving thechallenges of commercial air pollution.Ruggedly constructed, yet uncomplicatedindesign, the EnvironAir® APU is truly a silentsentry indispensible to ever so many com-mercial cooking operations.

The EnvironAir® APU is available in a variety of configu-rations to meet the foodservice operators requirementsfor the elimination of particulate grease, smoke, and/or
odor from the kitchen exhaust air stream. Integrated or standalone modules are available for the blower/fan, filter, andodor control functions of the system. Installation can be in aceiling space above the kitchen ventilator, or in a remote loca-tion such as a utility room, or on the roof top. The EnvironAir®
APU provides the foodservice operator an economical solu-tion to problems which in the past would have prevented theinstallation of a commercial kitchen operation. EnvironAir®
solves the problems associated with the following installa-tion problems:
NEW HIGH-RISE BUILDINGSEnvironAir® provides the economical solution to the cost ofrunning expensive 16 gauge all welded ductwork to the roofof new high rise buildings. The cleaned kitchen exhaust airfrom the EnvironAir® unit can be exhausted out the side ofthe building at a minimum 10’ (3 meters) above ground levelor into another area of the building such as an undergroundparking garage. In the United States all ductwork is requiredto be 16 gauge all welded steel.
EXISTING HIGH-RISE BUILDINGSEnvironAir® is the solution to running kitchen exhaust ductwork in existing buildings where it is impossible or cost pro-hibitive to run all welded ductwork to the roof. The cleanedkitchen exhaust air from the EnvironAir® unit can be exhaust-ed out the side of the building at a minimum 10’ (3 meters)above ground level or into another area of the building suchas an underground parking garage. In the United States allductwork is required to be 16 gauge all welded steel.
MALL OPERATIONS WITH FOOD COURTSEnvironAir® provides pollution control for new and existingMall Food Court operations and the flexibility for futureexpansion of the system. Multiple hoods and APU filter sec-tions can be joined to common odor control and blower sec-tions of the system.
KITCHEN EXHAUST ODOR ABATEMENTEnvironAir® will effectively control the malodors producedfrom commercial cooking operations when equipped withthe optional Odor Control Section. This option addresses theproblems of commercial kitchens located near residentialareas or areas that are under pollution control requirementsfrom their local Air Quality Management District or otherlocal authorities.
REDUCED DUCTWORK COST IN CANADAIn Canada, and in conjunction with the EnvironAir® ULC List-ing, all exhaust ductwork downstream of the filter section canbe installed with standard HVAC requirements (non-welded,galvanized, standard clean air installation). Exhaust air canbe discharged at levels other than rooftop (i.e. side wall orparking garage), thereby eliminating costly continuouslywelded horizontal and vertical duct runs and fire barrier chas-es. Ductwork from the hood to the inlet of the EnvironAir®
unit is required to be 16 gauge all welded steel.

OPERATION Air Purification Unit
When equipped with the optional odor control sec-tion, the EnvironAir® APU can effectively control themalodors produced from commercial cooking. The
exhaust airstream from the filter section is purified of grease, lint, dirt and smoke but will still contain malodors producedfrom the cooking process. Control of these odors is accom-plished by passing the exhaust air- stream from the filter sec-tion through one of three odor control options offered byCarroll.
ENVIRONSAFE™Is a liquid specially formulated to safely and effectivelyremove malodors. The EnvironSafe™ liquid is sprayeddirectly into the exhaust air stream of the odor cabinet. Envi-ronSafe™ is a formulation of natural ingredients fromessential oils; it is non-toxic, biodegradable, water solubleand environmentally safe. EnvironSafe™ is not an enzymeor chemical mask, it works by encapsulating the odor to forma neutral substance. The combined molecular weight of themalodor and EnvironSafe™ causes the molecules to fall to alower atmospheric level and biodegrade naturally. A freshnatural scent results.
ACTIVATED ALUMINA SPHERES IMPREGNATED WITHPOTASSIUM PERMANGANATEIs an oxidizing media arranged in steel trays inside the odorcontrol section. As the exhaust air stream passes through thetrays, the media causes a chemical reaction, oxidation, thatbreaks the odor causing molecules into odorless naturalsubstances.
ACTIVATED CARBONIs an absorption/adsorption media arranged in steeltrays inside the odor control section. As the exhaustairstream passes through the trays, the media worksthrough a process of absorption and adsorption on the odorcausing molecules.
Also available is a 50/50 blend in equal amounts of activatedcarbon and alumina spheres impregnated with potassium permanganate.
ODOR CONTROL SECTION
The exhaust fan section includes a centrifugal blowerassembly constructed of a heavy gauge steel housingwith all seams continuously welded. The blower has a
steel backwardly inclined airfoil wheel of the non-overload-ing type, and all blades are continuously welded to both adeep spun inlet shroud and to the backplate. The blower isAMCA rated both for sound and air volume, UL and CSA List-ed, with a AISI C-1040 or C-1045 hot rolled and accuratelyturned and polished steel shaft. Bearings are grease lubri-cated, precision anti-friction ball and self aligning pillowblock type with lubricating nipples. Drives are V-belt with acapacity 25% greater than motor horsepower. The blowerand motor mounting base are equipped with anti-vibrationisolators. Oil resistant non-static belts are provided.
The discharge from the blower section can be Straight Through Out The Left Side Out The Right Side Vertically Up
The blower compartment is constructed with a fully remov-able combination access panel and hinged door on the driveside of the blower, allowing if necessary the completeremoval of the blower assembly during servicing. A fullyremovable access panel is provided on the opposite side ofthe blower compartment.

THE COMPLETE CARROLL AIR PURIFICATION SYSTEM
A complete Air Purification System will consistof Carroll’s high velocity ventilator(s), controlpanel, fire suppression system, and Environ-Air® APU consisting of filter, odor control, andfan sections. The EnvironAir® APU has beenengineered to work with all types of ventilators. However, it is highly recommended that a high efficiency grease extractor be used in con-junction with the EnvironAir® unit. Ventilatorssuch as Carroll’s high velocity W-2 andW-1 water wash series or DX dry extractorseries offer up to 95% grease extraction effi-ciency by weight. These ventilators help pro-vide the optimum in filter life for the APU. Addi-tionally, Carroll’s high velocity ventilators cansubstantially reduce the overall exhaust rateover differing types of cooking equipmentunder the same ventilator.

FAN LAWS
The following section includes engineering andtechnical data, guidelines and systemexplanations related to air moving and control
devices. Fan laws and system descriptions areconsistent with industry standards, definitions andaccepted practices. This information is provided toassist system designers in sizing, selecting anddefining their air moving and control systems as wellas explaining variables inherent in system design.
Of nine basic fan laws, four are of prime importanceto the understanding of ventilation systems. These, together with an appreciation of fan types, shouldhelp avoid most problems which cause poor airflowperformance. These four laws assume the same fanoperating with air at a constant density.
1. Airflow and fan speed are directly proportional.
CFM1 is the original flow rate in cu. ft. per minute.CFM2 is the desired flow rate in cu. ft. per minute.RPM1 is the original rotational speed of the fan.RPM2 is the desired rotational speed of the fan.
2. Pressure varies as the square of the speed orairflow.
P1 is the original static pressure.P2 is the desired static pressure.
3. Power varies as the cube of fan speed.
4. Fan Tip speed (FPM):Where T.S. =(D (in) X RPM X π)/12
D = Wheel Diameterπ = 3.14
EFFECT OF CHANGE IN DENSITY,

The resistance of a duct system is dependent on thedensity of the gas flowing through the system. A gasdensity of 0.075 lb/ft3 is standard in the fan industry.

SOUND POWER LEVELS
Since any mechanical device generates some soundenergy into the air, fans will create some noise.Because of the great number of factors influencing
sound output it is invalid to compare fans based on RPM,tip speed or outlet velocity. The only accurate basis ofcomparison is the sound power level generated by the fanat the required point of operation.
Having sound power levels for a specific fan at a specificoperating point allows the system designer to determinethe theoretical sound pressure level at any point in theoccupied space. AMCA Publication 303 and the ASHRAEGuides provide more information on this process. Anothertypical application of sound power levels is to comparesimilar fans. Generally differences of 6 dB in the 63 Hz bandand 3 dB in all other bands are considered insignificant.
System designers use many methods to predict acousticacceptability of an occupied space.
The A-weighted sound pressure level provides a singlenumber that corresponds well to the human judgement ofrelative loudness. OSHA bases their requirementsregarding exposure to noise on A-weighted sound pressurelevels. The disadvantage of this method is that A-weightedsound pressure levels do not provide information as to thequality of the sound. Noise Criteria (NC) curves are alsowidely used. To determine the NC level, the sound powerspectrum is compared to defined limits.
Each method relies on sound pressure level informationbecause the human ear “hears” sound pressurefluctuations, not sound power (watts). Sound pressure is afunction of the attenuation of the space and the distancefrom the source. Consider a 100 watt light bulb. It providesadequate light for a closet, but not for a classroom, and ina stadium it would be imperceptible. While the light sourcewas the same power (100 watts), the brightness levelchanged dramatically. Similarly, the same sound powerlevel (acoustical energy) produces greatly different soundpressure levels (noise).

The above values of full-load currents are typical formotors running at speeds usual for belted motors andmotors with normal torque characteristics. Motorsbuilt for low speeds (1200 RPM or less) or high torquesmay require more running current, and multi-speedmotors will have full-load current varying with speed,in which case the nameplate current ratings shall be used.
The voltages listed are rated motor voltages. Thecurrents listed shall be permitted for system voltageranges of 230 to 240 and 440 to 480 volts.
The table data shown above is from the NEC 1999edition, table 430-150.
