Using my left brain for problem solving and analysis,

and my right brain for intuition and creativity,

I apply tools and techniques of design to create functional and delightful products.

To me, great design improves lives,

brings meaning,

and empathizes with the user.

I strive to uncover unmet opportunities, frame the problem and innovate solutions

to meet the needs of the user, all with the iterative design process.

Wring it Out.After hand-washing a garment,

many people f ind it challenging

and time-consuming to wring out

excess water before hanging it to

dry. The goal of this project was to

design a product that gives users a

mechanica l advantage in wringing

their garments.

Reframing the Problem

After brainstorming, our team found an opportunity gap and planned to design a product for washing a single garment. User observations a nd interviews showed that drying a ga rment was actua lly more diff icu lt a nd time-consuming tha n washing one, so we changed ou r focus to re f lect that observation.

Kristina M

arrero | 305.281.9096 | knmarrero@

gmail.com

Early testing showed that the prototype removed up to 45% of the water in the garment in under fifteen seconds of use.

Prototyping and Next StepsOur team created a series of mock-ups for user testing and evaluation. Testing results showed that wringing was still the most effective method. Our proposed design makes the wringing motion easier by securing the garment with clamps and a stable foot base.

Handle Mock-Up

Shifter Mock-Up

Fu el nozzles a re cumbersome

devices, yet a nyone who drives a

ca r must frequ ently interact with

them. The goa l of this project

was to design a nozzle that is

ergonomica lly superior a nd more

user-friendly tha n the existing

design.

Bu ilding Mock-Ups

Interviews a nd observations proved users a re most concerned with improving both the clea nliness of the fu el ha ndle a nd the fu nction of the a utomatic fu eling system. Users who tested fou r mock-ups agreed the trigger a nd the slider were the most intu itive fu nctions to include on the new fu el nozzle.

Proposed Design

This design incorporates both the slider a nd trigger fu nctions. The trigger fu nction is familia r a nd easy to use, while the slider fu nction a llows one-handed operation a nd automatic fu eling. The updated nozzle mainta ins the interna l fu nction of the cu r-rent model while improving usability with the slider fu nction.

Under the Sea.

Dolphins ra rely use their echolocation

signa ling in a n a qua rium and need

enterta inment in between their da ily

performances. The goa l of this project

was to design a n a utomatic u nderwater

device that both stimu lates the dolphins

a nd enriches their environment.

The device satisf ies the following design requ irements:

- Detects dolphin echolocation waves as a n input- Tra nsmits the input to signa l the opening a nd closing of a va lve- Releases a ir from a reserve ta nk to expel bubbles- Independently houses electronics a nd power supply

Component Design

The outer dome of the prototype

shie lds the inner components from

dolphins a nd provides a n a esthetic for

the device. The interna l components lie

distribution. The base secu res the a ir

Materia l Selection

Materia l se lection software identif ied f iberglass for the outer dome for its du rability a nd adaptability to a marine environment. It a lso identif ied 6061 Aluminum Alloy for the base for its du rability a nd corrosion resista nce.

Cleaning with Magic.

Before bra instorming, it was neces-sa ry to a na lyze the featu res of a portable vacuum clea ner. The a es-thetics a re inspired by the classic Mickey Mouse hat in the featu re f ilm, Fa ntasia.

The goa l of this project was to design

a well-known product using the style

of a n existing bra nd. The f ina l

design incoporated the Walt Disney

bra nd into the fu nctiona lity of a

portable vacuum clea ner.

Brand persona lity a nd product posi-

tioning maps helped determine the

design direction. Although the Walt

Disney bra nd has a vast cu ltu ra l

inf lu ence, the words “simple” a nd

“magica l” helped better focus the

design a rchitectu re a nd a esthetics.

A Speedy, Stylish Breakfast.

This creative exercise a imed

to develop a product line of

cou ntertop kitchen applia nces

for Fra ncesca, a n accou nt

executive who needs a qu ick

a nd mobile breakfast every

morning.

Concept Development

Fra ncesca ’s origina l product line consisted of a coffee maker, a toaster, a single-serve blender a nd a water f ilter pitcher. Through ideation sketching a nd additiona l resea rch of the persona ’s wants a nd needs, the product line was reduced to a coffee maker a nd a toaster, two applia nces that ca n suff iciently prepa re breakfast in u nder three minutes.

Creating a Persona

Fra ncesca is a status-oriented woman who aspires to become CEO at her pla ce of em-ployment. She spends over ten hou rs at work every day, a nd travels at least once a month for business. Every night, she comes home to a loft in the hea rt of downtown. Her time is va luable, especia lly in the morn-ing. After working out for 45 minutes, Fra ncesca tries to prepa re a simple a nd mobile breakfast. Fra ncesca appreciates a nd can afford high-end, qua lity products. She lives a stressfu l, fast-paced life, so she wants the products she owns to be qu ick a nd easy to use.

From Art to Part.

The goal of this project was to design a

part to be manufactured with the plastic

injection molding process. Our f inal part

was a six-piece record player modeled

after the famous Technics turntable. From

initia l sketches, we modeled the parts and

developed a manufacturing CAM program

in Unigraphics NX 5.0.

Kristina M

arrero | 305.281.9096 | knmarrero@

There were very few diff icultites during the production process. The two molds were modeled with draft and sanded after manufacturing to ensure ease of removal of each part.

The record player has a shifting equalizer, a rotating power knob and a biaxial rotating needle. This design won f irst place among 11 teams.

Thinking for Assembly. This brie f project focused on designing a coffee table for easy manufactu ring a nd assembly. I focused on how to attach the top a nd bottom component of each table leg, as well as how those pieces cou ld be both cheaply manufactu red a nd easily as-sembled.
