Water and Environment
Building on a long-established tradition in hydraulic engineering and water planning, the Waterand Environment Area relies on qualified professionals to cover all phases –planning, design andexecution– of the water cycle in the framework of sustainability and the environment: watermanagement and control (water planning, studies on aquifers and river engineering), waterstorage (design, management and safety of dams, reservoirs and tanks), water transport, distribution and use (water supply, sewerage and sanitation and irrigation systems, catchmentsystems, channels, drainage systems and pumping stations) and water quality (treatment, purification and desalination plants). Our ongoing challenge is to optimise water resources andtheir uses by applying sustainability criteria upon water use and protecting the waterenvironment so as to settle any conflicts between the environment and economic activities.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKS:The WWTP of Ter is located in the municipalities of Cardedeu, Llinars and la Roca del Vallés. It cameinto service in 1966 with a capacity of 8 m3/s and can store up to 617,000 m3.
The ultimate objective of this design is to remodel and adapt the existing installations so that a flow of4 m3/s can be treated through a decantation and activated carbon filtering treatment (the existingtreatment); while an additional 4 m3/s is processed through a more complete clarification and sandfiltration (or ultrafiltration) process and a new activated carbon filter line so that the global capacityamounts to 8 m3/s (equal to the existing capacity) but with an upgraded treatment and animprovement of water quality. Water catchment takes place at the Pasteral reservoir and it istransported up to the WWTP through an open-channel 56-km long headrace. It takes up a 347,582 m2
area and can store up to 617,000 m3 of treated water in its tanks.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKS:Execution of a new pipeline to renew the existing installation in the most damaged areas of LosAlcázares branch. The new pipe, which increases the hydraulic capacity according to current needs(FD700) will present the same layout as the two existing pipes which will be out of service once theworks are completed and which run through urban areas. The main features of the works are:
• Installation of a K9-class ductile iron pipe with a polyethylene sleeve and a 700 m diameter. Thetotal length of the pipeline, divided into two sections, is 2,856 m. Outlets are designed for pipedischarge operations, as well as vent pipes for pipe ventilation.
• Connection works: each of the designed sections connects, both at the start and the end, with thefacilities in the existing Los Alcázares branch, which has two fibre-cement pipes with 300 and 500mm of diameter respectively. The necessary connections will be conducted in the surroundings ofthe existing wells (Rio Negro, Roda, Punta Calera and Los Barcos) using steel parts.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKS:Detailed study of the situation of water supply at each town and municipality in Catalonia, analysis ofproblems (regarding the volume and quality of water) and gathering of information aboutinfrastructures (catchments, tanks, etc.). The actions to be defined ranged from building newinfrastructure to management measures. The diagnosis took into consideration the aspects related tothe municipal management of the service, the condition of the distribution network, the managementof the different catchments and the ratio between current prices and the actual supply costs, amongothers. Insight about these features was essential to determine the need to provide the municipalitywith new water supply resources.
• Inventory of existing infrastructures.• Inventory of actions under progress or scheduled.• Data compilation.• Study of prices.• Diagnosis, proposals and management measures.• Analysis of foreseen actions.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKS:Talavera de la Reina has suffered several damages caused by the Tagus River and its right-banktributary, the Alberche River, bursting their banks and flooding. To avoid this situation, the first stepwas to conduct a hydraulic study of the river bed to determine the required protection from flood flowsin each area, established at 950 m3/s for the Alberche River and 3,000 m3/s for the Tagus River. Moreprecisely, the designed and built protections have been the following:
• Flood embankment to face floods originating from the Alberche river.• Protection in urban sections by executing double walls.• Protection downstream form Talavera de la Reina through concrete screen walls.• Protection to the left river bank by executing semipermeable quarry-run dykes.
Landscape and structural restoration project:
• Restoration of Puente Viejo bridge for pedestrian use.• Walkways to both margins and conditioning of underpass.• Configuration of sports and leisure area upstream of Puente Nuevo.• Design of a cantilevered square over the river between Puente Viejo and Puente Metálico.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKS:The designs of "Airport of Madrid/Barajas. 15L/33R Runway andassociated taxiways" and "18L/36R Runway and associatedtaxiways" comprise the Jarama River course diversion works andthe channelling of water streams Tía Martina, La Plata, Valdebebas,Las Zorreras and La Vega.
The diversion of the Jarama River, considering a design flow rate ofQ500=900 m3/s established by the Jarama River Basin Authorityconsisted of a new low water channel that starts 300 m upstreamfrom the Berrocales dam and extends for 1,695 m. So as to imitatethe natural river course, the channelling has been designed using atrapezoidal 20-m wide section at its lowest base, 2H/1V rockfillembankments and 1.50 m of height.
For the channelling of streams, design flow rates for Q500 were: TíaMartina-La Plata-Valdebebas 180 m3/s, Las Zorreras 60 m3/s, LaVega 88 m3/s. All channellings comprise a channel and a pondupstream from the runways, a two-cell box under the runways ofapproximately 550 m of length, each cell with dimensions of 5.00 mx 3.70 m unless that of Tía Martina - La Plata - Valdebebas that is6.00 m x 4.70 m, and downstream from the runways up to theirdischarge into the Jarama River, the channel is protected by abreakwater.
