For the first time in UBEL the “Life Time Achievement Award” has been

instituted. This year the award is given to Mr. Bidyut Chakrabarty, Sr. Vice

President-Operations in recognition of his long and meritorious service in UBEL.

He has put in a spell of 39 long years and is still NOT OUT. Having joined in

1972 as Jr. Engineer he rose through ranks and has acted as a TROUBLE-

SHOOTER for various projects in problem. His deep knowledge of erection

along with exemplary executive qualities brought him the achievements. UBEL

feels proud that even at the age of 61, he is full of energy and working

to fulfill the commitments in respect of the project of Adani's at

Tiroda (Erection & Associated Works of Boiler & Auxiliaries &

TG Auxiliaries of Unit No.2, 4 & 5 of 3300 MW (5x660 MW).

We expressed our gratitude by giving this Award to

Mr. Bidyut Chakrabarty.

Excerpts of an interview with

Mr. B Chakrabory

In December 1971 I joined Western India Erectors as a

temporary staff at Koradi Thermal Power station 4x120

MW ESP & Turbine, Unit # 5 - 1 x 200 MW Turbine & Aux. In

the year 1978 I was posted as Site Incharge at Parli 1 x 210

MW Turbine, Aux & TG Piping. 1981 was important year

for me as I was posted as Independent site In-charge at

Titagarh 4 x 60 MW Turbine, Aux, TG piping, Busduct.

My first overseas assignment came in 1983 when I was

deputed to Japan for Training in 300 MW Turbine

assembly. Next I was posted at Al Zour Kuwait as In-charge

of 8 x 300 MW Turbine assembly & erection.

In 1987 I was posted at Kolaghat as Project Manager for

2 x 210 MW Boiler erection.

1992 was the year I was at Anpara as Sr. Project Manager

for 2 x 500 MW Super Thermal Power Project - Boiler,

Bunker, Turbine, Electrical & Instrumentation of Boiler &

Turbine.

My proud moment was when I received the Gold Medal &

Certificate for best Performance in 1993 & 1994. And in

1995 I received the Gold Medal for Best Regional Office

while posted as Dy GM at Kolkata Regional Office and I was

awarded with gold medal for Best Regional Office

Functioning in 1995. At Kolkata we executed some very

prestigious assignments for clients such as IOC Barauni,

Numaligarh Refinery, Mejia Thermal Power station, ETP

project at IOC Haldia, MHI – PTA plant at Haldia. Burla

Hydel Project, Teesta Hydel Project, EPC project at Neyveli

Lignite Corporation for Ansaldo, Boiler / ESP / Critical

piping job at NTPC Vindhyachal for BHEL.

In 2003 I returned to Pune as Sr.VP. In the last few years the

major projects we handled are ETA Dubai, Alstom Sudan,

Burnpur, Usha Martin, Tirora etc.

Tell us a little about your tenure with UBEL....

Life Time Achievement Award

What is your opinion about the UBEL work culture ?

Please share with us your success mantra...

What were your guiding strategies and policies ?

More about yourself.....

The “Family environment” and “Team based” work

culture prevalent in our company is the main reason why I

never thought of leaving this organization. In today’s

professional environment it is heartening to see the new

generation making efforts to retain the earlier work

culture.

There is no limit to success. Whether I am successful or not

will be judged by others. Still I think there is much more to

achieve. Old fashioned virtues like hard work, honesty,

integrity, reliability, getting the job done on time and

within budget are my success mantra.

I believe it is important to arrange all inputs to ensure best

productivity which in turn reduces the cost and improves

profitability. Then prepare a detailed work plan with

productivity and budgets. Then most importantly monitor

these closely to ensure success.

I was born in Bangladesh and my father was a doctor. In

1950 our family came to India as refugees from

Bangladesh. From 1955 to 1961 we lived in Burma.

We returned to India in 1962. This movement from place to

place taught me the very important lesson in life, to be

open to all challenges that life throws at you and overcome

them with dignity. After schooling I did Diploma in

Mechanical Engineering from Ramakrishna Mission

Polytechnic

I was married in 1976 and today have two happily married

daughters.

To stay fit I regularly play volley ball, badminton, chess,

carom. I spend my leisure time watching news channels.

The last quarter of the financial year in any organization is always full of activities and

excitement towards achieving the Organizational as well as personal goals. While our senior

executives are pursuing targets at macro level, our supporting staff gears itself to deliver at

micro level. The moral of the story is to give full attention to the job on hand, as only then can

we march to progress and ultimately achieve our goal. As always, the turn of the year is the

time for introspection as well as looking forward. We have gained invaluable insights from the

projects we have executed – that are providing the strong base from upon which we shall continue to build. I look forward to the

future as we work to fulfill the mission of UBEL.

Every day we get involved in achieving our professional goals and to perform better and better to get the reward and recognition

from the management. After all, without work, we would not have money to provide the needs of ourselves as well as our family

members. The purpose of earning money is essentially the individual’s desire to provide security and comfort to his/her near and

dear ones. Every parent has dreams for his/her offspring and wishes to provide all that they themselves had yearned for and had

been met with or not met with for lack of affordability or some other reason. Almost always, a person toils hard only to ensure

that the needs of the family are met. But at what cost?

This issue of FACEBOOK addresses “Balancing Work Life”. It's been said that "All

work no play makes Jack a dull boy,". Finding a healthy balance between your work

and personal life is something nearly everyone struggles with. It's not always easy,

but it's important to make time for both since, too much of either can be

detrimental. We all agree that work is important, but finding time for yourself is just

as important. It's not easy to find time for both but it should be a priority.

Organizations have also recognized the importance of balance of work life and are

providing many benefits and recreational activities. Our Management also took a

step further to restore the energy and passion of the employees by organizing a

family day out at Pune as well as at our Delhi office. Exciting and thrilling Sports

activities were organized throughout the year to keep us mentally and physically fit

to overcome the pressure of work at office. Everyone enjoyed the Sports Hungama

at UBEL.

We solicit your suggestions and responses at [email protected]

IT is managing technology and spans a wide variety of areas that include, but are not limited to, processes,

computer software, information systems, computer hardware, programming languages, and data constructs. In

short, anything that renders data, information or perceived knowledge in any visual format whatsoever, via any multimedia distribution mechanism, is considered part of the domain space known as Information Technology (IT).

IT professionals perform a variety of functions (IT Disciplines/Competencies) that range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases. Other tasks of IT professionals may include data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, as well as management and administration of entire systems.

IT Department @ UB Engineering

The IT department at UB Engineering takes care of a wide variety of hardware as well as software technologies. The technologies cover the following major functions of Security, Monitoring, Protection, Prevention and Management of all the IT assets of the company.

The sentry at the gate of UB Engineering is the Juniper Firewall. This firewall takes care of the Intrusion Detection and Prevention System which is responsible for preventing unauthorized access to the UBEL network and prevents leakage of valuable data from the network. This system also provides seamless connectivity between the Head Office, Delhi office, EPC office and UB Ostan office. All the internet access for these offices is provided from this centralized location and is controlled from this firewall.

Next in line for security is the Websense Web Security which takes care of monitoring and preventing unproductive access to the internet. This helps in saving valuable internet bandwidth. Another feature of this prevention method is that infections and malicious attacks can be reduced to large extent.

For the end user and server level virus protection we have the Kaspersky Anti Virus solution which takes care of the virus attacks on these machines.

For the last two years we haven’t had any virus outbreaks in the enterprise network.

For prevention and monitoring we have NAGIOS monitoring system which continuously monitors all the servers and their respective services for any disruption. This has helped us achieve 99.9% uptime.

The most important and critical part of the IT is backups. To take care of the same we have two solutions in place. First we have VeritasNetbackup which is the industry leader for backup solution. This software takes care of the backups for the servers. Secondly we have Bacula backup system which takes backups of the

desktops.

These are the few of the systems which we have mentioned in this issue. Please watch out for this space in the next issue for further details of all the systems.

The moment you are in TENSION

You will lose your ATTENTION

Then you are in total CONFUSION

and you'll feel IRRITATION

This may spoil your personal RELATIONS

Ultimately, you won't get COOPERATION

And get things into COMPLICATION

Then you may raise CAUTION

And you have to take MEDICATION

Why not try understanding the SITUATION

And try to think about the SOLUTION

Many problems will be solved by DISCUSSION

Which will work out better in your PROFESSION

Don't think this is a free SUGGESTION

It is only for your PREVENTION

If you understand my INTENTION

You'll never come again into TENSION!!!!!!

A Low Cost Continuous Improvement Approach

KAIZEN

9

12

Foreword|Editorial Technology New Entrants People Focus|Project Focus|New Orders| |Events| |

This article is in continuation to the ARTICLE ON KAIZEN published in the last quarter.

We will now take up the GEMBA KAIZEN the real place of action. In our case GEMBA is Project site and office management which has to have continuous improvement without any investment.

GEMBA Real place of action (sites and office) - these are the places where value added activities that satisfy the customer and give profits/loss to the company. GEMBA is place where the product and services are formed. Managers normally place more importance on other sectors than the GEMBA.

The three main activities directly related to earning profits are Tendering, Procurement and Execution.

GEMBA and Management

Maintaining GEMBA at the top management structure requires committed employees who should be inspired to fullfill their roles, to feel proud of their jobs and to appreciate the contribution they make to the company and society. Instituting a sense of mission and pride is an integral part of management responsibility for GEMBA.

Roles of GEMBA and Management

GEMBA to provide the product and service that satisfies the customer. Management to set strategy and deploy policies to achieve GEMBA goals.

Thrust for improvement both.

BOTTOM UP

AND

TOP DOWN

Mangers always tell GEMBA what to do. They should listen to and learn from employees in GEMBA in order to provide appropriate help. GEMBA becomes the source of achieving commonsense, low cost improvements. Respective ROLES OF MANAGEMENT AND GEMBA should not be confused.

Conditions for successful implementation of GEMBA centred approach

GEMBA management must keep accountability for achieving QCD. Q = quality, C = cost, D = delivery.

GEMBA must be allowed enough elbow room for Kaizen (continuous improvement).

Management should provide the target for GEMBA to achieve but should be accountable for the outcome and should assist GEMBA in achieving the target.

In the next series we will explain Benefits of GEMBA CENTERED APPROCH………………………..

T C Ghera, Technical Advisor, Delhi

Great vision followed by brilliant execution by a great team ... is the simple, one line success mantra in business. One may say that luck plays a vital role in determining success, one may argue that strong leadership should be the key mantra but again it's the three basic ingredients in the above one liner that define what strong leadership is all about .

Vision: Formulating a vision statement is an exercise that large corporate can afford to undertake. I strongly believe that it's an important early mile stone in an entrepreneur's journey. The need to have the vision statement is an obvious one .

Team: An average leader has a myopic view of the skills needed to execute the business plans, rarely looking beyond the hard skill required for the tasks to be undertaken. A great leader looks beyond the immediate skill sets required. He is looking for tomorrow's leader, today. A great leader also knows that there may be many people who are excellent for technical task, but have limited managerial potential. Those too, must be accommodated within a flexible organization structure.

A word on management team, with regards to team dynamics. Instead of a leader “hearing out” his team's views and then taking a decision, a better way would be to allow for the team’s group dynamism to manifest itself. This requires a leader to “Listen” to his team members allowing for a consensus building process to take place.

Needless to say, he will always have the final say, but that say must be seen as resulting from the consensus building exercise. It needs a certain amount of self confidence, patience and focus.

Execution: Execution is not a one time push towards achieving goal- it's a way of life. The best way to establish a culture of execution is for you to set an example of meeting goals, responding to customers and measuring employee progress.

Reward Achievers: Achievers become even more motivated about doing their jobs, and the underachievers know the company takes

execution seriously.

Family has always formed the very crux in every individual's life. In today's hectic times, the interaction level among family members is minimal. There is nothing quite like a family get together to bring everyone closer together. It's all about enjoying every moment of being together. It is an opportunity for family members to come together and reconnect. Having put in hectic efforts and a lot of hard work, we certainly need a little change. To get the families together, we planned a family get together on 26th Feb. 2011 at Chokhi Dhani, Wagholi.

Chokhi Dhani has several attractions such as Rajasthani Dance Show, Folk Dances, Magic Show, Puppet show, Nut (Rassi Pe Chalewala), Mini Train, Columbus, Tatto, Mehandiwali, pot maker, bangle maker, etc, Fortune Teller, and other Games counter like balloon shooting, ball game, etc.

We gathered at 6.30 pm at Ganga Retreat Club, which is adjacent to Chokhi Dhani. The function started with lighting the auspicious lamp at the hands of Mr.JK Sardana, Managing Director, Mr. Sunil Nayyar, Chief Operating officer and Mr. GM Bapat, Vice President-HR with Ganesh Vandana.

We had many entertainment programs which included songs by our employees, professional artistes performing popular songs and dances.

One highlight of the program was the Prizes and Awards Distribution ceremony.

Prizes were given to the winners of the Sports Hungama. Drawing and Essay competitions of the children of our employees were held in office and the prize were given to the winners at the family function.

Have you thought of the diverse range of the benefits of playing sports? Have you realized the importance of making sports a part of your daily activities?

Playing sports is one of our favorite activities. Apart from being a fun, sports offer several health benefits. So they say "Sports keep you physically healthy". But, do you know why? Sports can improve the 5 components of fitness namely: Strength, Speed, Skill, Stamina, and Suppleness. Sports brings freshness and joy to our otherwise busy lives. It helps to balance the pressures of work life. It's “not about winning or losing, but how you played the game", and “The most important thing... is not winning but participating".

A sports committee was formed headed by Ms. N Supriya for conducting various sports activities within the organization like Badminton, Carrom, Chess, Table Tennis during the year. We were surprised and overjoyed by the responses we received from employees. It was wonderful to see our colleagues bring out the sportsman spirit in them. The matches were played with great enthusiasm, with the audience participating by cheering.

Prize distribution ceremony was conducted on the occasion of Family Get-Together of the employees of UBEL which was held on 26th February 2011. Three prizes were declared for each sports in three categories, Winner, Second and Runner-up with cash prize. Is Your Life in Balance? How much is work invading your personal life, and how much of your personal life is affected by the stress of trying to balance all the many responsibilities in your life?

You get so involved with the everyday demands of achieving your professional goals that you let your personal goals and relationships suffer. It's easy to say that career must take priority. After all, without work you wouldn't have the money to provide for yourself and your family - and these are the ultimate personal goals. So you justify the added hours spent at the office by saying it's for the good of the family. But at what cost? Anyone who's fallen victim to this knows the answer. You miss a lot!

I'm not suggesting you deny or suppress your emotions, but just discover for yourself what it takes for you to handle your emotions and stay balanced.

Responsibility of the employer

I am always inspired when I read about workplaces that recognize that their employees are real people with real needs - that they are "humans" not just "human resources." The employees always try to identify and select an employer which will be friendly to their family commitments and support their work life balance priorities.

An employee is required to fulfill the duel responsibility of managing his home and work simultaneously. There is a need for him/her to maintain a balance between these two roles. If he/she gets over involved with his/her work, it can lead to a break up of home and family life, leading to mental stress which later starts affecting his work life.

Organizations have begun to realize how important the work-life balance is to the productivity and creativity of their employees. Employers can offer a range of different programs and initiatives, such as flexible working arrangements in the form of part time, casual and telecommuting work. More

proactive employers can prov ide compul sory leave, strict maximum hours and foster an e n v i r o n m e n t t h a t encourages employees not to continue working after hours.

Today there are many young women who do not want to just stay at home and do house work, but want to have their careers. In fact, women may lose their self-esteem and identities when they stay at home.

A number of benefits and services would create greater bonding of the employee and his family with the organization, like coping with balancing work and family life.

How you can cope up with balancing work and family life..

By following these simple steps you will soon begin to realize that balancing work and family life is indeed possible through effective time management.

What is Effective time Management?Identify time wastersDo not Mix Work and Personal LifeSpend weekends for private lifeDo not over WorkDelegate effectivelySet time limit for tasksMaintain a Diary or Organizer

Effective time management is setting up goals and the time frame for achieving each goal and stick to the plan. Once you set up the goals and time lines and following them up strictly and draw boundaries accordingly you will be easily able to balance both work and life.

You must learn to balance your personal responsibilities, relationships and goals with your professional ones. They must all live in harmony together. Otherwise, you end up resentful. You grow distant from the people you love, feel overwhelmed by the pressure to keep up the pace, and lose sense of what is

truly important.

Achievement and Enjoyment are the front

and back of the coin of value in life. You can't have one without the other, no more than you can have a coin with only one side. Trying to live a one sided life is why so many "Successful" people are not happy, or not nearly as happy as they should be. You cannot get the full value from life without BOTH Achievement and Enjoyment. Simple concepts. And once you focus on them as key components of your day, they are not that hard to implement. So, make it happen, for yourself, your family and all the important individuals you care about…every day for the rest of your life… Achieve and Enjoy.

We need to maintain a proper balance in our life by allocating the time we have. There are occasions where saying no is the best time management practice there is."

"Life's demands may not slow up any time soon, and learning life balance is an ongoing art. If you think one day you will get it all done, and then you can relax, you are bound to be disappointed."

You wouldn't dream of missing a meeting with a client so treat your meetings with your family and friends the exact same way. And while you're at it, schedule a meeting with yourself! If you're busy with work responsibilities, make an appointment to take yourself out to lunch or go for a walk. Treat the appointment like any other. It's a commitment that is not to be missed.

Work life balance cannot be successful without effective priority setting. Learn ways to set priorities on the things that matter most and to say "no" to the things that matter least.
