Attendance CountsThis course explores engineering as a career. This is best learned by

Conscientious reading of the Text Book Listening Carefully to the Instructor during class Asking Relevant Questions

Attendance Comprises 20% of the Course Grade; a breakdown The first two meetings are not counted toward the attendance score GUEST SPEAKER meetings count DOUBLE

o Likely to have 10-12 Guest Speakers; See Schedule MidTerm Exam meeting counts by 4X

BOXING IT

Punctuality is important Roll taken at the Beginning of Class

o Roll Order May be Randomizedo Those not present at roll call will receive Half Credit if they verify their LATE

Attendance by the End of the Class PeriodAbsences are generally NOT excused

Instructor has sole discretion in this areao Usually “Third Party” Verification Required; e.g., a note from a physician

Withdrawal From CourseAfter the Last day to Add or Drop NGR (No Grade of Record) date any student wishing to withdraw from the course receiving a “W” on his/her grade-transcript MUST, to completely avoid an “F” grade, initiate the withdrawal through the Admissions & Records process. In other words, the STUDENT must drop the course either using CLASS-Web, or in-person in the Community Student Services Center (Bldg-700).

Do NOT ASSUME that the instructor will drop any student from the course

The instructor MAY drop students from the course at the “Last day to drop with a ‘W’ (Withdraw) as indicated in the “Academic Calendar” published in the Chabot College class schedule. Any student who fails to take the course seriously earns a W. Evidence of a lack of commitment to the course includes any of these W-earning actions:

Not ATTENDING class for any 3 consecutive weeks Not turning in HOMEWORK for 3 weeks prior to the W-Date Not taking the MIDTERM EXAM

WARNING: After the “W date” the Instructor is Obligated by College Policy to give all enrolled students Letter Grades. ONLY Chabot COUNSELING can approve “Late W’s”.

Homework Assignment GradingNEATNESS COUNTS

Most University Engineering Professors Expect a Polished Homework Presentation Almost all work done in Industry is accomplished with Computer Applications (e.g.,

MicroSoft® Office, or similar, Applications)Homework assignments

Homework exercises will be assigned as noted on the course scheduleHomework Presentation:

Submit all homework on 8.5” x 11” paper If more than one sheet, staple in the upper left corner. Type all assignments.

o Graphics and/or Calculations carefully done in pencil may be acceptable as announced by the instructor

For all hand Calculations, Identify your answer by

© Bruce Mayer, PE • Chabot College • document.docx • Page 3

For any computer calculation, identify your answer by BOLDING IT Present all work professionally: organized, logical, neat, legible, complete On the top of the homework assignment the following MUST appear on the top sheet:

o Your Nameo The Course ID = ENGR10o The Date Upon Which you Performed the worko Assignment No. ______

HOMEWORK GRADING: 3-Point Scale with breakdown: 3 points → homework submitted in a professional manner 2 points → average homework presentation 1 point → homework submitted in a unprofessional manner 0 points → homework not turned in

HOMEWORK DUE Date & Time HomeWork sets are due in the instructor’s office at the end of the day noted on the

course schedule (Officially LATE at 8am the NEXT College WorkDay) Late Homework

o May be Turned in ONE (1) class-meeting late with a 15% penalty (0.85 multiplier)

Homework will NOT be accepted after the one-meeting late period The instructor may, solely at his discretion, accept extra-late

homework in extenuating circumstances.o Extra-Late HomeWork may be subject to an Extra-Steep

Penalty based sole on the instructor’s discretion Partial Submissions NOT accepted

o Only ONE submission per Homework/Lab Assignment If more than one submission, then ONLY the FIRST Submission will be

Graded

HomeWork assignments taken from the TEXT BOOK are found at the END Of The Chapter, under the chapter-section titled “Exercises and Activities”.

Several Homework assignments are written by instructor. These may be DownLoaded from the course WebPage if not handed-out in class.

ExamsNote that since students earn 20% for attendance then the exams are DESIGNED to TEST what the students DO during class time. What a GOOD student does is LISTEN-CAREFULLY to the speaker. A student who listens carefully, and studies the presentations and guest-biographies posted to the course webpage usually scores at least a "B" on the Exams.

Exams will primarily consist of a combination of: o True/False Questionso Multiple Choice Questionso Short-Answer Questionso Reading Charts and/or Graphso Solving problems using a calculator

© Bruce Mayer, PE • Chabot College • document.docx • Page 4

A set of EXAMPLE Questions taken from previous MidTerm and Final Exams is Posted to the Course WebPage

o Students are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to review the examples prior to the MidTerm Exam to become familiar with the general-content and format of the Exams.

Subject matter covered in the reading assignments may be included in exams although not specifically covered during lecture

All exams are CLOSED-BOOK Make-up exams will NOT be given except in very rare circumstances and only at the

discretion of the instructor. Please do NOT miss ANY of the Exams. o MakeUp exams are only offered in those cases where the student can provide 3 rd

party justification (e.g., a note from a medical doctor) for the absence.o Any MakeUp exam must be taken the NEXT day, at a time & location determined

by the instructor.o All MakeUp exams are subject to a 15% score-penalty.

MakeUp exam takers have extra study time, and that is NOT FAIR to those students who make the (sometimes extraordinary) effort to come to the exam on-time.

GUEST SPEAKER Courtesy & ConsiderationEngineering-10 guest speakers give freely of their time to help Chabot students better understand the nature of the engineering profession. Speakers typically spend several hours preparing for the lecture, and then take several more hours out of their busy professional day to make the trip to Chabot. Our guests receive NO $-Compensation for their efforts. The very least that a courteous and considerate adult would do in these circumstances to show appreciation for the effort expended by our guests:

Arrive at the classroom ON-TIME Pay close attention to the speaker’s remarks

o Closed-Eyes or Head-Down behavior shows ZERO GRATITUDE for the SACRIFICES that the speaker has made to HELP US

Hold NO side-conversations or engage in any other distracting behavior while the speaker addresses the class

THANK the speaker with an enthusiastic round of applause at the conclusion of his/her remarks

Any student who can NOT follow these simple human-courtesy guidelines is asked to NOT attend guest lectures.

Any student who engages in DIScourteous behavior towards the ENGR10 Guest earns a −4 (MINUS 4) attendance score penalty for that class-day

ClassRoom CourtesyAs a courtesy to other students and the instructor in any classroom:1. When coming-late or leaving-early, PLEASE do NOT walk in FRONT of the instructor while

he/she is speaking Please take a seat as UNOBSTRUSIVELY as possible.

© Bruce Mayer, PE • Chabot College • document.docx • Page 5

o The goal for coming-late or leaving-early students is that NO ONE notices the entrance or exit.

2. PLEASE do NOT activate any PRINTERS (or other noise-making objects) during lectures or discussions

3. PLEASE do NOT Type/KeyBoard/Text during lectures or discussions4. PLEASE do NOT hold side-conversations during lectures or discussions5. PLEASE set all CELL PHONES to VIBRATE before entering the classroom6. PLEASE do NOT bring LIQUIDS into Computer Labs7. PLEASE DO ask QUESTIONS about the course content

Student Conduct - GeneralEveryone in this class, including the instructor, is a mature adult, so Courteous and Respectful behavior is expected at all times.

Please & ThankYou go a long way to make a pleasant atmosphere. Swearing is not appropriate for the classroom.
