January 1, 2013 To Whom It May Concern: Subject: United Airlines Back-To-Birth Records for Life-Limited Engine Parts United Airlines back-to-birth (BTB) records are in two parts: 1. BTB Report. This is an automated report containing the time and cycle accumulation history for each life-limited part, from current back to zero time. 2. Pro-Rate Report. This is an automated report containing the accumulation of hours and

cycles for each power rating the life-limited part was operated at. United Airlines automated the reports in July of 2003. The reports are currently generated using United Airlines Engine Parts Monitoring System (EPM) which is used to record the initial accumulations of parts entered into the system (zero for new parts), and track the accumulations at the part level; meaning, as the part is installed and removed from one engine onto another, the accumulations for that part are maintained and remain with the part. After being added into EPM and being installed on an engine, EPM updates each part’s accumulations record as the part accumulates time and cycles from operation. Because the data in the Back-To-Birth Detail History Report is obtained directly from the same source (EPM) used in the supporting documentation provided prior to July 2003, no other supporting documentation is required (i.e. separate documentation for each removal and installation event). The need for this support documentation is obsolete. In addition, a best effort will be made to include a copy of an acceptable record (such as a serviceable tag) with each BTB records package documenting the part as new with zero time. In cases where BTB does not go back to zero in United Airlines system, a best effort will be made to bridge any gaps with acceptable documentation. Acceptable documentation includes, but is not limited to, copies of any 3rd

party records. These additional records, as available, will be included with the United Airlines BTB records package.
