DEAR COLLEAGUESBy Nicolette PeyreIASK – President

I am writing this a few days after our Board Meeting in Paris. All the members of the Board traveled at own their expense to Paris, or more exactly to Sylviane Vrillonneau’s home in Perthes-en-Gâtinais: from the States (Kathie Guhl), Brazil (Verônica Affonso), Denmark (Annemarie Goldsmidt and Brigit Nielsen), Sweden (Birgitta Birath), Italy (Diego Vellam) and myself from Belgium. I feel that this shows true dedication to IASK and, sure enough, we made very good progress during these two days. This will enable us to carry forward the tasks we’ve set ourselves in keeping with the aims and goals of our Association. The board reflects the world dimension of IASK. We are experiencing ourselves first hand how enriching this international cross-pollinating can be. In order to better respond to the member's wishes, we set some time aside in Copenhagen last year to have an exchange of views during the IASK Forum. We published a summary of the members’ responses in our last Newsletter (available on the website: www.iask.org). One of the participants summed up very aptly what we think IASK is about. He said: ‘Free participation of all self-defined "Kinesiologists" into IASK.

Some News About The IASK Website WWW.IASK.ORG

Our IASK website is still growing and changing. We are developing a new layout which makes downloads go much faster and have created some new buttons for the site. Until now the website has been in five languages: ENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMAN, PORTUGUESE AND DANISH. We are now adding SWEDISH, SPANISH AND ITALIAN, so that makes the site available in eight language options!!! Are you interested in helping with our translations? If so, please contact one of the board members with your offer to help.We have also created several new buttons for the site. In the new area called “RESEARCH”, you will find the latest information about research in Specialized Kinesiology. Sharing is a key word for IASK and we want to share information about research as well. Please help us by sending research information to one of the board members. All the Newsletters can be found when you press the new button “NEWSLETTERS”. The latest Newsletter will be put on the website 3 months after you have received it by mail/snail mail. Another new button is called “COUNTRY INFORMATION”. Here you will find general information about Modalities, Training, and Standards & Laws regarding CAM from each country. Again we invite you to send in information from your country. We still look forward to receiving your directory form. Just download it from the website, fill it out and send it back. You will be on the website as long as you are an IASK-member. Remember - a website is only exciting if it is updated regularly. Please send us articles, information, your directory forms and any country information you would like to share. We look forward to hearing from you.

Provide references, resources, and information about Associations, Organizations, and Governments. Publish what kinds of standards and guidelines have been established as reference, not as requirement enforced or administered by IASK.’

I liked the ‘self-defined’ because we (members of the board of IASK) don’t want to be the ones to decide who is and who is not a kinesiologist. I do believe though, that we need to put together all our definitions of what we do and ‘what’ we are in order to better understand our identity as kinesiologists and use better concepts to explain that to the outside world. Our next IASK Forum could focus on our identity as kinesiologists. As far as the providing of references and the publishing of standards are concerned, we are making some progress.

If you want to participate and post your national standards do not hesitate to send us a file, word or pdf (preferably for easier downloading). We also welcome information about new developments in your countries, on-going research and completed research projects. You can send it in your mother tongue if you do not have a translation into English yet. A few key words in English might help but do not let that language ‘barrier’ deter you.

We are starting a reader’s corner. If you want to share something, write us a note at [email protected]. We are preparing the 2006 Annual General Meeting, which will take place under the auspices of the IKC Conference in Kirchzarten - Germany, on September 14th 2006. It will be good to see you there and to go on networking and planning our next moves.

We have also chosen to hold our next Conference in France, very close to Paris from May 25th to May 28th

2007. There is an urban train –‘metro’ as they say there or ‘tube’ as some of you say. We are getting ready to offer you, dear IASK members, a variety of workshops on ethics and code of conduct, on guidelines for research (and how to cooperate with scientists in public funded research projects on alternative health care methods) or on teaching techniques. The format of this conference will also provide time for sharing, balances and fun, of course. So put the dates down in your agenda and keep some time free before and after for those workshops and for a visit of Paris. We’ll endeavour to help you enjoy your stay!

We ask you to send us information about new developments in your countries, on-going research and completed research projects. We also would like to start a reader’s corner. If you want to share something, write us a note at [email protected].

We are very much looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible on September 14th 2006 in Kirchzarten, Germany.

Warm regards,Nicolette Peyre, President

Standards and Accreditation

ENKA ADOPTS STANDARDS AND ACCREDITATIONS

The Energy Kinesiology Association, based in the US, has voted to add Standards and Accreditations to their by-laws, thereby creating a certification process for their members. The vote was a landslide, with over 90% of the ballots cast as “Yes” to the proposal.

The certifications that were voted in are based on the Australian model, and allow for three levels.

CERTIFIED ENERGY KINESIOLOGIST LEVEL 1: requires a minimum of 258 hours of training, including Kinesiology classes, anatomy and physiology, and basic ethics.

CERTIFIED ENERGY KINESIOLOGIST LEVEL 2: requires 500 hours, which include those already earned in Level 1, plus additional hours of Kinesiology classes, other relevant training such as nutrition, some business training and a second ethics course.

CERTIFIED ENERGY KINESIOLOGIST LEVEL 3: requires a total of 1,000 hours of Kinesiology training (including those already used for Levels 1 and 2), plus extra hours of relevant training (including those in Levels 1 and 2) and an advanced ethics course.

Each level will also require a First Aid certificate from a licensed agency, such as the Fire Department in a local area, or the Red Cross.

The EnKA is very happy with this new certificate, which will allow members to show proper documentation so they can work in hospitals and related health agencies. A further benefit is the professionalism that such standards and accreditations will bring.

Because the EnKA certificate is so closely based on the Australian model, the two countries will be able to accredit courses written in the other country. That means that a course accredited in Sydney will be automatically accepted in New York, so a student can move freely within the two countries to take classes, confident that the hours will count in both places. It’s truly a way to bring the two countries closer together, and for the profession of Kinesiology to become more standardized.

If any country would like to use the EnKA model for standards and accreditations in their own associations, the EnKA would be very happy to give you their procedures free of charge. In that way, even more countries could share in the camaraderie and bonds being forged by having similar requirements and standards. Please contact Kathie Guhl at [email protected] for more information about acquiring the Standards and Accreditations procedures for your association.

IASK A.G.M. - COPENHAGEN

IMPORTANT :

We apologize for an omission that was made in the minutes from the 2005 Annual General Meeting minutes. They should have included the following:

MEMBERSHIP:

Dues: the Board had suggested that they remain at their present level of 40 euros for members and 200 euros for Associate members. Annemarie Goldscmidt

The Board had proposed to add a new category of membership for students, retired kinesiologists and supporting members, called ‘supporting member’. The Board suggested the dues for this category to be half the regular membership dues. This category would have no voting rights and cannot be posted on the website

Both proposals were motioned by Birgit Nielsen and seconded by Annemarie Goldschmidt and were passed unanimously.’

Respectfully submitted,Kathie Guhl, Secretary

COMMUNION OR SEPARATION? THE THERAPEUTIC IMPLICATIONS OF THE RELATIONSHIP

INDIVIDUAL / ENVIRONMENT IN THE LIGHT OF THE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCES SUPPLIED BY QUANTUM PHYSICS.

(Dr. Diego Vellam - Academy of Kinesiology, Italy - www.accademiadikinesiologia.it)

One of the typical characteristics of the neurologically developed beings seems to be the perception of their own identity: the ability to perceive itself in its own individuality, separated from all the rest.Such a characteristic has been well known for years also through various studies of Ethology, which show how animals rather evolved like fish, result unable to recognize themselves when reflected in a mirror. To such a recognition of the self and of its own boundaries result associated specific mechanisms of survival, of great importance in any person. The 'safety zone' and the 'danger zone' in relation to oneself are constantly pondered over the personal perception of one's own individuality.A personal program of environmental management that results not perfectly efficient can significantly reduce the extension of the 'safety zone', until it coincides with the physical border of one's own body, and sometimes even less. This can make the person feel like in a sort of constant 'siege', with direct consequences on the reactions of his/her survival system, that hence causes deterioration in his/her environmental management ability further exacerbating the initial condition. It has been known since a long time that one of the most important functional systems in the human being is constituted by the Immune System. The purpose of the latter is of managing, up to the cellular level, the difference between what constitutes 'self' and what constitutes 'not self.' In every moment of our life it constantly monitors the enormous number of components that constitutes us, establishing a discriminating line and carrying out the necessary protections from what is identified as 'not self.'The actions that make reference to the Immune System are exceptionally subtle and complex. For instance when the digestive process is considered, much reference is often made to processes that are relatively well known, like the transformation of carbohydrates or of lipids, forgetting that a role much

more important in the digestive process is played by the transformation of the 'not self' into 'self'. This means that the DNA contained in the chicken eaten at lunch results different from the DNA of the person that has eaten it, but through his/her process of digestion those constituents are turned into cells that share all with the person the same DNA and the information within it: a process so extraordinarily complex and delicate is performed by the body in such a natural way that it results absolutely imperceptible. If the Immune System therefore manages the relationship between 'self' and 'not self' (the two fundamental environments of reference), it results interesting to notice that the number of autoimmune diseases, that originate from dysfunctions in the personal program of environmental management, has been increasing drastically in the last few years. In a milder but more extensive way, this manifests also in the increased number of people that suffer from allergies and intolerances. It happens more and more often to find in the media worried forecasts about the different types of pollen that (according to the season) are spread by the plants over the population, with negative consequences for millions of people that are allergic to them. It seems a bulletin of war, and we are speaking instead of plants, present in the environment for many thousand years without causing such negative consequences on the beings nearby. Therefore judging from evidence the number of individuals that have problems with their own personal program of environmental management has been steadily increasing in the last years. As mentioned above, this exacerbates as a consequence the reactions put into effect by their survival system. The psychological and emotional aspects do not remain immune from this. The current social and professional demands often force individuals to keep contact with other people that invade their own 'safety zone', and this is often maintained and

7

repeated on a daily basis, activating the reactions of the survival system of the person, further exacerbating any limit that may be present in his/her personal program of environmental management. All these considerations could bring us to think that the solution consists in sheltering more and more inside the 'safety zone', cuddling our own individuality, separated from the dangerous external world. And this, in many ways, is what can be recognized with more and more evidence in the different diseases treated in clinics.Yet it has been known for a century to contemporary science that this does not have any actual correspondence with the physical reality. In fact one of the most remarkable consequences brought to our understanding of reality by Quantum Mechanics (a branch of Physics) is that it results impossible to separate the observer from what is observed.Such a statement may perhaps appear of little relevance, but for more than thirty years the best minds in Physics have valiantly fought before finally accepting that true reality comprises such different characteristics from the usual expectations. In particular, it results completely impossible to separate, even if purely conceptually, a system from another with which it interacts. The environment and the individual, from the point of view of the physical reality that the contemporary science has now identified, are only one single thing, in consideration of their interaction. The scientific contributions of Quantum Mechanics, after one century from its introduction, still shake the pillars of our usual conception of reality, and they repeat to us that everything is one: the biologist and the microbe observed through the microscope, the individual and his fellows, the same Earth and all that lives in it.Only few experts have familiarity with the wave equations of Schroedinger that describe in mathematical terms such aspects of reality, yet for millennia various religions and philosophies, not only of oriental origin, have been offering an analogous vision of the world as non-separate, but rather in a constant process of dynamic sharing. If this corresponds to the true reality, as also contemporary science points out to us, why so often the personal program of environmental management seems to use other references? Because of limitations, damages, stress. If separation, accentuated in these years at both individual and social level, proves to be an indication of discomfort and unbalance, communion, advocated by so many philosophies and religions and pointed out by the same western science, proves to be instead an indication of comfort and balance, to both individual and social level.

These are opposing aspects that typically manifest in a continuous dynamics within the person, showing without in his/her attitudes, choices, and level of comfort. To reduce our 'safety zone' (at any physical, mental, emotional, or other kind of level) automatically means to reduce our opportunities, our abilities, the possible solutions that constantly come to us and to which we have access. As in a Zen paradox, then true safety doesn't derive from closing, but rather from opening, freeing the person and allowing him/her to access the opportunities constantly offered at all different levels. It belongs to the experience of many therapists, and also to mine, that to facilitate in the person a condition of this type often leads to the resolution of the disease (of the most different kinds) even without having specifically addressed it. The access to information of better quality, and the increased ability at opening during their elaboration, in fact automatically allows the body system to work better and to resolve from the inside the limitations previously present, therefore making their presence an unnecessary nonsense. The personal disease, often dealt to the level of separation by the person, and resolved through a better communion with it and its implications, currently appears even a smaller problem when compared to the discomfort of a macro system like the world environment, that science teaches us to be one and the same with us, but that most of us observe with personal programs of environmental management seriously impaired by the stress of our current lifestyle.Paraphrasing the well known Laws of Cure of Dr. Hering, cornerstones of Applied Homeopathy ("the changes take place from the head down - the changes take place from the inside to the outside - the symptoms show in inverted order during the healing process"), it is then possible to wish that through the 'thinking head' formed by a sufficient number of individuals a change may take place, that constitutes first of all an internal change (in our vision of the world) rather than an external change, and that the confusion and the discordance that sometimes appear with particular evidence in the world today be nothing else but the proof of a backwards process of reorganization that shows its worse symptoms while manifesting their resolution.

TO HOMAGE JOHN THIE

When one talks about KINESIOLOGY anywhere in the world, it is impossible not to talk about JOHN FRANCIS THIE. JOHN THIE was born in Detroit, USA, on January 25th, 1933. In 1956 he graduated from Los Angeles College of Chiropractic and started the TOUCH FOR HEALTH Movement. He became a philosopher of the properties and possibilities of APPLIED KINESIOLOGY, which he applied avidly.Engaged in populists feelings, he considered himself married to APPLIED KINESIOLOGY, and believed many of its methods could be taught to and practiced by anyone as self-help methods.DR. JOHN THIE truly changed the face of alternative medicine when he developed the fundamentals of TOUCH FOR HEALTH. He was able to do that because of his Educator characteristics. And educative actions are very important to make great changes. If we think about, we can state that it is impossible to teach such different new things if he hasn’t a set of very good ideas as foundation to this kind of activities and so well taking the lead of this way. Educators do that, and he was an Educator! He had to transform actions, that came from his researches, into so significant, so expressive words to show how important is the change of concepts in complementary care. He was sure that he had the basis, the strong basis to what he was saying. This must have required so much intelligence, honesty and competence. JOHN THIE was a great mentor for people who believed in the strength and power of TOUCH FOR HEALTH. At the beginning, he faced many obstacles in developing his work. His vision and the commitment to coach nonprofessionals in TFH/AK were highly objected to by most of his colleagues. Aiming to benefit people through TFH, he wisely declared TFH a non-therapeutic method. Thus HE managed to move away from the clinical diagnostic design, supported by other institutions, He highlighted that TOUCH FOR HEALTH’S purpose was not to lessen specific conditions derived from physical disorders, but to restore the vital energy flow, reaching, through the meridians, the subtle energy that goes through the body, thus enhancing health. He also taught that TFH can be useful in disease prevention and to enhance the quality of life. The success of the first edition (1972) of his book Touch for Health: A Practical Guide to Natural Health Using Acupuncture, Touch & Massage, authored in collaboration with then-chiropractic student Mary Marks, is concrete evidence of his accomplishment. This book was translated into more than a dozen languages and more than 500.000 copies were sold. It also resulted in countless international workshops

associated with certification programs implemented by him.

DR. THIE passed away due to prostate cancer on August 3rd, 2005, in Malibu, California, USA, where he lived, leaving in mourning not only his family but everyone in the world of KINESIOLOGY.We KINESIOLOGISTS have to thank this memorable man, brave enough to lead us to a new model of alternative and complementary care, conceived and regulated to prevent diseases.

JOHN FRANCIS THIE, DCTOUCH FOR HEALTH

FOUNDER

January 25, 1933 August 3, 2005

We realize we are orphans but we know that despite our nostalgia we will always keep the memory of an extraordinary human being that profoundly touched so many lives.

Thank you JOHN THIE, for the great legacy you gave humanity.18 years ago I was first introduced to TFH. Nowadays, I work using its principles and feel privileged to have had access to everything I have learned from TFH in the field of KINESIOLOGY.

It is almost impossible for anyone to define all it stands for. It is something we have within, something to be felt.

Verônica Aguiar Pereira Affonso,~ IASK Board Member ~

We also lost Jean Francois Jaccard - DECEMBER, 14TH, 1947 - SEPTEMBER, 28TH, 2005

IN THE BOOK OF 25TH TFH ANNIVERSARY, JOHN THIE WROTE:

“JEAN FRANCOIS JACCARD, Holistic Trained Practitioner and massage Therapist became a TFH Instructor, translated the TFH book and charts to French, then became a TOUCH FOR HEALTH FOUNDATION Faculty member. He has a holistic health center in Geneva, Switzerland and, with his group of TOUCH FOR HEALTH Instructors, trained by him, sponsored the first International TOUCH FOR HEALTH International Conference in Switzerland. He continues to train TFH Instructors in his Institute in Geneva. He has introduced TFH in a number of hospitals and in medical groups. When I toured Europe in 1980 JEAN FRANCOIS arranged for me to speak and demonstrate TFH methods to a large medical psychiatric group and to the entire staff of one of the major hospitals in Paris, France.”

AND SYLVIANE VRILLONNEAU FINISHES THIS REPORT …

JEAN-FRANÇOIS didn't stop there. He gave many Kinesiology originators the opportunity to teach in his school. TOUCH FOR HEALTH, ONE BRAIN, PKP, HYPERTONI-X, APPLIED PHYSIOLOGY, and BLUEPRINT were all introduced to France from his school. There are very few teachers with a school in a French-speaking country who didn’t take a class in his school, or take a workshop with him, or have a teacher who was educated by JEAN-FRANÇOIS.

JEAN-FRANÇOIS dedicated his life to Kinesiology and worked hard to make it recognized by various governments. He created one of the first professional KINESIOLOGY ASSOCIATIONS, L'ASSOCIATION SUISSE ROMANDE DE KINÉSIOLOGIE PROFESSIONNELLE, and obtained the acceptance of Kinesiology by the Swiss health insurance system. He was still hard at work on this last summer when he passed...

It’s important to remember that JEAN-FRANÇOIS was also human being with his strong and weak points. Besides being a principal figure in Kinesiology, he was a great cook and especially enjoyed being with his students, colleagues and friends around a good meal, talking, joking and sharing.

We will miss him, and are grateful that he graced us with his enthusiasm and love.
