Axel extends internal mouldrelease lineA new advanced additive from Axel PlasticsResearch Laboratories improves pultrusion pro-cessing by optimizing line speed while reducingboth pull force and die wear, the companyclaims. New MoldWiz INT-PUL24 also yieldsmore-consistent mould parts that release moreeasily, are surface clean and ready to finish, saysAxel. Scrap is also reduced in the process.
The new INT-PUL24 internal mould release isheat activated. It works by reducing the cohesiveforces between molecules without delaying therequired fusion time. According to Axel, thepolymeric nature of the process does not interferewith secondary operations such as decorating, silk screening, printing, bonding or plating. Thewet out of fibres and fillers is improved whileresin viscosity is reduced, the company says.
“Overall our customers are saving time, labourand money as well as equipment ‘wear and tear’with this new internal release”, says GlennPfister, senior technical support engineer atAxel. He claims that processors are now able tomore fully realize substantial benefits for pul-trusion without any of the negative effects thatmay result from using ordinary commodity-typelubricants to aid processing and release.
New MoldWiz PUL24 is available in pellet, powder and liquid forms to accommodate alltypes of process equipment.

Engelhard unveils new specialeffect pigmentEngelhard Corp has introduced a new specialeffect pigment technology that provides design-ers and formulators with high reflectivity, shim-mer and transparency for plastics, coating andprinting ink applications.
According to Engelhard, the Firemist®
Turquoise special effect pigment creates ‘strong
visual impact and advanced optical effects’. Itutilizes thin borosilicate flakes, smooth surfaceand large particle-size distribution to achievethese special effects. Firemist Turquoise is saidto be ideal for a wide array of end-use applica-tions including cosmetic and personal care pack-aging, sporting goods, household appliances andelectronics components. “The dramatic sparkleand depth of Firemist Turquoise pigment, com-bined with its rich aquatic colouring capturesattention in a wide variety of end-use applica-tions, particularly when nature-based colours aredesired,” says Stephane Rochard, global market-ing manager, automotive and industrial marketsfor Engelhard’s special effect pigments. FiremistTurquoise’s features are reported to include neg-ligible flow lines, enabling design freedom fromtypical flow-line constraints in plastics; brilliantstar-like glitter with eye-catching effects inblue/teal/green colours; multi-colour effects todifferentiate products; and increased light pene-tration to produce enhanced depth, transparency, chroma and colour purity in coatings.
Firemist Turquoise special effect pigment canbe used in most resin systems, is compatiblewith both liquid and powder coatings and dis-perses easily, Engelhard says. It joinsEngelhard’s existing line of Firemist specialeffect pigments, which includes gold, red, vio-let, blue and green interference colours as wellas a white pearl.
In other company news, operating earningsfrom Engelhard’s Appearance and PerformanceTechnologies segment increased 19% fromUS$14 million in 4Q 2003 to $17 million in 4Q2004, excluding special charges. Quarterly salesrose 9% to $166 million.
