MATERIALS Axel extends internal mould release line A new advanced additive from Axel Plastics Research Laboratories improves pultrusion pro- cessing by optimizing line speed while reducing both pull force and die wear, the company claims. New MoldWiz INT-PUL24 also yields more-consistent mould parts that release more easily, are surface clean and ready to finish, says Axel. Scrap is also reduced in the process. The new INT-PUL24 internal mould release is heat activated. It works by reducing the cohesive forces between molecules without delaying the required fusion time. According to Axel, the polymeric nature of the process does not interfere with secondary operations such as decorating, silk screening, printing, bonding or plating. The wet out of fibres and fillers is improved while resin viscosity is reduced, the company says. “Overall our customers are saving time, labour and money as well as equipment ‘wear and tear’ with this new internal release”, says Glenn Pfister, senior technical support engineer at Axel. He claims that processors are now able to more fully realize substantial benefits for pul- trusion without any of the negative effects that may result from using ordinary commodity-type lubricants to aid processing and release. According to Engelhard, the Firemist ® Turquoise special effect pigment creates ‘strong visual impact and advanced optical effects’. It utilizes thin borosilicate flakes, smooth surface and large particle-size distribution to achieve these special effects. Firemist Turquoise is said to be ideal for a wide array of end-use applica- tions including cosmetic and personal care pack- aging, sporting goods, household appliances and electronics components. “The dramatic sparkle and depth of Firemist Turquoise pigment, com- bined with its rich aquatic colouring captures attention in a wide variety of end-use applica- tions, particularly when nature-based colours are desired,” says Stephane Rochard, global market- ing manager, automotive and industrial markets for Engelhard’s special effect pigments. Firemist Turquoise’s features are reported to include neg- ligible flow lines, enabling design freedom from typical flow-line constraints in plastics; brilliant star-like glitter with eye-catching effects in blue/teal/green colours; multi-colour effects to differentiate products; and increased light pene- tration to produce enhanced depth, transparency, chroma and colour purity in coatings. Firemist Turquoise special effect pigment can be used in most resin systems, is compatible with both liquid and powder coatings and dis- perses easily, Engelhard says. It joins Engelhard’s existing line of Firemist special effect pigments, which includes gold, red, vio- let, blue and green interference colours as well as a white pearl.
