NYS Math Module 1Lesson 15
I will be able to: multiply by exponents 5.NBT.2 find the quotient 5.NBT.7
Objective: Divide decimals using place value understanding, including remainders in the smallest unit.

1.7 ÷ 2 = ______
On your place value chart, show 1.7 by drawing number disks.
Let’s begin with our largest units. Can 1 be divided into 2 groups?
How many ones does each group get?
no
zeroHow can we keep sharing?
Draw the exchange on your boards. How many tenths do we have?
By exchanging the one for 10 tenths.
17 tenths
17 tenths divided by 2. How many tenths can we share with each group?
How many tenths are left over?

How can we keep sharing?
Draw the exchange on your boards. How many hundredths do we have?
By exchanging one tenth for 10 hundredths.
10 hundredths
Can we share 10 hundredths evenly? yes

Discuss with a partner.
One problem is divided by 4 and the other by 2. One has the dividend to the hundredths and the other to the tenths. For today’s problem, we had to think of 7 tenths as 70 hundredths.

sharing.
Solve this problem using an algorithm, while I record on a place value chart.

2.6 ÷ 4 = _____
First, I illustrate my problem on a place value chart. You write your problem using an algorithm.

Since we can’t share 2 ones, we regroup adding 20 tenths to the tenths. We share or divide 26 tenths by 4. So each group gets 6 tenths. We regroup the remaining 2 tenths.
We divide 20 hundredths by 4. Each group gets 5 hundredths. Our answer is 0.65.
Divide.
17 ÷ 4 = ______4.25What do you notice? Share with a partner. We have a remainder.
In 4th grade we recorded this as r1. What have we done today that lets us keep
sharing? We regroup. We exchange ones for tenths and tenths for hundredths.
Solve this problem with a partner. One of you solve using an algorithm and the other
using a place value chart.
