We are committed to engaged giving. We want to make a significant impact, take a risk, own our potential, and help bring long-lasting, positive change to our community.

SVP is the Charlotte affiliate of an international

organization tackling challenging social issues

through venture philanthropy. We invest in promising

nonprofits, providing them not only our dollars but

also our time and professional expertise in a multi-

year partnership.

In 2016, SVP worked shoulder to shoulder with the

seven nonprofits (our Investees) featured in this Impact

Report. SVP Partners (members) were engaged by

providing strategic planning and counseling, legal,

marketing, and financial services, Board development,

and a myriad of other ways to help strengthen our

Investee organizations and thus increase their impact

in our community. Please enjoy reading about the

amazing work these nonprofits are providing our city.

The second way SVP strives to give back to our

community is through our annual program SEED20,

where we identify and highlight 20 of the most

innovative ideas or organizations for bringing positive

social change to our region. 2016 marked our five-year

anniversary where we honored our many SEED20

alumni and enjoyed connecting the SEED20 Class of

2016 nonprofits to our audience of over 800 in the

Knight Theater.

Our work is possible through the commitment of 140

members of SVP who believe in this model of giving

and are dedicated to rolling up their sleeves and

becoming engaged with the nonprofits working to

bring opportunity to everyone in our city. I thank each

of you for your day-to-day efforts and your participation

in our shared vision.

SVP feels like an extension of our Board; we share our dreams and challenges and they come alongside us with practical resources and support.

“— Michele Dudley

Founder/Executive Director

In Charlotte, F&C serves women overcoming addiction, domestic abuse, exploitation, generational poverty, homelessness, and incarceration, as well as refugees and immigrants. Women are paid to attend the jewelry projects where they make jewelry and learn work-readiness skills, build a supportive community and connect with community resources to help them address their individual challenges and prepare for a stable, self-sufficient future.

SVP has come alongside F&C with funding and practical support to help address operational challenges they are facing due to rapid growth. F&C is using the funding to hire a new Operations Manager and invest in technology to create operational efficiency and ultimately greater impact on the women they serve.

Through the SEED20 Class of 2016, SVP was introduced to Fashion & Compassion (F&C), a Charlotte-based nonprofit whose

vision is to transform communities through holistic economic empowerment that brings dignity & opportunity to individuals

who have been caught in a web of poverty & injustice as they heal spiritually, emotionally & physically. Fashion & Compassion

is based in Charlotte but also operates small projects in the Atlanta area, Charleston, and Uganda, and partners with organi-

zations in five other countries.

Digi-Bridge

— David Jessup Jr. Founder

Digi-Bridge’s growth is a direct reflection of SVP’s support, guidance and investment.

“The Economics and Statistics Administration reports that over the past 10 years, growth in STEM jobs was three times as fast as growth in non-STEM related jobs. How are we preparing our scholars for their future in the work place? The opportunities to explore STEAM (science, technology, en-gineering, arts and mathematics) must be made available to all K-8 scholars, especial-ly to those in our neighborhoods of promise where women and people of color are often un-derserved, in order to bridge the digital divide.

Digi-Bridge aims to equip shareholders with the means to foster optimal use of technology in the learning environment, ensuring that all 21st century scholars have opportunities to succeed in the digital age. SVP has embraced this mission, and through a three-year commitment to supporting staff growth and strategic planning, Digi-Bridge exceeded their 2016 goal of providing STEAM engagement to 500 scholars. This year, they plan on serving 1,000 scholars.

In 2016, as part of their digital consultancy efforts, Digi-Bridge spearheaded the development of The

SWARM, a FIRST LEGO League competitive robotics team, which went on to represent the only Title I elementary in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools at the regional competition. Digi-Bridge will continue to expand the impact of this program to train and prepare as many as five facilitators and 50 students for competition in 2017.

OurBRIDGE supports the refugee and immigrant communities by offering a one-of- a-kind enrichment program for newly arrived and 1st generation American children. We advocate for the success, happiness and fair treatment of their families as they acculturate to the United States.

Even as the uncertainty of refugees’ and immigrants’ future in the US continues to grow, we are glad to see unprecedented involvement from new community members to support our work. We are looking forward to expanding our K-5 after-school program to include fifty 6th graders and moving to a bigger center; and are partnering with UNCC to offer full-day summer programming.

Heart Math Tutoring (Heart) is a math intervention program that recruits, trains and supports volunteers to work as tutors in high-poverty elementary schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. SVP has been involved with Heart since its inception. In 2010, SVP convened a focus group that identified a gap in structured, effective tutoring options for willing volunteers. Upon finding no existing programs for investment, and in an unusual twist for SVP’s model, SVP “birthed” Heart! Partners worked directly with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Communities In Schools to create a program that would ultimately stand on its own.

Having the honor of serving as Heart’s first Executive Director since July 2013, I am floored by the impact SVP has made on Charlotte students through its financial and human capital support of Heart. Backed by significant SVP board leadership, ongoing support by the Steering Operations Committee, and Lead Partner engagement, the program has obtained nonprofit status and grown from serving 105 to 660 students with a $640K operating budget. Currently, Heart is in 12 school sites and has over 750 weekly volunteer tutors (including 29 SVP Partners!).

“SVP continues to be a crucial part of the growth and success of ourBRIDGE. SVP has helped us build a strong infrastructure that is allowing us to grow not just quickly, but wisely. We wouldn’t be here without their expertise and continuous emotional, and of course, financial support.”

Circle de LuzCircle de Luz is radically empowering young Latinas by supporting their transformation through extensive mentoring, holistic programming, and scholarship funds for post high school education. Circle de Luz’s partnership with Social Venture Partners has led to tangible growth in areas such as capacity building, strategic thinking, marketing & communications, and overall organizational and leadership development. Over the past three years of our partnership, Circle de Luz has seen 14 young women graduate from the program and 13 enroll in a post-secondary educational program – a 93% success rate.

Our mission continues to be driven by commitment and passion. We believe that broadening our girls’ horizons will help develop new goals and skills and result in increased self-confidence as they tackle new lifestyles and challenges. Circle de Luz has made great strides in proving to our members that their future is broad and limitless.

Youth Development Initiatives (YDI)

CommonWealth Charlotte (CWC)

Youth Development Initiatives Inc. seeks to maximize the potential in underprivileged, at-risk youth and the agencies that work with them by devising curriculum and training modules that establish effective guidance courses, after school and mentoring programs, and summer enrichment initiatives founded on research and widely recognized best practices. YDI program designs and curriculum encourages students to stay in school, develop personal action plans, serve their community, and develop the job-readiness skills necessary to compete in an ever-changing, 21st Century global marketplace.

We needed definitive direction and strategic support to help return us to the ‘soul’ of our purpose and passion – which is equipping at-risk and disadvantaged high school kids with the essential life and career planning skills to graduate prepared to make it in life! SVP has helped guide YDI in that definitive direction in 2016. - Darryl Bego

The mission of Common Wealth Charlotte (CWC) is to create pathways for Charlotte’s working poor to greater financial stability through specialized financial education, access to traditional banking services, and small, low-interest loans. As we serve individuals in the Charlotte community on a daily basis, we are also pioneering a movement. Clinical studies have shown that living paycheck-to-paycheck creates severe trauma to the structure of the brain.

Our curriculum is trauma-informed, taking this likelihood into account. Our goal is to move our clients further along a continuum towards sustainable financial health. We are providing financial life skills taught in a new and different way.

SVP has been with us from the start providing guidance and expertise through its Partners (members) in addition to financial support to help fund our start-up phase. In less than two years, CWC has become the pillar agency for financial capability services for 16 human services agencies allowing us to provide financial education to over 2,000 clients, open bank accounts for 300 clients, and issue 65 loans. CWC has helped numerous clients escape predatory lenders and secure credible, affordable banking services. The CWC model is having a long-term, positive impact on our working poor. - Darren Ash

Social Venture Partners is a philanthropic organization passionately attacking the issue of social and economic inequality in Charlotte through venture philanthropy.

Charlotte ranks among the fastest-growing USA gateway cities for immigrants with nearly one-quarter of a million immigrants and 17,000 refugees from around the world. These children struggle with complex issues including poverty, family separation, cultural shock, and learning English.

Thousands of low-wage workers in Charlotte have no bank account and poor credit, forcing many to pay over 10% of their income to access their earnings and turn to predatory lenders.

Based on 2016 3rd-8th grade EOGs, only 44% of economically disadvantaged students (EDS) in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) are performing on grade level in math, 20% lower than non-EDS peers.

Older, at-risk youth are an underserved student population across the nation.

The high rate of teenage pregnancy, low high- school graduation and college completion rate among Latinas.

OurBRIDGE for KIDS provides a bridge for these children to learn English and be part of a learning community that supports them (and their families) and values their cultures.

In its first year of operation, CommonWealth Charlotte provided financial education to 1,600 clients, “banked” over 100 clients who previously had no bank account, and provided 20 clients with low-interest loans.

In 2016, Heart Math Tutoring offered one-on-one support from Heart volunteer tutors, serving over 650 students across twelve high-poverty CMS elementary schools.

YDI offers a three-year development program for at-risk high school students providing life skills training, mentoring, and employment opportunities to insure students graduate ready for life after high school.

Fourteen girls have successfully participated in the Circle de Luz program, receiving monthly programming and mentoring (and scholarship upon high school graduation). Circle graduated its first cohort of girls in 2014.

As a program of Social Venture Partners,

the goal of SEED20 is to identify, spotlight,

and support twenty  of the most  innovative

ideas or organizations tackling our region’s

most  challenging problems.  Over the course of seven

weeks, the selected  participants receive coaching

and mentoring on how to succinctly and powerfully

“tell their story”.  The SEED20 program culminates in

SEED20 OnStage, a high-energy event where up to ten

participants compete to win cash awards. Each finalist

makes a three-minute pitch to a panel of judges and the

audience. Many have used the program as a launching

pad for their nonprofit and have gone on to dramatically

increase their size, revenue, reach and their overall

impact.

We identify 20 nonprofits that will inspire you. Their

ideas will spark change in the way you think about our

community. Their stories will ignite your passion for

making Charlotte a better place.

SEED20 celebrated it’s 5th year on April 11th at

the Knight Theater. Starting at the uptown campus

at  UNC  Charlotte in 2012, progressing to the Bank of

America auditorium,  and  last year hosting the event

in the Knight Theater with an audience of over 800.

This growth has meant incredible benefits  for the 20

participating nonprofits and for the community overall.

The first event was a true team effort and we were amazed at the accomplish- ments of the steering committee, the coaches, and the volunteers.  However, the stars of the show, then and now, were the nonprofit entrepreneurs! As in the for-profit world, innovation in the nonprofit world is paramount to address -ing critical challenges in our community.

An appreciation for collective giving organizations brought Meredith Sain to SVP in May 2015, and she immediately began volunteering with several Investees and SVP Issue committees.

Most recently, Meredith served on the 2016 Investment Team; charged with selecting the new SVP Investee(s), a collaborative experience she thoroughly enjoyed. She and another member of the Investment Team chose to further their impact by serving as SVP Lead Partners for one of the new Investees, Fashion and Compassion.

Meredith is a Vice President with Salem Investment Partners, a mezzanine debt fund investing in middle market companies. Her professional experience has been helpful in her roles on the Investment Committee and helping Investees evaluate various operating decisions and challenges.

Originally from a small town in North Carolina, Meredith is a graduate of Wake Forest University. In addition to her volunteer work, Meredith is an avid reader, enjoys cycling and spending time with family. She and her husband, Seth, are proud parents to their newborn son Logan.

SVP has provided us with exposure to truly inspiring social entrepreneurs and has been a very effective

vehicle to help us give back to our community in a fun and constructive way.

“— Caryn and Richard Lee

SVP Partners

Caryn and Richard joined SVP in 2013.  They learned of SVP while Caryn served on the board of a previous SVP Investee, Sow Much Good. They liked the model, particularly the opportunity to provide leadership and strategic advice to support the growth of SVP’s innovative nonprofit Investees.

They have both enjoyed supporting Seed20, SVP’s annual program for entrepreneurs, for multiple years. This has included providing candidate coaching, serving on the Steering Committee, and enhancing and leading the candidate selection process.

Caryn has led Leadership Development workshops for the Seed20 Alumni Network and Circle de Luz, an SVP Investee. Richard serves as Vice-Chair on the board of ourBRIDGE for KIDS, a Seed20 finalist and SVP Investee.
