From the Director’s Desk . . .
Of all the self-fulfilling prophecies in our culture, the assumption that aging means decline and poor health is probably the deadliest.
~ Marilyn Ferguson
Finally Spring! It’s nice to have the warm weather back. This
month, we celebrate Older Americans Month, Mothers’ Day,
National Senior Health & Fitness Day, and Memorial Day.
Fun Facts:
The number of people age 60+ in Monroe County has grown
119% since 2010 — from 29,401 to 35,026 people.
In 2016, the Center provided 85,857 hours of service to over
1,700 people. (Signing in and out helps us get this number.)
Seniors centers provide a place for older adults to interact with
others — helping to enhance our overall well being.
National Senior Health & Fitness Day on May 24th promises to be a
great day. This is the 6th year that we’ve held this event; starting
in 2012 when we had Jeff Nichols, the runner-up on the Biggest
Loser. This year, we have Sister Beth Wood, a runner, talking with
us about the benefits of life-long movement.
On that day, we’ll be offering blood pressure checks, blood sugar
checks, blood cholesterol and height and weight, plus there will be
several agencies available to talk with you about health issues. At
9 am, you’re invited to Jo Lynn’s Movin’ and Groovin’ exercise
class free of charge. The day offers a perfect combination of
health information and fitness tips. We’re very fortunate to be
able to provide this event — courtesy of DTE Energy — a wonderful
corporate citizen and supporter.
We’ll end the Month of May with our Sunday $5.00 Special, the
Potluck Lunch on Memorial Day, and the Soup and Sandwich
Special on Wednesday, May 31.
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the women who give of themselves to
care for others, and thank you to all of those who sacrificed their
lives fighting for our freedom. We live in a wonderful County —
and I thank you for making our part of the world a little brighter.
Blessings.

They had “A League of Their Own” During World War II, when all the men were fighting in the war, most of the jobs that were left vacant were filled in by women. Baseball was no exception. A well-known candy manufacturer came up with the idea to create a professional baseball league for women. His goal was to keep the sport alive, but also make a buck or two. Farm girls and sisters Dottie and Kit compete at everything and become part of the league. These women, along with their team-mates, begin a journey that opens up a whole new world, far beyond that of the baseball diamond. Starring Academy Award winners Geena Davis and Tom Hanks, A League of Their Own (which was released 25 years ago this summer) will be shown on Wednesday, May 31, at 1:30 pm. Popcorn and pop will be served. Join your friends for the true story of women in baseball.

From the Program Manager….
It’s officially spring because the Detroit Tigers have kicked off the season! We enjoyed an Opening Day Party here at the Center and were treated to a comeback victory. Thank you
to Floral City Beverage, our snack sponsor for the Tiger games for the second consecutive year. Stay tuned for the next Watch Party, and hot dogs (healthy ones) will be on the menu!
I’m a pretty lucky baseball fan. The Tigers won the World Series when I was 2.5 weeks old. There’s even a picture
of my Dad and me watching Game 7 before he headed into work that night. And although the Tigers got pretty bad after
that, I warmly remember the magical summer of 1976. When the Monroe Ford Plant did a family outing to Tiger Stadium, I
got to see Mark “the Bird” Fidrych pitch! It was amazing to see him….one of my fondest childhood memories. My love of
baseball continued. I was always amazed that Ernie Harwell knew that a guy from Petoskey or a gal from Cadillac caught a
foul ball. How could he possibly know that? During the 1984 season, Tiger fans
from everywhere proclaimed “Bless You Boys!” as Sparky Anderson managed the team to another World Series championship.
The ups and downs of the Tigers followed, but in the late 1980s, I was distracted by a wise (and good looking) baseball player, Crash Davis
(played by Kevin Costner) in the movie Bull Durham. It is my all-time favorite movie and offers us some basic lessons about life, and baseball.
For example, “This is a simple game: You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball!” as well as the simple but direct “Sometimes you win.
Sometimes you lose. Sometimes, it rains.” When a baseball player is getting married, we were advised, “Candlesticks make a nice gift.”
Baseball Annie (played by Susan Sarandon) also shared the wisdom of Walt Whitman: “I see great things in baseball. It’s
our game, the American game. It will repair our losses and be a blessing to us.”
No matter how good or bad they were, the Tigers were a blessing here in Michigan. Baseball
seemed to be a connecting point, a way to start a conversation with a stranger. That was evident in the
last game played at Tiger Stadium in September 1999. The place was packed and the stadium shook
when the fans did “The Wave.” I was lucky enough to attend that game and it really was magical. The
Tigers won and the fans were delighted that many former players came to say good-bye. Although the
corner of Michigan & Trumbull is empty and waiting to be re-developed, the memories remain. These days, I attend a game every few years at Comerica Park. Like
other fans, I was so disappointed when the Tigers came up short in the World Series in 2006 and 2012. I was thrilled when Justin Verlander threw
his two no hitters and Max Scherzer won the Cy Young Award. Miguel Cabrera’s beautiful home run swing dazzles us. And tears were shed by many fans when Ernie Harwell and Mark Fidrych passed away.
So here we are, another season of promise. It’s spring, it’s baseball
season; who knows what is in store for us? If nothing else, let’s enjoy it.
Karen
