Skill: Google how to take a partial screen shot. o Take a partial screen shot for practice – see where the image is saved. Skill: Find the RSS feed to one of your favorite news sites o What is RSS? RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it. o Why RSS? Benefits and Reasons for using RSS. RSS allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually. You ensure your privacy, by not needing to join each site's email newsletter. o RSS feed aggregators. There are many available online. I use Feedly. Skill: Using Google’s Advanced Search o Search for a PDF of Marshall McLuhan’s The Medium is the Message o Search for a Powerpoint presentation of a topic of interest Skill: Using Google Advanced Image Search o Search for black and white image of a phonograph that is free to reuse/share. Skill: Reserve Image Search using Google o Download a black and white image of Ada Lovelace that has a resolution of at least 800 x 600 is available for reuse/sharing. o What is Ada Lovelace known for? Find an image of her algorithm. Skill: Searching Google Scholar o Do a search for articles and books related to “social media” and “attention” on Google Scholar. Reduce that list to articles about “Twitter” and with no mentioned of “Facebook.” Skill: Using Google Advanced Book Search o Go to Google Advanced Book Search. Search for books written between 1840 and 1860 that have the word “telegraph” in the title Skill: Searching a specific site o Go to www.eapoe.org. Search across the site (which include most of Poe’s works) for all appearances of the word “melancholy” Skill: Licensing your work through Creative Commons o Go to www.creativecommons.org. Click on “Share your work” and then create the following license for your work: Selected License Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International Copy the embed copy and then paste it in a draft blog post on the course website.
