Research Basics

This can be a detailed process. I am going to skim the surface

There are four basic steps in the research process

1. Background material

2. Form issues, questions, and a thesis

3. Find research citations

4. Select articles and books

Background Material Have a broad topic. Consult the encyclopedia. There are general

encyclopedias located in the BYUI Library. -- Or there is the BYUI online database, which also has encyclopedias.

It will be important to locate General information on the subject Names of important authorities Source citations Sub categories Terminology

Forming Issues/Thesis

Consult specialized encyclopedias for more information on a particular topic.

Narrow the topic Pick a statement that will best show what

the paper will be about. -- That will become the thesis.

Find Research Citations / Select Articles and Books

Time to find a lot more detailed information

Look for books, periodical articles, peer-reviewed journals, etc.

Remember to cite your sources

Know your Audience

After researching it is important to know the audience before writing the paper.

Questions to ask: Does the audience know anything about this

topic? Does this audience share a common knowledge/

belief?

After you know your audience it is important to know what tone to write in.

Are you writing in a formal tone? Or an informal tone?

• Graphics are important because they can clarify, or prove a point.

• Graphics can be a picture, map, graph, chart, etc.
