From the Executive Director, Shelley Geoghegan

The mission of the Enfield Village Association (EVA) is to bring the

community together to initiate and facilitate activities and projects that

enhance the Town of Enfield’s cultural, historical, recreational, and

natural resources, while promoting economic development and build-

ing community pride.

This directive is carried out by a volunteer Board of Directors, a fifteen

-hour Executive Director, a ten-hour Administrative Assistant, and

many volunteers from the community. We would like to thank our

many volunteers for all the hours they have put into supporting our

work, most especially our dedicated Board of Directors and Commit-

tee Chairs, all of whom take on a large share of the work load.

Turn the page to read reports for the Design, Events, Economic Devel-

opment, and Greeley House Committees. Other Committees that

aren’t as visible but are crucial to our operating success are the Finance

Committee (Gary Gaudette, Chair), and the Development Committee

(Deb Ford, Chair). The Finance Committee collaborates with the

Treasurer and Executive Director to come up with a viable yearly

budget, plus they perform a yearly audit to ensure that everything is on

track. The Development Committee takes on the difficult task of or-

ganizing our Annual Appeal, a crucial piece of our funding. Of course

anyone who wishes to be a donor can give at any time. Our website

has a button that links to PayPal to offer a convenient way to donate,

including the ability to make monthly recurring payments.

We look forward to another year of working hard to follow our mission

for the benefit of the entire Enfield community. Would you like to

help? Give us a call. We always need volunteers for specific projects.

EVA’S MANY FUNDING SOURCES:

As with most nonprofit organizations,

our operating funds come from a variety

of income streams.

Our primary source of income is our An-

nual Appeal. This goes out in the fall,

and is coordinated by our Development

Committee.

Our fundraising events which include the

Shaker 7 Road Race, a Fall Music Recit-

al, and some smaller events or campaigns

such as Flower Power sales (coordinated

by volunteer Janet Lovely), and sales at

the Town Wide Yard Sale bring in anoth-

er large chunk.

In the spring, after Enfield voters have

approved the budget, we receive a varia-

ble line item disbursement designated for

our work on Economic Development.

Individual donors, many of whom are

long-time supporters, make up the rest of

the funds. The Greeley House project is

separate from the operating budget, and

that committee does their own fundrais-

ing.

Events Committee

This fall EVA welcomed new members June Marshall and Flossy Courtemanche to the Events Committee.

This committee is responsible for holding community events that bring new people to town, improving the quality of

life for local residents and maximizing income opportunities.

Our annual music fundraiser was held in November with the Sunflower Quartet performing. The members of

this quartet are Ann Givens, Steve Jordan, Tom Norton and Carolyn Stone. The Sunflower Quartet is a quartet com-

posed of a flute, an oboe, a clarinet and a bassoon. A quartet of all woodwind instruments is unusual but the music was

wonderful. They played pieces from Mozart to Joplin captivating the audience with every selection.

Hometown Holidays held the first Saturday in December at the Enfield Community Building was a great suc-

cess despite the rainy weather. This annual free event for children and their parents is a nice way to bring community

members together and kick off the holiday season

Richard Vincent was unable to give horse-drawn wagon rides this year but Santa Claus (Dave Walthour) still

visited and John Burritt provided the music to help get us in the holiday spirit. We held the usual Cookie Decorating,

Craft Workshop and Story Time for the children with good participation. These activities were coordinated by Sylvia

Dow, Agnes Guay, Francine Lozeau and Shirley Green respectively. A huge thank you goes to Lynn Picard for baking

12 dozen ginger bread cookies! Lynn is ‘retiring’ from this responsibility after five years so we’ll need a new baker(s)

for next year.

The One Day Café coordinated by Sharon Carr and her volunteer group of bakers was a delicious success as

always. The wreath decorating activity was coordinated by Flossy Courtemanche along with Robin Parker and Debbie

LaCroix. Thank you also to Shelley Geoghegan for coordinating the Holiday Market.

Please consider joining our group. The Events Committee is committed to making events fun for both the audi-

ence and the volunteers!

Sincerely,

GREELEY HOUSE PROJECT GRANT

This year EVA was pleased to be the recipient of a grant from the New Hampshire Community De-

velopment Financing Authority (NHCDFA) for the Greeley House Renovation Project.

Each year the New Hampshire Legislature allocates tax credits to NHCDFA to be used to support

local improvement projects. This year NHCDFA had two million dollars of tax credits to disburse,

but received grant applications totaling over six million dollars. With 3 to 1 odds, we were especial-

ly honored to be chosen as one of the projects to be funded to the full amount of our grant request.

Each project is thoroughly vetted, including site visits and interviews by NHCDFA staff. In addition

to the tremendous funding boost, we feel this is a validation of the Greeley House Renovation Pro-

ject.

Special thanks go to Doug Smith for many hours spent researching, writing and shepherding the

NHCDFA grant to a successful result. See the Greeley House Committee report for more details.

Donors supporting EVA’s Greeley House Project through the NHCDFA program receive 75% of

their donation back in the form of tax credits that can be used to pay their NH business tax obliga-

tions. In addition, the donor can also deduct the donation on their federal tax return. The net result

is businesses and individuals with business tax liabilities can make a donation for around fifteen cents on the dollar.

Supporters who have chosen to leverage their donation through the NHCDFA program and keep their NH tax dollars working in

the local community are as follows:

Greeley House Committee

2014 was a strenuous year for EVA's Greeley House Committee, in which we stepped up the pace of our mission to

convert a dilapidated but historically important structure into a new home for EVA combined with an affordable single

family residence. Bi-monthly committee meetings throughout the year focused on two main areas: construction and

fundraising. On the construction front, the Enfield Planning Board approved our plans in January and we went to

work repairing the foundation, improving the drainage, and stripping the interior. Next came the creation of the EVA

office space in two front rooms on the ground floor, including handicapped accessibility. In May the space was ready

for occupancy and we celebrated with an open house.

By this point we had invested about $140,000 of the $365,000 project budget, including about $20,000 worth of in-

kind contributions from our volunteers and contractors. While volunteers continued work on demolition in the rental

space and on structural remediation, the committee turned our major focus to fund-raising. The Greeley House capital

campaign, having raised $37,000 in 2013, continued during 2014 to raise another $23,000, primarily from individuals.

Late last year we learned of a promising way to tap into the business community, and in February the chairman attend-

ed a workshop on the New Hampshire Community Development Finance Authority (CDFA) tax credit program.

There followed an arduous application process culminating in an award from CDFA of $187,500 in New Hampshire

state tax credits, which when sold to New Hampshire business taxpayers, will net the Greeley House project $150,000.

$125,000 must be raised by 3/31/15 and another $62,500 by 3/31/16. In August four EVA representatives attended a

sales workshop. A list of prospects was developed and by year end $104,000 had been raised toward the 3/31/15 goal

of $125,000.

In April Mascoma Savings Bank approved our application for an $80,000 mortgage loan, the proceeds of which can

be drawn during construction, with any residual balance remaining after other funding sources are exhausted, convert-

ed to a 25 year permanent loan. The loan has closed and we anticipate utilizing some portion of it during the upcoming

construction season.

Our goal in 2015 is to complete, with volunteers and funds on hand, the exterior walls, windows and siding on the

Main Street side. We shall sell an additional $83,500 in tax credits. When this has been accomplished, and the CDFA

funding assured, we shall utilize our construction loan to renovate the porch and complete the interior of the rental

unit. We shall begin work on a plan to improve the parking area, subject to additional funding and permitting.

Economic Development Committee

In 2014, this committee continued the monthly meet ups through Business Coffees, Lunch and Learn, and

After Hours events. In these events we get to know other businesses in Enfield, often meeting at their place

of business. We invite new businesses to join and have an opportunity to discuss other events or projects un-

der way through EVA.

We held a Business Summit discussion in the spring focused on "Promoting our businesses and promoting

Enfield". We started working on a "Welcome Packet" for new residents to Enfield. This group was also in-

volved in the charrette plan for the lakeside lots on Main Street. Additionally, a new brochure was created

aimed at attracting businesses to town.

Last year was the first year Enfield took part in "Small Business Saturday", a national campaign held the Sat-

urday after Thanksgiving to help promote small and local businesses. While our involvement was minimal

this time around, with community volunteers Lori Bliss Hill, Kate Plumley Stewart, and Kristin Harrington

running the show, we have already started planning for stronger support and organization for

November of 2015.

Design Committee

The activities of the Design Committee for 2014 started with the taking down of the holiday decorations which were

put up the Sunday after Thanksgiving. The kissing balls were stored for next season and the bows salvaged.

In May we purchased the plants which would go in the hanging baskets on Main Street and at the Greeley House.

There are two baskets on each lamppost. We also purchased two window boxes for the Greeley House, painted these

to match the siding. Helpers gathered in mid-May to plant the baskets and window boxes. The baskets were transport-

ed to Main Street by volunteers Dick and Ann Corr, and then hung by the Enfield Grounds crew. During the summer

volunteers went along Main Street to “dead head” the flowers and fertilize as needed. The plants were watered by the

town. The town also helped take these down and transported them to the Lynch Barn (they are very heavy). The

planters were then emptied and put away for the winter.

During the summer months, the committee also tended the Mother’s garden, the flag pole

garden, George’s garden and weeded the islands.

Starting in summer the Scarecrow Project got under way. About 80 scarecrows were cre-

ated and staged along main roads, in front of participating businesses and on the rail trail.

These were also recollected and stored prior to winter. Unfortunately, 10 scarecrows were

stolen or destroyed along the rail trail and the Shaker Bridge. We hope to sponsor some

scarecrow building workshops at the farmers market this summer.

Garlands and wreaths were then ordered for the holidays and kissing balls and lights test-

ed. Two kissing balls required new lights. On the Sunday after Thanksgiving a group of

volunteers decorated downtown with the kissing balls, garlands and wreaths.

These projects are loved by the town. In order to keep these wonderful projects going, we

are looking for additional help. If you are interested in volunteering please contact the

Shaker 7 Road Race & Walk-A-Thon

Our signature fundraiser, the Shaker 7 Road Race & Walk-

A-Thon was a great success in 2014! With the acceptance of our

race into the New Hampshire Grand Prix Race Series, and the Up-

per Valley Running Club’s Running Series, we pulled in a record

number of runners.

The day turned out to be beautiful weather, unlike the pre-

vious year. Our participants come from all over New England, and

some from beyond. With advertising in various online venues and

calendars, and information being handed out by the UVRS, as well

as our usual list of return runners, we had at least 125 registrations

this year.

Other new features that were well-received included cool-

ing towels for the runners, a cash prize for the best overall “Adam

& Eve” finalists, a new selection of prizes, picture awards, and an

expanded food selection. We were warned that more people would

be showing up for the 2015 race for the food alone!

This fundraising event couldn’t be as successful as it is

without the tremendous help of all our volunteers who put in hours

of hard work to make it happen. Additionally, our event business

sponsors make it even more profitable and visible.
