Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Croydon Hills Primary School is excited to be participating.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 8 September 2017.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. If you would like your child‘s name to appear on the Honour Roll, please sign the form sent to all families on Compass and return it as soon as possible..

Tomorrow, we are paying our last match for the term, against Great Ryrie Primary School. I would like to extend a very big thank you to all the parents who have assisted us this term with sports coaching, scoring or supervising. We are in the throes of selections for Term 2 Interschool sport. The Year 6s will be placed in a sport first, then we fill the vacant spots with the Year 5s. The trials have started and final teams will be completed soon. The sports which are being offered are Football, Soccer, Netball A – Girls only, Netball B – Mixed, Netball C – beginners, Tennis, Softball Boys & Softball Girls, and Volleystars. We will need the assistance of parents again next term, as we don’t have enough staff for the 9 teams. There will also be a Friday Fun Group as we did this term. This will be for the children who were not selected to play a sport, as our numbers don’t allow for all children in the senior school to be in a team. If you are able to assist with a sport, please contact the school through your class teacher.

House Cross Country House Cross Country for Years 3 - 6 will be held on Tuesday May 2

nd, commencing at 9.00am. All students in these years will

be expected to participate in this event. House Cross Country is also used to determine our Cross Country team, which will represent our school on Tuesday May 23

rd at the District Cross Country Competition. The top 10 students in each age group will

be running at Park Orchards on this day. The event will go live on Compass soon, so could I ask parents to please get onto this immediately as the permission for the House Cross Country is needed as the students will be running outside of the school boundary into Yarrunga. Please note this is not an optional participation event, but a compulsory of the PE curriculum. We will also be doing a practice run during PE lessons prior to the event, so that students know where they are running. They will be given a map in their classroom, however, nothing is better than actually doing the track itself. I would also appreciate the assistance of as many parents as possible to man the corners and supervise in areas outside of the school grounds, as we do not have anywhere near enough staff to do this. A letter will go home with a map to those parents who are able to help out. There will be a letter attached on the bottom of the Compass window, which you can fill in and return to the class teacher if you are able to help out. Thank you very much for your time if you are able to assist us. Noreen McMenaman - Sport / PE

HEALTHY COPING STRATEGIES IN THE SENIOR SCHOOL

I have recently spent 2 sessions in the Senior School classes to discuss Healthy Coping Strategies.

Coping is the term used for how we ‘deal’ or ‘manage’ the challenges, disappointments, adversities etc in our lives. Developing

Healthy Coping Strategies leads to increased Resilience and Happiness in our lives.

Firstly, your children were able to identify many of the challenges we may face in our lives not only as children but as adults.

We then discussed the difference between Healthy and Unhealthy strategies. Your children were able to identify many of the

unhealthy strategies. The healthy strategies was a bit more of a challenge….many of the responses were ‘just don’t think about

it’ ‘ignore it’ etc. It was important for the kids to learn that those responses are not actually strategies and are ‘easier said than

Page 6: eNewsletter - Croydon Hills Primary School · Amana Tweedie had the Year 3s & 4s rocking in the Stadium Wakakirri rehearsals for the ... Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged

Telephone: 9725 1206 OSHC 9724 4514

done’. A Coping Strategy specifically is something that actually changes the way you think or feel so it has a physiological

response. The kids were thrilled to learn that many of the things they love doing are healthy coping strategies, for example sport,

music and drawing.

‘Why do people choose the unhealthy strategies?’ We then discussed the very important issue of how the unhealthy strategies

are often a ‘quick fix’ so they feel immediate relief from their big thoughts and feelings but the long term outcome is detrimental,

usually due to the addictive nature of these strategies, such as alcohol, food and video games to name a few.

Secondly, we focused in on the healthy strategies and how your children can benefit from practising and having a range of

different strategies. We specifically focused on the 3 key strategies that research says have the strongest wellbeing outcomes

and they are; 1. Belly Breathing; 2. Positive Self-talk; 3. Asking an adult for help.

They then made a Coping Card which they will keep with them where they feel it will serve them best as a reminder. Please talk

to your children about these cards and if possible open up a discussion about how you as a parent cope with things. As a school

we are very focused on giving kids the skills they need to have resilience and good mental health for life.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like any more info regarding this program.

Regards, Mia

Our Eco Leaders Visit Phillip Island On Wednesday, Mrs Kitching took the Eco Leaders to Phillip island for a day to learn about the environment, local and school environmental problems and how we can change them. Our school’s biggest problem was how much rubbish is floating around the school, so please DO NOT LITTER

While we were there we got to build little houses for the little penguins, we played some games and we get to go back in September and do this activity called Kids Teaching Kids. We had a lot of fun and we can't wait to go back soon.

Also, we would like everyone to go onto the website www.penguins.org.au and pledge to use bubbles instead of balloons. When you do balloon releases, the birds can eat the balloons and die.

Superheroes costume, just plain old free dress is fine)

Please bring a gold coin donation for the Good Friday Appeal. The money goes towards a very worthy cause, raising funds for The Royal Children’s Hospital.

Last year, over 45,000 children were admitted to The Royal Children’s Hospital and over 90,000 children were treated in emergency.
