Prayer for the week

Lord Jesus, thank you for your goodness to us this half term, please give us a good break and bring usback safely the next half term. Amen

It is almost unbelievable that we have reached the end of the first half term already. Where has all thetime gone? It seems like only a few days ago that we were welcoming the new Year 7s and 12s to theschool. Now they are very much integrated in to the family and making their mark through theircontributions to our school community and not least through their excellent contribution to House Music. As always this was the most wonderful event and I was truly proud of the school as they performed andsupported each other as they competed at the Watford Colosseum on Friday evening. Whilst Goddardachieved something akin to a land slide victory there is no diminishing the work, effort and endeavoursof every single participant. It has been lovely to receive lots of very positive, encouraging andcomplimentary emails, letters and cards from parents and others not only about the standard of thecompetition but the behaviour, atmosphere and comradeship being exhibited throughout, as well as theevening of the competition. In addition to thanking all the House and Music staff supporting the eventand Miss Barton for her wonderful compering on the evening, I really must thank and congratulate theMusic Captains from each of the Houses who not only prepared the various choirs and orchestras butalso write the musical arrangements that are performed. They are: Goddard Josh Hill, LydiaHollingsworth, Katie Roberts; Grant – Georgina Eagles, Jamie Davis, Sam LewisLim; Monk – OliviaKettle, Robert Ariss, Laura Snowden; Watts – Sky Christian, Abbi Katsande, Rebbeca Simpson. If thereis one event that encapsulates all that “is St George’s” then it “is” House Music.

Whilst most of the school was recovering from the rigours of House Music by having a lay in onSaturday morning, Mr Clarke, Mrs Kennedy and I could be found in the Alban Arena recruitingprospective teachers on to the Alban Federation training programme. This has proved to be a fruitfulsource of trainee recruitment in previous years and we certainly spoke to a number of good qualitycandidates who we will be inviting to visit the school and encouraging to apply for a training positioneither here at St George’s or one of the other Alban Federation schools.

This wasn’t quite the end to the week with two Chapel services on Sunday. The first, in the morning wasour annual Primary Liaison Chapel, provided to give those considering applying to St George’s anopportunity to experience one of our chapel services first hand. It was lovely to see some visiting facesin amongst our regulars, who created a warm and welcoming environment for our visitors. The secondservice was a ‘sell out’ Junior Praise service which was full to over flowing, even though it was aticketed service. Unfortunately this meant that a number of students who turned up on spec were turnedaway at the door. This reinforces the need for pupils to ensure that they get a ticket for these servicesand not to turn up without one, hoping to get in.

On Tuesday evening Miss Philpott and Mrs Priestland held the very first of our 6th Form electivesevenings where students and parents were introduced to the extended study programme we make

available to students, which includes the EPQ or Extended Project Qualification that lots of 6th Formstudents have completed to compliment with A level studies and has proved very effective at helpingstudents to secure offers at their first choice university. This isn’t of course a guarantee nor the mainreason for providing electives but a means of enabling students to broaden their educationalexperience and cultivate a joy in learning for the sheer sake of it.

Thursday evening was the first of this year’s Parent/Teacher evenings and it was great to see so manyYear 11 pupils and their parents engaged in positive conversations designed and focused onsupporting the individual’s progress, achievement and success. It occurred to me on Friday morningwhilst listening to Lewis Hamilton talking about Mercedes and the importance of the team to hissuccess as a driver, that our parents’ evenings are our equivalent of the race pit stop. A five minuteconversation with each teacher to check progress and see if some aspect of the setup needs adjustingto support the pupil achieve their full potential. Once back out on the track the teacher continues tomonitor and report on progress but ultimately it is the pupil who is in the driving seat and we must trustthem to do their part as part of the team. The average F1 team last year had a budget of £236.6m tosupport two drivers, with a tiny fraction of that budget St George’s staff support 1331 individuals, all withtheir own learning needs and personalities, and they do so with the same passion and commitment tooutstanding performance as the Mercedes team.

This first half of the Autumn term has got the year off to a great start and I am already looking forward tothe second half.

Have a good half term break.

From the Exams Office

All outcomes of reviews of marking from last Summer are now back. If any student hasn'treceived theirs they should check the junk and/or spam folders in their email, or check withus. The last original scripts that were ordered may not be back until the 14th of November, particularly if they are from AQA.

The deadline for private exam entries is the end of this term, after which fees double. We canstill accept requests for retakes from last Summer, but here the fee will already be twice thatshown on the list on the website as the original deadline passed in September.

Students in Year 11 will receive personal timetables for their December Grade PredictorExams in Friday 5 on the 4th of November any mistakes should be notified to us as soon aspossible. I will post a copy of the guidance notes on the website in due course.

PE Fixtures

Some of the exam boards are issuing certificates later this year in order to ensure that theyreflect any grade changes as a result of reviews of marking. We therefore don't anticipatethat they will be available until late November. Students still at school will be told when theyare ready for collection, and I will put a note here in the newsletter to remind students whohave left what they need to do to obtain them please keep an eye out for it if this applies toyou or someone you know. Just to mention that we still have a large number of uncollectedcertificates from 2015 and earlier. We are supposed to destroy these one year after wereceive them, and storage issues mean that we may soon have to start doing this.

Uniform

A reminder to all parents that all pupils should be in winter uniform after half term. Furthermore, some girls require need skirts as they are above the knee and this is contrary to school policy.

Timekeeping

This term we have had a spate of pupils being late into school. As a result we have opened asecond room for late detentions for three weeks running and this is unprecented. Tutors and Headsof House are monitoring this situation as it clearly cannot continue. We urge you as parents toensure that your children arrive to school on time as is the expectation of any school. We expect tosee a big improvement in this situation next half term.

Please ensure you are following or have access to the Boys & Girls twitter account for any late noticechanges to fixtures. The last few weeks have been very frustrating due to the home pitches beingunplayable and we are glad to have been able to move games to the away venues.
