Overview of Automated Benchmarking

• Automated Benchmarking (AB):– Describes a process that involves both the Portfolio Manager

user and Energy Service Provider (ESP)– Involves the submission of building and energy information and

the exchange of Ratings and related performance metrics– Requires the use of the Automated Benchmarking System (ABS)

4

ABS 1.0:Overview

• Released in September 2005, ABS 1.0 was EPA’s first generation automated benchmarking platform– Designed initially for whole building energy information

providers– Introduced two primary web services:

• Data Management Service (DMS) – for adding, updating, and deleting building and meter data

• Rating Exchange Service (RES) – for requesting the ENERGY STAR Rating and related energy and environmental performance metrics

– Majority of buildings being provided were new• Few data mappings were needed; any needed mappings were

performed manually with Portfolio Manager technical support– Approximately 60 organizations have signed up to use ABS

• 22 organizations registered as EPA-approved ESPs in Portfolio Manager

ABS 1.0:Features

• ABS 1.0 focused primarily on whole building management and ratings exchange with a small suite of accompanying tools for system testing and account management

Evolution to ABS 2.0

• Utilities were the primary driver for deciding to upgrade to ABS 2.0

• Utilities are facing several challenges towards achieving complete automation of benchmarking with version 1.0– Primarily providing meter consumption data; current services

are not “tuned” to optimally support this– Authorizing the release of data requires customer identifying

information that ABS did not support– Meter management capabilities are limited– Mapping data to an existing Portfolio Manager building is a core

part of the service model for Utilities• Capabilities to map to an existing building did not exist in ABS 1.0

ABS 2.0 Objectives

1. Deliver true “automated” benchmarking2. Eliminate system workarounds for ESPs3. Reduce the amount of data upload errors that

result in duplication and incorrect mapping4. Enable ESPs to extract data from Portfolio

Manager account (to fill gaps/troubleshoot issues)5. Provide more descriptive messaging to ESPs6. Reduce the need to engage Portfolio Manager

technical support7. Minimize disruption to existing ESPs

• ABS Account Management website (https://www.energystar.gov/istar/has)– Continue to provide online access to test clients and related

technical documentation

• Web Services Clients– All current test clients, and instructions for developing a test

client, will be updated to support new ABS 2.0 web services– Sample test data will be available to ESPs to use to help

initially test all web services

ABS 2.0 Feature Description:Test System (cont’d)

• Separate Test Environment– ABS Account Management website will allow ESP to access

the new Test Environment– All web services requests to Test Environment will need to

point to a new service with a different WSDL location– All Beta Releases will be deployed in new Test Environment

one month prior to official launch– Primary account information (username/password) can be

used to submit data to Test Environment– A copy of any building and meter data that a Portfolio

Manager user authorizes an ESP to access will be placed into that ESP’s Test space

• At any point, except during a Beta Release period, an ESP will be able to refresh the test copy with what’s currently stored in Production

Ongoing Support for ABS 1.0

• Upon release of ABS 2.0, all ABS 1.0 web services will continue to be supported until January 2009– Data Management Service (DMS)– Get Shared Facilities List– Map Facility IDs

• DMS will be made backwards compatible to support any new ratings model releases that occur between July 2008 and January 2009

Page 75: ENERGY STAR Automated Benchmarking System (ABS) 2.0 February 22, 2008 Presented by: Tom Oliver, SRA James Melzer, SRA February 22, 2008

Major Impacts of Implementing ABS 2.0

• Registration as EPA-approved ESP– ESPs will need to define the level of service they are providing

• Only one level of service is available to an ABS account

– ESPs will need to provide an automated benchmarking service contact to address questions/issues from Portfolio Manager customers

• Data Authorization and Mapping– Get Shared Facilities List and Map Facility IDs web services will

be replaced by Get Authorization Request and Send Authorization Response web services

– Mapping of IDs for any building or meter will need to happen at the same time authorization for automated benchmarking is approved

Major Impacts of Implementing ABS 2.0 (cont’d)

• Tighter controls to prevent data integrity issues– New data elements will be required when using ABS 2.0

web services to more explicitly “tell” Portfolio Manager how you want it to handle your Building and Meter management transactions

• More detailed alert messaging– Systems will need to be configured to read changes to Alerts

• Deprecation of existing web services– Get Shared Facilities List and Map Facility IDs web services

will be deprecated January 2009– DMS will be deprecated January 2009

Summary of Changes to ABS

• Data Release Authorization– Through the ABS Website, Energy Service Providers (ESPs)

will be able to specify what information their customers are required to provide (e.g., customer account number, service area ID) when authorizing the release of data to that ESP for Automated Benchmarking

– Portfolio Manager users will now be able to authorize the release of their data to an ESP and provide the ESP with information they require to verify that customer and map to their data in Portfolio Manager

– Portfolio Manager users will be able to de-authorize any ESP that they have previously authorized to provide Automated Benchmarking

Summary of Changes to ABS (cont’d)

• New Web Services– New “Get Details” services will be available to allow ESPs to

get all building and meter consumption data for which they have access

– New “Management” services will be available to allow ESPs to provide whole building or only meter consumption information for multiple buildings across multiple Portfolio Manager accounts in a single transaction

Summary of Changes to ABS (cont’d)

• Error Prevention and Correction– New services for uploading and modifying building or energy

data will now require an ESP to specify whether their submission is intended to upload new data or modify data that currently exists in Portfolio Manager

– New web-based troubleshooting tools will be available to allow an ESP to remove duplicates or correct any mapping errors

– New web-based monitoring area will allow ESPs to view a log of their automated benchmarking activities

Summary of Changes to ABS (cont’d)

• New Release process– ESPs will now be provided access to new schemas three

months before a major release

– ESPs will now be provided access to a Beta version of any new or modified web services, within the ABS website, one month prior to their official launch

– The current Data Management Service (DMS), which most ESPs are using today will continue to be supported until January 2009
