Nonrenewable Energy
• Fossil Fuels
- Coal
- Oil and Natural Gas
• Enrichable Uranium

![Page 3: Energy Project](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052619/555709cdd8b42a4a418b4fb0/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Coal
• Coal is mined• Sedimentary Rock• Formed from
- Underground
- Dead organic mater• Coal is burned in
factories to heat water that turns electric turbines.
![Page 4: Energy Project](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052619/555709cdd8b42a4a418b4fb0/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Oil
• Oil is found through drilling
• It is used for many things:
• Burned like coal in power plants
• Refined to produce gasoline which is used in motor vehicles
![Page 5: Energy Project](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052619/555709cdd8b42a4a418b4fb0/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Natural Gas
• Collected from natural gas wells
• Burned to turn turbines - Heat water and produce steam- Natural Gas/ Steam Combination Generator
• Used in Fuel Cells
![Page 6: Energy Project](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052619/555709cdd8b42a4a418b4fb0/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Nuclear
• The uranium used is mined or milled before being processed
• After processing, pellets are placed into rods which are placed into bundles.
• Uranium bundles are used in Fission reactions- Fission; Splitting of uranium-235 atom by catching a free neutron
• Fusion- Two atoms collide to form one atom
![Page 7: Energy Project](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052619/555709cdd8b42a4a418b4fb0/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Incineration
• Trash and waste are burned
• Heat produced is used to heat water
• The water changes to steam and turns turbines to generate electricity
![Page 8: Energy Project](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052619/555709cdd8b42a4a418b4fb0/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Inexhaustible Energy
• Wind
• Solar
• Hydroelectric
• Geothermic
• Wave Energy

![Page 9: Energy Project](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052619/555709cdd8b42a4a418b4fb0/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Wind
• Windmills have blades that are pushed by wind
• These blades are connected to a turbine. When the blades spin, the turbine generates electricity.

Solar
• Converted in two different ways:
- Sunlight is redirected to a building to heat water…etc
- Sunlight is absorbed directly through solar cells

Geothermic
• Heat from inside of Earth
- Tapped• May be used to heat
or cool homes• Heat used to
produce steam and turn turbineshttp://

![Page 12: Energy Project](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052619/555709cdd8b42a4a418b4fb0/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Wave Energy
• Waves are harnessed to produce electricity
• Direct Method
- Waves move a special turbine up and down
• New Method
- Described in picturehttp://www.reuk.co.uk/OtherImages/islaywave.gif
![Page 13: Energy Project](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052619/555709cdd8b42a4a418b4fb0/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
