CO2-neutral power generation from biomass and waste.

Everyone is talking about “renewable energy sources”. After all, the growing worldwide

demand for energy needs to be resolved, and the focus is increasingly on factors such as

safe energy usage and environmental protection.

Biomass is one of the renewable energies and offers CO2-neutral power generation, as

does waste incineration. It can be solid, liquid or gaseous. The use of solid biomass (dry

or dried material such as plants and plant parts, wood chips, wood pellets, grains, straw,

etc.) offers particular advantages because of its availability and base load capability.

Biomass power plants are operated both in industry and in the energy sector. They are

divided into power plants that burn the biomass and those that operate on the basis

of biomass gasification. Both types of power generation have one thing in common:

they are highly efficient. And this efficiency is further increased by the additional use

of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology.

Generating electricity and heat by biomass and waste combustion.

In the classic steam turbine process, biomass such as bark, wood chips, sawdust or waste material is burned.

The resultant steam is released and drives a generator to produce electricity. Co-firing in a fossil-fuelled power

plant is also possible. The heat generated can be used additionally as process heat or for district heating (com-

bined cycle). Depending on the feedstock used as fuel, temperatures up to 540 °C can be reached.

KSB supplies reliable and efficient pumps for handling feed water and condensate and for district heating, as

well as auxiliary pumps for a variety of processes.

Applications6

Generating electricity and heat by thermo-chemical biomass gasification.In the thermo-chemical gasification process, biomass is subjected to heat and converted into a combustible gas

as completely as possible. The gas generated this way often contains impurities that need to be removed before

it is used. The cleaned product gas can then be converted into energy and heat. During combustion, the high

temperatures of the exhaust gases can be used additionally for district heating. Co-firing in fossil-fuelled

power plants is also possible.

ORC systems can be integrated to increase efficiency. Instead of water, these use an organic working fluid that

vaporises at a low boiling point and drives a turbine.

KSB supplies time-proven pumps for product gas scrubbing, for the thermal oil cycle, for district heating and

for pumping the organic fluid in the Organic Rankine Cycle.

Horizontal, long-coupled, single-stage volute casing pump (pump

size 125– 500 with two stages) with ratings and main dimensions

to EN 733, in back pull-out design, with replaceable shaft sleeves /

shaft protecting sleeves and casing wear rings. ATEX-compliant

version available.

Applications:

Spray irrigation, irrigation, drainage, district heating, water supply

systems, heating and air-conditioning systems, condensate transport,

swimming pools, fire-fighting systems, handling of hot water, cooling

water, fire-fighting water, oil, brine, drinking water, brackish water,
