    Callide Oxyfuel Project

    AustraliaClientCallide Oxyfuel Services Pty Ltd

This world rst, clean coal project

involves retrotting one of the existing

30 megawatt units at Callide A PowerStation to enable oxyfuel combustion andcarbon dioxide capture. The project has thepotential to demonstrate how existing coalred power stations could be adapted to

produce almost zero emissions electricity.Aurecon provided owners engineerservices, including a site team, during theconstruction phase.

The project was implemented using amulticontract project delivery approachwith ve different main contractors. The

site work included retrotting the existing

boiler, constructing two new oxygenproduction plants and carbon dioxidecapture facilities, as well as various balanceof plant modications. Aurecon provided

a team of experienced personnel to assistthe client to implement the multiplecontracts and various interfaces.

Our expertise and industry knowledge have beenbuilt on projects around the globe, allowing our

teams to develop detailed localised knowledgeofthe 80 plus countries in which we have worked.

    High Voltage Reticulation UpgradeAustraliaClientQAL

    QALs Gladstone renery has been

operating since 1967 and is one of thelargest alumina reneries in the world. The renerys 11 kiloVolt distribution

network is one of Queenslands largestand most complex for an industrial plant. This project involved converting the ageingnetwork to a new distribution arrangementthat will meet QALs needs for safety inoperation, security of supply and scope for

    future expansion.

Aurecon undertook the initial optionsanalysis and feasibility studies for theproject and delivered the denitive

engineering phase, project implementationand successful handover. Aurecon workedclosely with QAL to develop the preferredsolution, which included a simplied

    11 kiloVolt network arrangement.

New switchboards enabled the pairingof incoming transformers to addressfault levels and security issues, as wellas interconnection with QALs onsitegeneration. The main substation wasalso linked to the newer substation.

    Transmission Lines and Substations

    LibyaClientGeneral Electric Company ofLibya (GECOL)

Aurecon, in association with Libyanconsulting company ACESCo, wasappointed to provide services for electricalpower supply construction projects inseveral locations in Libya, inclusive ofan overhead transmission line in theSahara desert.

The project consisted of a 175 kilometre220 kiloVolt coastal power line, a

105 kilometre 220 kiloVolt inland powerline and three (220, 66 and 30 kiloVolt) gas

    insulated switchgear stepdown substations.

Aurecon adopted a hands-on projectmanagement approach to deliver newelectrical infrastructure, providing a broadrange of project management, engineeringand technical services. Aurecon alsoprovided a group of Libyan engineers withclassroom training on site managementsystems, skills training for site supervisionand the construction principles of overheadline and substation construction.

    Nam Theun 2 Hydroelectric Project

    LaosClientNam Theun 2 Power Company

The hydropower project involvedconstruction of a 1 070 megawatthydroelectric power station in the NamTheun River a trans-basin scheme, diverting water from the Nam Theun Rivercatchment into the Xe Bang Fai Riversystem, producing 348 metres of net headto drive the generating units. Aurecon wasengaged to undertake tender, preliminaryand detailed design and documentation ofthe downstream channel works.

Aurecon applied a programme ofnumerical modelling (one dimensional, two dimensional and computation uid

dynamics) and physical model testingto facilitate the hydraulic design ofthe channel, rock protection, hydraulicstructures and river conuences.

The modelling was also used to investigateair entrainment and ensure that waterquality criteria would be satised.

Aurecons integrated team of hydraulicspecialists, structural and civil designers, geotechnical engineers and geologists

worked with geomorphologists andinternational dam experts to deliver aninnovative, effective design for the project.

    P40 Gas Turbine Plant

New ZealandClient Genesis Energy Pty Ltd

Commissioned as owners engineer andproject manager, Aurecon awarded sixcontracts in a multicontract approach tocomplete the installation of the new40 megawatt gas turbine power plant againsta tight timeframe. We also utilised specialistsections within Aurecon for technicalengineering and project managementservices to minimise the project duration.

A dual fuel General Electric LM6000 PC

SPRINT gas turbine that operates above40 per cent efciency and produces48 megawatt at ISO conditions was installed. To maximise safety and accessibility tothe gas turbine, electrical and mechanicalservices were located inground, includingover 500 metres of three 220 kiloVolt

cables between the main transformer andthe switchyard.

To facilitate the potential relocation of thegas turbine in the future, a two HV winding

(220 kiloVolt and 110 kiloVolt) transformer

was used. Additionally, Aurecon designed thelayout and services with provision to install

a second similar gas turbine plant of eitheropen cycle or combined cycle conguration

    adjacent to the present site.
