Endocrine and Integumentary SystemsSESSION 39

Objectives

Describe the components of the integumentary system

Describe the locations and major hormones associated with the essential glands of the endocrine system

Analyze the relationship between the endocrine system and nervous system

Hormones: Mechanism of Action

Target cells

Receptors

Endocrine Glands Pituitary Gland

“Master Gland”

Growth Hormone, prolactin, adrenocorticotropic hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, oxytocin, antidiuretic hormone

Pineal Gland Melatonin

Thyroid Hormones involved in metabolism

Thymus Hormones released during puberty, mainly involved in immunity

Endocrine Glands

Pancreas Insulin, blood sugar control

Adrenal Adrenaline (epinephrine), blood sugar control

Testes Testosterone

Ovaries Estrogen and progesterone

Locations

1. Pineal

2. Pituitary

3. Thyroid

4. Thymus

5. Adrenals

6. Pancreas (Shown Wrong!)

7. Ovary

8. Teste

Research Hormone Functions

5 minutes – prepare for a brief presentation. What does it do? Where is it found? What is an interesting piece of information about this hormone?

Assign each group member a number

I will randomly select someone in your group to present your hormone

Make sure you’re ready!

1. growth hormone

2. prolactin

3. adrenocorticotropic hormone

4. thyroid-stimulating hormone

5. luteinizing hormone

6. follicle-stimulating hormone

7. oxytocin

8. antidiuretic hormone

9. adrenaline

10. testosterone

11. estrogen

12. progesterone

Hormone Functions

1. growth hormone – somatotropin, increases glucose & fatty acids, ant. pituitary

2. Prolactin – pituitary, milk production, pancreatic dev. >300 functions

3. adrenocorticotropic hormone – ant. Pituitary, stress inflammation or immune,

4. thyroid-stimulating hormone – pituitary, feedback to supply thyroid hormones, maintain metabolism

5. luteinizing hormone – gonadotropin (stimulates gonads), ant. Pituitary,

6. follicle-stimulating hormone – ant. Pituitary, growth & reproductive processes, tests for infertility

7. Oxytocin – hypothalamus, “bonding”, positive feedback for labor, destroyed in GI tract

8. antidiuretic hormone – prevents urination, descreases fluid release, electrolyte regulation, pituitary (vasopressin similar)

9. Adrenaline – (epinephrine), released by sympathetic NS, increases HR, vasoconstrictor, bronchodilator

10. Testosterone – steroid, testes or ovaries, anabolic effects, androgenic effects

11. Estrogen – ovaries, liver, adrenal glands, breasts, increases fat storage, reproductive regulation, bone formation

12. progesterone

Wednesday

After tag test (11:15), lab will be open for checking answers and review

Lecture will be optional and informal for review only

Please email me topics that you’d like to go over Wednesday

Please bring questions that you have

I will stop answering emails Sunday evening at 8pm

If I don’t see you Wednesday, see you Monday at 11:30am for the Final Exam!
