For the moment only a shadowy teaser rendering has been released as the only real information about the car. ‘‘The Sport Sedan Con- cept previews a new ener- getic design direction that amplifies Nissan’s legend- ary approach of applying sports car principles to a sedan,’’ the accompanying press statement says some- what unhelpfully. However, with the ageing Maxima sedan due for a makeover soon, the concept could be a pointer to styling for its coming facelift. Particularly since there’s some resemblance to the Nissan Maxima concept rendering teased at the Nissan 360 overview event — especially the sweptback headlight design. Along with the trapezoid grille on the Sports Sedan Concept, we could be seeing the birth of a new family face for the Nissan line-up. However, anything of a true performance nature is unlikely to make it on to the mild-mannered Maxima sedan in the showroom. Nissan is also taking the IDx Freeflow and IDx Nismo concepts from Nov- ember’s Tokyo motor show for a second airing at Detroit, suggesting even stronger moves towards gauging the response for a possible production plan. And so it goes. Another auto- mobile icon fades from view because of 21st-century safety regulations. After 64 years of production, the final Volkswagen Kombi rolled off the production line last week - this one in Brazil where the more relaxed safety regulations allowed the Kombi to continue, and where they have been built for the past 56 years. And it travelled a long way. The vehicle that came to symbolise the counter-culture around the globe started out as an idea on paper for the war-ravaged VW to make some much-needed money. The Kombi is now one of the few cars in the pantheon of true classics. More than any other automobile, the VW Kombi is an enduring image of the flower-power hippie era in the 1960s and of the wider surfing culture across the world. Cheap, plentiful and able to carry big loads with ease it was an ideal vehicle for a newly mobile, Baby Boomer generation. The first series Kombi was re- leased for sale in 1950, after its appearance at the November 1949 Geneva Motor Show. Its heritage goes back to when the British Army occupied and ran the VW factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, after the end of WWII. There are various versions of how the Kombi came to be, but the main facts are agreed. Needing a vehicle to move parts around the VW factory, the army cobbled together a strengthened Beetle chassis, surrounded it with utilitarian panels and created a small truck. In 1947 a Dutch VW dealer, Ben Pons, saw these little trucks while visiting to the factory. He thought that with some im- proved body panels it would make a cheap, sturdy and light truck to be used in the rebuilding of the war- torn Europe. He sketched a design for VW managers and went back to Holland. Heinz Nordhoff, who was ex-Opel, and been installed by the army to run VW, took up this idea and made it happen. The rest of the story is legend. Kombis have a strong fan base and devotes of the vehicle have their own language to describe the ‘‘buses’’. Those built between 1950 and 1967, are known as split-window buses or ‘‘splitties’’ because of the divided windscreen. Those built after 1967 have a one- piece screen and are known as the bay window Kombis. Prices for early models continue to rise, across the world. In Australia models from the 1950s can run to $45,000 and above, particularly the barn-door versions in good condition. So if you are in the market for a real classic, buy a Kombi now. The price will only rise. Plan may be Supra The new Ft Hs concept could succeed the Toyota Supra Karla Pincott MANUFACTURERS will develop architecture to build different cars for each brand. Fans of the long-gone and much-mourned Toyota Supra - and those hoping to see a successor after its 11-year absence - can per- haps take heart in news that Toyota and BMW have confirmed a deal to jointly produce a new sports car platform. BMW development chief Herbert Diess told Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung news- paper the architecture would spawn two new cars. ‘‘We have agreed on a joint architecture for a sports car,’’ Mr Diess said, however declining to reveal more details about the platform. Toyota has previously partnered with Subaru to produce the wildly success- ful Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ, but while they are near- clones, it seems the Toyota/ BMW collaboration will fo- cus on ensuring the two resultant cars are strongly differentiated. ‘‘What is important is that there will be two different vehicles that are authentic to the two brands,’’ Mr Diess said. The announcement is not unexpected, following the two brands making an agreement in mid-2012 to collaborate on a range of technology - including weight-saving strategies and lithium-air batteries - and also consider the poten- tial for a medium-sized sports car platform. Toyota is tipped to be unveiling a sports concept that could point to a Supra successor at the Detroit motor show in a couple of weeks, so it’s possible that a production vehicle seeded from the show car could include the BMW collaboration. However the Toyota end of the joint development could also end up wearing a Lexus badge. And Toyota is not the only Japanese carmaker part- nering with a European brand for a sports car. As we’ve reported pre- viously, Mazda is collaborat- ing with Italy’s Alfa Romeo on a platform that will be the basis for both the next Mazda MX-5 and Alfa Spider. The Kombi is now one of the fewcars in the pantheon of true classics.

More than any other automobile, the VW Kombi is an enduringimage of the flower-power hippieera in the 1960s and of the widersurfing culture across the world.
