CENTRE D’ART CONTEMPORAINPHOTOGRAPHIQUE NIORT

VILLA PÉROCHON

Based in the former residence of writer Ernest Pérochon (Goncourt Literary Prizewinner in 1920), in the town centre of Niort, a short walk from the station andclose to the Agesci Museum, the gallery of the Villa Pérochon provides 100 linearmetre of wall space. It is accessed through an extensive high-walled garden of1000 square metres, which itself amounts to a true open air gallery. As permanent space for the exhibition of photographic imagery, the Villa Pérochonis to base its schedule around contemporary photography with the emphasison emerging artists. Two events punctuate this annual programme:

• Every year in the spring, the Encoun-ters of Young International Photographybring together, for the first two weeks inApril, eight young international artists in acreative residency, accompanied by a leadingfigure in international photography. Thisyear Klavdij Sluban is the guest of honourfor this residency, which presents a richprogramme of exhibitions. Works createdover the years have helped establish a collec-tion now comprising some 2,000 pieces.

• Every summer, it is Summer at theVilla, where this year we are presenting workcreated in Niort by Vincent Rosenblatt andto be shown in three parts at the Villa Péro-chon, the Pilori visual arts space and theoutdoor theatre.

To highlight our support for youngartists, 2015 will be a year of creation with the

works of the Encounters of Young Internatio-nal Photography, that of Vincent Rosenblattand finally in the autumn, with the presen-tation of Carte du Tendre by Alexandra Pouzet, created in Poitou-Charentes.

With a view to being open to as widean audience as possible, entrance to all theexhibitions is free. Guided visits can bearranged and training sessions in greaterawareness and understanding of the imageare provided for schools, community centres, hospital departments and others.

In keeping with this approach, a broadprogramme of training sessions is providedfor all from beginners to advanced level inphotographic techniques and reading andanalysis of the image.

2 21st Encounters of Young International Photography

At the time of writing these lines, January 7, 2015, fanaticism andobscurantism have hit the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo in Paris. To surprise and so… to questionTo open and so... to discover!Never before have these words that are the basis of our project mademore sense. We are more pleased than ever to offer a programme in whichapproaches are multiple and where the spirit of openness prevails, enabling the discovery of the other. Humbly, we continue to seek toarouse curiosity, to provide some keys for understanding of theworld, to keep up contact, to follow your curiosity, but also to stimu-late or provoke it.So come and discover this rich 2015 programme, in which the mostdiverse approaches and cultures come together in the fullest lightand in the shade of no chapel.

PATRICK DELAT

This year under the leadership of Klavdij Sluban, the creative residency bringing togethereight international photographers starts on April 3, with presentation of the fruits ofthese encounters on April 18.You will already have had the pleasure of seeing the works on the basis of which theseartists were selected at the Grappelli Pavilion as of March 7.

This comes from both our network of artistsalready invited to previous editions of the Encounters of Young International Photography– a way of keeping you informed of their development – as well as resulting from thediscoveries we have made during portfolio reviews and meetings organised by majorfestivals (such as the Rencontres d'Arles, Voies Off and Manifesto). This year, eight locations (both public and private) are hosting exhibitions, thus furtherenhancing the artistic tour we propose around the town:

• 14 international artists• 8 exhibition sites

a programme to appeal to all:• meetings with artists,• guided tours, • workshops,• round table,• evening events, etc.

Winner of the European Publishers Award for Photography 2009, of the Leica Prize(2004) and of the Niépce Prize (2000), main French prize in photography, KlavdijSluban is a French photographer of Slovenian origin born in Paris in 1963. He develops a rigorous and coherent body of work, making him one of the mostinteresting photographers of his generation. Often tinted with literary references, his numerous photographic trips deal with issues outside immediate and sensa-tional current affairs. His photographic expeditions, such as those in the ChinaSea, the Caribbean, the Balkans, Russia, China, the Kerguelen Islands (first artisticmission in Antarctica) can be seen in his case as a meeting between the reality ofthe moment and the inner feeling of the itinerant photographer. His deep blacksand silhouettes shot against the light give his photographic style a straightnessand exactness free of any didacticism or exoticism.Since 1995, Klavdij Sluban, when he is not travelling, conducts photographic works-hops with young detainees in prison. This commitment, which began in France(Fleury-Merogis) with the encouragement of Henri Cartier Bresson, Marc Riboudand William Klein, was followed up in the disciplinary camps of Eastern Europeancountries, the former Yugoslavia (Slovenia, Serbia) and in the former Soviet Union(Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Latvia, Russia), including places of confinement inMoscow and St. Petersburg, and more recently in Central America. Familiar withsuch detention centres and in collaboration with those who inhabit them, Slubanreveals through his images the problematic aspects of enclosed spaces and constrai-ned horizons and makes us feel the fractures of a confinement that echoes theinternalisation of perceptions.

IDA JAKOBSwww.idajakobs.fr

I am 36 and I had always made images without evershowing them. After working ten years in commu-nications for the theatre, I finally decided to take thebull by the horns. I participated in a workshop ledby Pierre Barbot in Toulouse last year. And in oneyear I gained ten lives! Coming out with a specialmention from the jury, I was invited to present myseries “La Vie Devant Soi” ("Your Life ahead of You")as the selected favourite at the ManifestO festivalin September. I have been continuing this since.

I think I seek both to show some blunt truths, thosethings people prefer to hide (from themselves) toavoid having to confront them; and at the sametime, perhaps naively, to save people from what theymay seem to the world ... I want an escape fromformatting, hypocritical conventions, mandatoryrules. Someone said, "It is not because we do nothave wings that we cannot fly", so I try.

A family of women: my grand-mother, sister, my mother andmyself. A small theatre. Agame, which sometimes is notso funny. Family stories.Motherhood. Death. Forget-ting. The child that I am. Thefigure of the mother. Frommother to daughter, and thenloss too. A lack. Absence. Pain.Finding identity through anaction. A genesis. Regressing, transgressing, getting to theessence.Moving from reality to fictionto invent a family mythology, like my influences, from GarciaMarquez to Guibert.Baring oneself.

Truth Leem is 29 years old and from South Korea.

About three months after I was born, my sister died. And I had to be sent to different people’s homesfor a while because my mother was emotionallyunable to take care of me. I believe that I can stillremember the day I was sent to the home of oneof my uncles. I was afraid of being abandoned. This is my first memory of my life. For me, taking photographs is a process of mour-ning. I started taking pictures to escape from floods, but now I hold my breath and go deeper into thefloods with my camera. Because this is the onlything I can do.

As a filmmaker and director for her first shortfilms in Shanghai, she felt the need to use photo-graphy to capture images of a world very differentfrom what she knew. Her love for narrative cinemaand photography has provided her with two verydifferent but complementary canvases on whichto capture the stories around her.

I was born in Cagliari, Sardinia, in 1987. After twoyears of studying Political Science at the Universityof Rome, I got a degree in philosophy at the Univer-sity of Trient. I began photography in 2009, partici-pating in various workshops in Italy, which led meto seek professional training. Admitted to the Natio-nal School of Photography in Arles in 2012, I amcurrently completing my third year of studies. For me, art provides a privileged access to the world,an opening that makes it possible to convey the rela-tionship between my inner self and the world. Theperceptual and sensory experience that we have ofphenomena opens spaces that are both elusive andvertiginous. It is in these spaces that I try to placemyself in seeking to express the encounter with theplaces and people who are drawn there. In my prac-tice, photography is at times accompanied by othermedia such as sound or video, different and comple-mentary means of access that are mixed togetherto render as well as possible the interconnectionsbetween subjectivity, otherness and landscape.

Fragment/ Impressions du monde sensible

Mélania Avanzato was born in 1978 on theshores of the Mediterranean to uprootedparents, a legacy that still floats gently betweenher images. She quickly found in photographya way of connecting to the world. After studyinghistory and photography, she decided toconstruct her life in images, and now works foran agency, for the press, and also as an indepen-dent photographer, continuously developing awork of meticulous personal archiving, an inven-tory of the dreamed-of places of a generation.

The series Fragments // Impressions du MondeSensible, is composed of time capsules, withtime and space defined by the constraints ofthe frame. These images are parentheses, frag-ments extracted from the fields of the visible, separated from all else. Taken out of the real, they can only be isolated pieces, filled by itsabsence. The worlds of the senses are unfoldedbetween the images, outside of them, like phan-tom members or mutants. The vast world slipsthrough these infinitesimal extracts that sacri-fice the reality they record, distancing theirsubjects in order to sanctify them.

The photographs, in their enclosed space, areislands whose entire invisible territory is to bereconstructed, to be imagined, having beenextracted from subterranean worlds, broughtto light, and are put forward for what they are, fragments of suspended wandering.

Photography, by its nature, has the reality ofsubstances alone, extracted from a world itcannot fully bear witness to, but it is this imper-fection, this out-of-shot aspect, which leaveseverything up to the viewer, in feeling, light, and a whole world to invent.

Sabine Delcour knows Niort. She participatedin the 1998 European Photographic Encounters, now become the Encounters of Young Interna-tional Photography. She was already exploringthe spirit of landscape, and she still now lovesalways to take time to immerse herself in terri-tories whose landscapes fascinate her.

Still using a carefully chosen view camera, sheis here to present under the title of “InhabitedLandscapes”, two series, Bas Reliefs and Chemi-nements, an invitation to contemplation andquestioning of our relationship to nature.

There is no documentary dimension in this work.Without any doubt, it is indeed a work of fiction, the creation of a mental space, suggested by tech-nique, using the tilt and shift movements inhe-rent to the view camera. The eye’s movementaround the image is disturbed by the surprisingcombination of sharp and blurred zones. In factit takes a few moments for the viewer to adjustto the artist’s vision. But once this is done, theimage comes together, enabling the momentarypresence of the artist to be perceived throughthese landscapes.

Charlie Jouvet, born in 1973, is a French artistliving in Berlin. Since graduating from the Natio-nal School of Photography in Arles in 1997, hehas worked on personal projects that convey asense of time by seeking to reconcile and tobring out the resonations between differenttimes in modern history (Geheimnisträger,Februar, Words after Phnom Penh). He hastaught at Arles and currently teaches at theUniversity of Paris. His work has been exhibitedin various countries (Germany, England, Cambo-dia, France, Ireland, Poland and Switzerland).

Words after Phnom Penh is a work rooted in theevents that occurred in Cambodia in the 1970s.When taking over the city of Phnom Penh onApril 17, 1975, the Khmer Rouge forced the inha-bitants into exile in the countryside, leaving thecapital of the country virtually empty for almostfour years.

Forty years later, a viewerwanders around the cityand still feels the loss, thePhnom Penh of today stillremaining empty, despite allthe traces of life to be foundthere. The people seem tohave left the city forever.

Le Corps VécuMarlous Van der Sloot’s images invite us to enteran immaterial world, the world of feelings andemotions, and seek to probe the human soul. Itwould probably seem to the artist that modernsociety, through excessive rationalisation, hascreated the conditions of a rupture with theimmediacy of the real.

Playing on metaphor with an amazing sense ofpoetry, Marlous Van der Sloot’s photographslead us into a world of refined meanings, whereelements collide to resonate in each of us, inthe manner of primordial primitive images. Assi-gning incongruous postures and gestures tothe human figure, her images provoke a feelingof strangeness.

Le Carré Amelot in LaRochelle and the Carré d’art of Chartres in Brittany have now madeit possible for her to present this new series created during photo-graphic workshops that she carried out in prisons.

She gets beyond the numerous doors, driven by the desire "todiscover what is not seen and to learn, to shatter illusions andovercome fears."Of her experience, she says little, other than that "coming out onthe last day, I was convinced that these men were no more mons-trous than other people" ...but undoubtedly in great suffering.
