Workplace Safety A Priority From Day One

arlier this year, a memorandum released by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) declared the administration would put a stronger emphasis on workplace safety for temporary workers. Since this

announcement, statistics have shown the number of inspections has doubled from the previous year. With this increased focus on safety for temporary workers, it’s important for businesses to understand how temporary staffing agencies can be a crucial element for avoiding accidents on the job site.

Safety From the Start“The single most important asset for any business is its employees,” says Encore

Risk Manager Dennis Collins. “At Encore, our job is to find the best sort of people for the client’s specific needs.” During the application and interview process, employee candidates take a series of assessments to evaluate characteristics such as a person’s ability to follow directions, risk tolerance levels, teamwork tendencies and so forth. “These processes filter out candidates who may not be suited for certain jobs,” Col-lins says. “Since we’ve implemented additional screening, we have seen a 30 percent drop in work-related injuries, and have gone six months without a single first- or

With Temps This Good, We Use Them in Our Own Offices E

ncore Staffing Services doesn’t just find the best temporary workers; they use

them to assist in their own offices! We wouldn’t send any worker out

in the workforce that we wouldn’t use ourselves. Annette Mullane is a great example of that promise.

Armed with a clerical and

workforce planning background, Mullane’s experience made her an ideal prospect for temporary work.

“I had somewhat retired, but I noticed Encore’s (Independence, Mo.) office while my husband and I were out shopping and I thought, ‘What a great way to stay active,’ so I made a point to apply.” As luck would have it, shortly after her interview an Encore employee needed to be out of the office and Mullane came to mind. “I went right in and got to work.”

Mullane has been a clerical temp with Encore for several years. “The great thing about Encore is they really got to know me. They call me for jobs they know will suit me best, which I really appreciate.” When

she’s working at the Encore office, Mullane takes phone calls, prepares paperwork for potential hires and often conducts preliminary inter-views and computer testing.

“Having sat in that same chair, I get a good read on the people who come in looking for work,” says Mullane. “Encore Staffing Services places a very high value on dependability. I tell every person who walks in that if they’re sincerely interested in work, they need to call every day and make themselves known. Encore is only interested in reliable people, who really want to work.”

second-day on-the-job injury. Now, injuries during the first week of employment are rare.”

Expert AdviceScreening potential employees is just one proactive

measure; it’s equally important for employers to be clear about their expectations for temporary workers. “The screening process takes care of steps one and two – the temp is suited for the position and is ready to work,” says Collins. “Step three is clear instruction provided on-site by the client about what the employee should and shouldn’t do on the job.” Your business may con-sider creating a packet of information clearly listing the responsibilities of each temporary employee, along with an outline of what they should do if an injury occurs.

For interested employers, Encore also offers safety-counseling services. “We have been asked to review a client’s existing policies and procedures; we have consul-ted with clients about how they can efficiently add temp workers. It’s beneficial for everyone involved,” Collins explains. “The rules and requirements are changing all the time and that’s my job, to know what they are.” n

Temporary Staffing Fits the Mold for Monoflo International

he Monoflo International factory location in Ottawa, Kan., is grow-ing. “We’ve added machines since we started and we’re planning on adding more,” says George Meyer, plant manager. The company uses

injection molding and welding technology to create reusable transport packag-ing such as pallets, crates, dollies and a variety of other containers. Using tempo-rary staff from Encore ensures this Monoflo factory location never has to worry about keeping workers on its growing fleet of machines.

“The temps go right to work. They mind the machines and keep everything moving along,” says Meyer. The ma-chines at the Ottawa location run 24/7 to meet the high demand for its products. Having dependable workers is important to the company. More than that, they need people who are ready to work. “The workers go through the whole rota-tion. It takes about a week to learn it all,” says Meyer.

When asked about the benefits of working with Encore Staffing Services, Meyer noted that “When I needed somebody quick, they came through,” and mentioned that the company had hired several temps for full-time positions. “I’ve worked with other staffing agencies in the past, and I would definitely recommend Encore.”

George Meyer, on-site plant manager at Monoflo, explains operations to Encore account manager Denver Williams.

Staffing Services as Strategic Partners

increasing your production with immediacy. You won’t have to worry about time or work lost during replace-ment interview processes or a disrup-tion in the flow of your operations.

Often, there’s little need to exten-sively train contingent workers. Many staffing companies use customized screening tools, like Encore’s suite of testing tools, to provide clients with the added benefit of temporary workers highly accomplished in skills such as coordination or language skills, which ensures your company gets the best worker for the job.

The demand for contingent workers is growing due to economic changes such as healthcare reform. Many companies are maintaining their core workforce and utilizing contingency workers as demand calls for extra help. The American Staffing Association’s (ASA) quarterly Employment and Sales Survey found that “U.S. staffing com-panies employed an average of 2.86 million temporary and contract work-ers per day in the first quarter of 2013, up 2.9 percent from the same period last year.” These numbers are expected to continue to rise.

Stay ahead of the curve by upholding a strong working relationship with a staffing company. You’ll be better able to accurately plan or budget for the natu-ral ebb and flow of your business. n

Coordinator Works Hard to Find Hard Workersarlene Eiskina appreciates a job well done. “It’s very gratifying to work with a client and watch their company grow,” Darlene says. “I worked with one client for nearly

10 years, and it’s nice seeing the huge number of employees they hired from us progress and move up within the company to positions of super-vision and beyond.”

Darlene, a Staffing Coordinator III, has been with Encore since September 2003. Prior to working at Encore, she gained a background in third-party administration for a company in Overland Park, Kan. At Encore, Darlene wears many hats. She inter-

views and tests applicants, handles client issues, fills orders, assists with payroll and even helps out with the company’s marketing.

“A big part of my job,“ Darlene explains, “is finding out what type of job the applicant is looking for. We need to know about their experience, their location and their pay range requirements. We’re honest with our workers about what we can do to help them. If what they’re looking for is outside of what we can offer, we refer them to different offices or a different division of the company.“

Placing temporary workers at jobs where they’re positioned to succeed is mutually beneficial for both the clients and the work-ers. Which is not to say there aren’t the occasional challenges.

“We were given a heads up from a client that they would soon need about 36 temps in place to run a job Monday through Fri-day in two eight-hour shifts for approximately two weeks, which we prepared for. However, when it was all said and done, the client ended up needing to run this project 24/7, for 11 weeks and at the peak, using over 110 temps per day on one line.” The hard work paid off and the client was grateful.

“My job can be very stressful but the phone calls from the cli-ents expressing their pleasure with the labor we provided makes me forget all the stress. Well, not completely but it sure helps,” Darlene laughs.

She finds even more relaxation camping, fishing, bowling, going to happy hours with co-workers and spending time with her family and friends. n
