Eye Deep in Hell: Life and Death in the Trenches Eric Rivet, Curator of Collections and Exhibits

Alexis Rockman: The Great Lakes Cycle Megan Lykins Reich, MOCA Deputy Director

The Great Lakes Cycle is the most ambitious body of work to date by renowned New York-based painter Alexis Rockman. The exhibition celebrates the natural majesty and global importance of the Great Lakes while exploring how they are threatened by factors such as climate change, globalization, invasive species, mass agriculture and urban sprawl. It includes five new, monumentally scaled paintings that combine diverse subjects and histories to create new visions of the Great Lakes.

Also on view are a suite of surreal, large-scale watercolors and a constellation of flora and fauna “field drawings” made by the artist using dirt and soil mixtures from various locations. On view at the same time is An Evening With Queen White by young, LA-based artist Martine Syms. This four-channel immersive video installation presents a fictional character based on Syms' mother, aunt, herself and Maxine Powell — the famed Motown director of etiquette. Queen White delivers a monologue about how to perform in a faux Motown-era recording studio in this exploration of how identity is performed, authored and presented in the media, particularly in music, films and television.

Searching for Ancient Fossil Remains of our AncestorsYohannes Haile-Selassie, Ph.D., Curator of Physical Anthropology

We are the only survivors of a long evolutionary journey of the human lineage that started several million years ago: When and where did we start? Only ancient fossils can answer this fundamental question. Fossils tell us the story of where we came from and on what journey our primordial ancestors traveled. Yohannes Haile-Selassie is a paleoanthropologist who searches for and studies fossil remains of ancient human ancestors. He will talk about where he travels in search of the fossils and what we know based on fossil evidence thus far. After the talk, we will take a short behind-the-scenes tour to the Physical Anthropology department and laboratory, where Haile-Selassie conducts his research.
