Santiago Cortés Burns
HEAD OF THE SAFETY, QUALITY AND
ENVIRONMENT DIVISION
Mr Cortés has an aeronautical engineering degree from the
Polytechnic University of Madrid and did his final-year project at the
University of Manchester.
He joined the air navigation area of Aena in 2006 to work in the
international sphere, being responsible for several joint activities with
EUROCONTROL and the European Commission. He previously
worked at Ineco on managing participation in European programmes
and SESAR.
He has had responsibilities associated to improving the ENAIRE
integrated management system, including the safety, security, quality
and environment spheres since 2013 and is currently the head of the
Safety, Quality and Environment Division.

As a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic of 2020,
aviation had to face unprecedented crisis
worldwide.
In the Air Traffic Management Sector, the
airspace remained open, proving that despite
the uncertainty and impact within our existing
systems, human performance remained
balanced, designed, and crucially, able to
adjust.
