enabling data infrastructure return on innovation – the other roi
DESCRIPTION
Kick off Key Note from SNIA Data Storage Innovation Conference (DSICON) Santa Clara CA April 23, 2014 There is no such thing as an information recession however there are economic realities that require smart investments and innovation to move, process, protect, preserve and serve data for longer periods. After all, both people and data are getting larger and living longer. Data Infrastructures consists of servers, storage I/O networking hardware software and services spanning physical, virtual and cloud along with associated techniques, best practices, polices and people skillsets. This session looks at current and emerging trends, technologies, tools as well as challenges along with what to do to bridge the gap between barriers and opportunities from an IT customer and vendor perspective. In addition we will address popular industry buzzword bingo themes, the unknown and known, doing things the old way vs. new ways, cutting costs vs. removing cost, return on investment vs. return on innovation and technolutionary, the meritage of technology revolution and evolution.TRANSCRIPT

Industry Trends PerspectivesData Centers are Information Factories
There is no such thing as an information recessiono We have an addition to information (it needs to be accessible)o There are various threat risks, challenges, obstacles and opportunitieso People and data are living longer, plus getting largero More data to move, process, protect, preserve and serve longero There are economic realities (budgets and other constraints)o These require smart investments and innovation

Industry Trend: Various GAPsFind, Identify and Address Gap's = Opportunities
Various Gaps exists within and around Information Technology (IT)o Industry adoption/deployment vs. Customer deployment/adoption
o Focus on technology tools vs. comprehending what to use when
o Legacy vs. new greenfield, transformation vs. rip and replace
o Public Clouds vs Private Cloud and Legacy Paradigms
o Green environmental focus, missed productivity opportunities
o Vendors need to disrupt in order to sell new technology, however…
o Customers need to minimize business disruption while using new enabling tools
o Using new technologies in old ways vs. using new and old tools in new ways

Convergence: Data InfrastructuresSpanning Servers, Storage I/O Networking
Data Infrastructures consists of hard and soft productso Software (or people) defined across cloud, virtual and legacy hardwareo Hard products (Hardware, Software, Services) transformed into Soft Productso Soft produced defined by process, procedures, techniques, people to enable capabilityo Think of a capability, solution or service (e.g. soft product) as Valuewareo Your innovation is how you transform Hard products (technology) into Valuware

Financial Return on Investment (Quantitative) • ROI = (Gain from investment - Cost) / Cost• Gain = Economic valueReturn on Innovation (Qualitative)• ROI = (Gain from innovation - Cost) / Cost• Gain = Some benefit that brings value, success, subjectiveNeed balance of qualitative and quantitative• Show value in applicable context (metrics that matter)• Performance vs. productivity vs. busy/utilization• Spend to remove cost vs. cut cost with no ROIKeep in mind Garbage in, Garbage out• Good information put into good models = good results• Bad information put into good models = bad results• Good information put into bad models = bad results

Find and fix problems at source enables more effective growthIndustry trend: Fix problems at the source
• Expanding data footprint• Gets worse over time• Results in costly BC/DR• Problem is at the source• Solution is at the source

The information factory (Data Center and Data Infrastructure) needs to evolveEverything in the data center is not the same, why are you doing the same?Transform your capabilities into a service and business minded entityBe perceived as a business enabling asset vs. overhead cost centerKnow your costs and service values, communicate those to your customers Leverage People Defined Software, Hardware, Valueware, Cloud and VirtualWhen asked what's the best, answer what’s the problem or opportunityRemove barriers to change, or change the barriers to evolveThe Hybrid Home Run (Clouds, Storage, Servers, Data Protection, Security)Time to think, or rethink, leverage lessons learned from othersOld school, new school becomes old school as we move to the future school…

• Engage (Interact)o Get out of your comfort zone (at least for a few minutes ;)o With people: Make new contacts, leverage social networkingo With technology: Learn new things/techniques (sessions, expo)
• Educate (Learn and Share)o Determine what you don’t know, then address ito Learn something new, then share it with otherso Comprehend what you learn vs. memorize factso Find a mentor, be a mentor, teacher becomes student & vice versao Real experts learn what they don’t know, share what they do know
• Entertain (Have some fun)o Use common sense, it might be DejaVu, or revolutionary for others ;)o ABC = Always Be Closing or Always Be Communicating, Conversingo Have some fun while learning, learning and innovating should be fun

• Industry adoption is what the industry talks about or you read about• Industry deployment is what you are doing or will be doing• Look beyond physical hardware consolidation for savings
o Evolve from avoidance to efficiency, effectiveness and productivityo The next wave of virtualization is life beyond consolidationo Focus expands to agility, flexibility and elasticity for productivity
• You can not effectively manage without timely insighto Define and apply metrics that matter for situational awarenesso Deploy cross technology domain E2E and SRA tools along with PMDB/CMDB
• If you already know about all of this:o Are you doing or implementing it and if so, what are your experiences?o Otherwise, are you ready to start taking action?

Prepare and plan for your journey• You can’t effectively manage or make decisions on what you don’t know about• Hybrid Clouds provide a “home run highway” for many environments• Not everything is the same in the data center (information factory)• Explore how you can use new and old things in new or Hybrid ways• Start your journey now with Cloud and Virtual Data Storage Networking• Get your copy of this presentation at www.storageio.com/DSI2014
