Cities provide us with endless possibilities in terms of access to products and services. Simultaneously, cities are home to significant challenges such as congestion, waste and pollution. Atlas Copco is everywhere, every dayWe are a global provider of sustainable productivity solutions. On a given day, you will pass through, in and on the things that our products, services and applications enabled. For example, you drive a car that has been assembled using our tools. You take the subway through tunnels that have been excavated using our machines. You walk on roads that have been paved using our equipment. Whenever you have an espresso, it is likely to have been produced using our oil-free air compressors.

One third of all cars worldwide have been assembled using our tools. Mining companies use our drilling rigs, trucks and loaders. Construction companies use our demolition equipment, road pavers and portable compressors. Hospitals use Atlas Copco’s medical air. Most factories around the world need compressed air to operate, and our energy-saving compressors keep them running day and night. Making a difference through innovationOur impact on society has three primary sustainability dimensions: a) the performance of our own business and production processes, b) the efficiency of our products when our customers use them, and c) the positive and negative impact of the activities our customers perform using our products. While the efficiency of our products aims to minimize the negative impacts such as energy use, noise and pollution, the scope of positive impact is significant when exploring new ways to use our products to create sustainable societies and do good business.

As a corporate citizen, we consider our company a part of the urban development. That means we want to do everything we can to contribute to making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

In New York, we provided the mining equipment, applications and tools used to construct an 8.5 kilometres long subway tunnel for improved public transportation. Scheduled to open in December 2016, the first section of the subway line will carry around 200 000 passengers a day through the metropolitan area. In San Francisco, our oil-free air compressors created a safe underwater buffer to protect the marine wildlife during the implosion of the 80-year-old San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge’s 21 piers. In London, compressors from Atlas Copco support urban infrastructure by enabling the upgrade of London’s Tottenham Court Road underground station.

The future of sustainable citiesToday, cities are home to more than 50% of the global population, a share likely to increase to 70% by 2050. Cities around the globe account for more than 80% of global income. Most of the new jobs over the next few decades will be created in cities, offering livelihoods to hundreds of millions of people.

The main benefits of living in a city are the proximity to people, resources and services. However, as cities grow the strain on the environment and natural resources increases. The great challenge for cities is to provide access to products and services in a way that is sustainable. It is therefore not surprising that cities are hubs for action and innovation!

Five challenges for urban developmentWWF Sweden has listed five challenges for sustainable cities that need to be addressed in in order to promote sustainability around the globe. These are:

1. Ecological footprint: Today, the use of resources exceeds the planet’s capacity. The four main sources of overuse are energy, transport, food and housing. 2. Biodiversity: Urban expansion, as well as consumption of materials and energy of cities contribute to environmental degradation all over the globe.3. Investments: The transition to sustainable development in the world’s cities demands huge investments in infrastructure to break dependence on fossil fuels. 4. Accessibility: Citizens’ equitable access to goods, services and wellbeing is a challenge for many large cities. 5. Cooperation: Sustainable urban development requires new ways of thinking, from one-dimensional perspectives to thinking in terms of holistic systems.

Criterion of the JuryThe jury will apply the following criterion to evaluate all solutions, agree upon five finalists and decide on a winner.

Analysis: How well do you describe the key sustainability challenge?Impact: How sustainable could your city become with your solution? The more sustain-able, the better. Relevance: How well do you describe how Atlas Copco can contribute in the implementa-tion of your solution?

Competition Rules• Early Bird-feedback to all solutions need to be handed in no later than December 18

2016. Sustainergies will provide you with feedback on your ideas and suggestions no later than January 4 2016. Remember, you are allowed to make changes until the final deadline.

• The final deadline is January 29 2017. All solutions must be handed in through our website http://sustainergies.se. If you submit several solutions, your last uploaded version will enter the competition.

• Hand in your solution individually or as a team. If you compete as a team, any prize money will be shared between all members of the team. Any solution can be registered on one person only, please write the names of all your team-members in the solution. Hint: to increase your chances of winning when working as a team, submit several different solutions by registering them on different team-members, up to one solution per person.

• Solutions may consist of text, images, graphics, movies or other digital formats. Irre-spectively of how you design your solution may it not exceed a comparable length of 3,000 words. Your solution should be provided in English.

• Appendices are allowed. Use appendices only if you believe they are relevant to support your solution with additional information. Your solution must be fully under-standable without the appendices.
