In Vadensj, just outside Landskrona inSweden, hurricane Gudrun obliterated thechurch tower. Already under renovation, itwas known that the timbers of the woodenframe were worm eaten and rotten. Howwere the parish authorities now to ndreplacement beams? These had to be 17metres long and suitable for rebuilding thetower using traditional methods. Timber that

was sufciently long and straight could begot from Dalsland.Three hundred years ago, pines had beenplanted there to provide masts for ships. However, cutting the timber would requirean extraordinary sawmill. Poul Nielsencame to the rescue with 3.5 Logosol M7sawmills.

The damage done by the storm differs con-siderably from area to area. In some placesevery tree was felled, yet in other places theeffects of the hurricane were less severe butmore evenly distributed.Different types of damage have required

different types of solutions. In the most af-fected areas there have been no alternativesto large-scale mechanical clearing of timberfelled by the storm. There have been too largequantities and it has been too dangerous to dothe work manually. The clearing has gone better than we hoped

for. Our method of work proved to have morecapacity than anticipated. Today, two thirdsof trees felled have been transported to storesand industries, Professor Bjrheden says.

Selective OperationsBut now the working pace is beginning toslacken. The large-scale methods are not byfar as effective when it comes to taking careof single trees. The method that has provento be most effective on less affected private properties is when the forest owner himselffells and processes the timber with a portablesawmill. Professor Bjrnheden says: With

the help of the sawmills the forest ownershave been able to perform selective opera-tions at a low cost. Some have even sawn thetimber right in the forest, which have meanta reduction of transports and of the need forlarge storage areas. With the help of the sawmill, forest owners

were able to save high quality timber, whichwould otherwise have been left in the forest. It has been of great value, both economicallyand environmentally. After the storm thetimber prices were halved, and forest ownerswho also own a sawmill have made a protfrom rening the timber themselves, especial-ly if they have needed the processed timberfor personal use.

High ProtsThe timber prices in the retail trade of build-ing materials were not affected by the storm.Due to this, it has been more protable forforest owners that have a sawmill in their pos-session to sell processed timber direct to theconsumer, than it would have been if they hadsold the storm felled timber unprocessed. In the affected area there are thousands of

Logosol Sawmills. After the storm the saw-

mills have not only brought in money to theirowners, but they have also made a contribu-tion to the environment. By sawing trees thatwould have been impossible to take care ofmechanically, the amount of dead forest hasdecreased and thereby also diminished therisks of insect attacks. In Sweden, the use of Logosols Portable

Sawmills is widely spread, and one of theowners is a colleague of Rolf Bjrhedens. His name is Thomas Thrnqvist, Professor ofForest Products, who also uses the sawmill inhis research and teaching. He has even dem-onstrated his sawmill to the Swedish KingKarl XVI Gustav, dressed in his academicattire.

Multiply the CapacityLogosols portable sawmill plays an impor-tant role when clearing up after the storm,

says Professor Thrnqvist.A more important aspect is the psychologi-cal support the sawmill has been for many private forest owners. They can do some-thing to save some forest, instead of walkingaround on the property, waiting for the forestmachines to come.As a researcher in timber, Professor Thrn-

qvist has practical advice on how to increasethe capacity of the Logosol sawmill. Makea beam of the log, but do not split it. Make anarrow saw-cut into the medulla. This open-ing prevents the wood from cracking whendrying. In the future you can split the beam

and produce high quality boards. With thistechnique and a Logosol sawmill, you cansave 3-4 times more trees.

Storm-Stricken Swedes Made Good Money from Logosols Portable Sawmill

A natural disaster, such as a storm or a hurricane, is of course always a tragedyto those who are stricken by it. Sometimes, however, you can turn the misfortuneand try to make the best of the situation. The storm Gudrun hit the Swedish coast at the beginning of January, 2005. Itfelled over 2 billion cubic feet of timber. Thanks to Logosols Portable Sawmill, clearing up the debris has gone faster than expected. When dealing with smaller areas of forest, portable sawmills have been a greathelp, says Rolf Bjrnheden, Professor of Forest and Wood Engineering at VxjUniversity, which is situated in the center of the most affected area.

Swedish forest owners found their forests completely destroyed by the storm. Formany of them the Logosol sawmill was the salvation.

Logosols portable sawmill is perfect for selectiveoperations in storm damaged forest, Professor Rolf Bjrheden declares.

Logosols portable sawmill hasbeen, and still is, of great use afterthe storm

Hurricane Gudrun destroyed thetower of Vadensj church, outside

Landskrona. Although the whole of theSkne region was full of toppled trees, none of these were long or straightenough for rebuilding the tower usingoriginal methods.Poul Nielsens extra-long M7s and aDalsland plantation of trees for shipmasts provided the solution.

Poul Nielsen runs Fengersfors Byggnadsvrd,a building conservation company outsideml. He specialises in timber in odd dimen-

sions and the renovation of old buildings. In this case, the timber was to come fromMastedalen (Mast Valley). Located in DalsLnged, this is an area where, to furnish mastsfor ships, pines were planted in the eighteenthcentury.Mastedalen is owned by Per-Arne Hedlund,

an enthusiast who takes great care of hisunique trees and only allows felling whenhe thinks it is in a good cause. The straightgrowing pines will never see a paper mill. However, Per-Arne Hedlund willingly takesout his motor saw if an old church tower is in

need of renovation. The trees in Mastedalen are fantastic,

    enthuses Poul.

    Contacted through Logosol

When the restoration of Vadensj church had begun, the parish authorities in Landskronaknew nothing of Poul Nielsen and Mast-edalen. As the project progressed, it was dis-covered that the tower was rotten and wormeaten. The hurricane tore down parts of the tower

along with the scaffolding and everythingelse, relates Lars O. Nilsson, property man-ager for Landskrona parish authority.Rebuilding the tower in the original manner

required twelve extraordinary beans. Seven-teen metres long, straight and in two sizes, 6x 6 and 6 x 7. Not exactly something thattimber yards keep in stock. Thus, the building company contacted

Logosol and learned of Fengersfors Byg-gnadsvrd. Poul, in turn, got in touch withMastedalens owner and was given the greenlight. However, transporting the logs toFengersfors mill, where Poul normally has his

M7s set up, was out of the question. Becausethe trees were selected and felled at severalsites and times in Mastedalen, coordinatedtransport was impossible. Furthermore, treesof that size are a difcult cargo.

    Fifteen metres, knot free

So, we took the M7 sawmill out to the forest.Unfortunately, as there was no electricity onhand, we had to use petrol saws, says Poul.He estimates that electric saws would havedone the job in half the time.Three M7s and an extension were joined

together to form a 17.5 metre long sawmill. Each cut took around 20 minutes. With all the peripheral work, this meant that

producing a beam generally took one workingday. The timber is absolutely fantastic. For

example, we managed to cut out a 15-metrelong, four-sided, knotless, side board, re-counts Poul, who becomes lyrical when hedescribes the 300-year old pines. To be cer-tain of getting twelve straight beams, 15 treeswere felled. However, every single tree proved to be

ruler straight, exactly as intended when theywere planted to provide ship masts. The for-esters of those days understood the secrets of

timber. How much have we really learnt sincethen?Mastedalen is a slice of Swedish history. The

trees there were planted when Karl XII and

his army marched through Dalsland on therst campaign to Norway.Unique forest

Per-Arne Hedlund, the present owner, sees itas his duty to nurture this unique forest. Tim- ber is only released for appropriate projects, for example, renovating an old, hurricane-rav-aged church in Skne.

    Saving a hurricane-toppled churchtower with a extra-long Logosol M7

Poul Nielsens three and a half M7s were the only way that the 17-metre long, ruler straightbeams could be cut out for use in rebuilding the church tower in Vadensj.
