    EN 25817:1992

IntroductionThis International Standard should be used as areference in the drafting of application codes and/orother application standards. Itmay be used withina total quality system for the production ofsatisfactory welded joints. Itprovides three sets ofdimensional values from which a selection can bemade for a particular application. The quality levelnecessary in each case should be defined by theapplication standard or the responsible designer inconjunction with the manufacturer, user and/orother parties concerned. The level shall beprescribed before the start of production, preferablyat the inquiry or order stage. For special purposes, additional details may need to be prescribed. The quality levels given in this InternationalStandard are intended to provide basic referencedata and are not specifically related to anyparticular application. They refer to the types ofwelded joints in a fabrication and not to thecomplete product or component itself. Itis possible, therefore, for different quality levels to be applied toindividual welded joints in the same product orcomponent.Quality levels are listed in Table 0.1.

Table 0.1 - Quality levels for weldimperfections

Level symbol Quality levelD ModerateC IntermediateB StringentThe three quality levels are arbitrarily identifiedas D , C and B and are intended to cover the majorityof practical applications.Itwould normally be hoped that for a particularwelded joint the dimensional limits forimperfections could all be covered by specifying onequality level. In some cases, however, e.g. for certaintype of steels and structures as well as for fatigueloading or leak tightness applications, it may benecessary to specify different quality levels fordifferent imperfections in the same welded joint orto include additional requirements. The choice of quality level for any application shouldtake account of design considerations, subsequentprocessing, e.g. surfacing, mode of stressing(e.g. static, dynamic), service conditions(e.g. temperature, environment), and consequencesof failure. Economic factors are also important andshould include not only the cost of welding but alsothat of inspection, test and repair.

    Although this International Standard includestypes of imperfections relevant to the arc weldingprocesses given in clause 1, only those which areapplicable to the process and application in questionneed to be considered.Imperfections are quoted in terms of their actualdimensions, and their detection and evaluation mayrequire the use of one or more methods ofnon-destructive testing. The detection and sizing ofimperfections is dependent on the inspectionmethods and the extent of testing specified in theapplication standard or contract.This International Standard does not includedetails of recommended methods of detection andsizing and, therefore, it needs to be supplemented byrequirements for examination, inspection andtesting. Itshould be appreciated that methods ofnon-destructive examination may not be able to givethe detection, characterization and sizing necessaryfor use within certain types of imperfections shownin Table 1.Although this International Standard covers amaterial thickness range of 3 mrn to 63 mm, it maywell be applicable to thicker or thinner jointsprovided consideration is given to those technicalfactors which may influence the situation.1 ScopeThis International Standard provides guidance onlevels of imperfections in arc-welded joints in steel.Three levels are given in such a way as to permitapplication for a wide range of welded fabrications.The levels refer to production quality and not to thefitness-for-purpose (see 3.1) of the productmanufactured.This International Standard applies to- unalloyed and alloyed steels;- the following welding processes and theirdefined sub-processes in accordance withISO 4063:11 metal-arc welding without gas protection;12 submerged-arc welding;13 gas-shielded metal-arc welding;14 gas-shielded welding with non-consumableelectrode;15 plasma arc welding;

    - manual, mechanized and automatic processes;- all welding positions;- butt welds, fillet welds and branchconnections;- materials in the thickness range 3 mmto 63 mm.

When significant deviations from the jointgeometries and dimensions described in thisInternational Standard are present in the weldedproduct, it is necessary to evaluate to what extentthe provisions of this standard can apply.Metallurgical aspects, e.g. grain size, hardness, arenot covered by this International Standard.2 Normative referencesThe following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisionsof this International Standard. At the time ofpublication, the editions indicated were valid. Allstandards are subject to revision, and parties toagreements based on this International Standardare encouraged to investigate the possibility of~pplying the most recent editions of the standards

tlilfndicated below. Members ofIEC and ISO maintainregisters of currently valid International Standards.ISO 2553: 1984, Welds - Symbolic representation ondrawings.ISO 4063:1990, Welding, brazing, soldering andbraze welding of metals - Nomenclature ofprocesses and reference numbers for symbolicrepresentation on drawings.ISO 6520:1982, Classification of imperfections inmetallic fusion welds, with explanations.3 DefinitionsFor the purposes of this International Standard, thefollowing definitions apply.3.1fitness-for-purposea product is fit for its intended purpose when it

..,.~mctions satisfactorily in service during itsVipulated lifetime. The product may deteriorate inservice, but not to such a degree that fracture andsubsequent failure occurs. Products may, of course,be misused or overloaded; it is presumed that theactual conditions during service correspond to theintended conditions, including statistical variations,e.g. live loads3.2Weld thickness3.2.1fillet weld thickness, a; nominal throatthicknessheight of the largest isosceles triangle that can beinscribed in the weld section (see ISO 2553)NOTE 1 In countries in which the leg length, Z, is used as thedimension of a fillet weld, the limits for imperfections may bereformulated so that they refer to the leg length.

3.2.2butt weld thickness, sminimum distance from the surface of the part tothe bottom of the penetration, which cannot begreater than the thickness of the thinner of theparts (see ISO 2553)3.3short imperfectionsone or more imperfections of total length not greaterthan 25 mm in any 100 mm length of the weld or amaximum of 25 % of the weld length for a weldshorter than 100 mm3.4long imperfectionone or more imperfections of total length greaterthan 25 mm in any 100 mm length of the weld or aminimum of 25 % of the weld length for a weldshorter than 100 mm3 . 5projected areaarea given by length of weld examined multiplied bythe maximum width of weld3 . 6surface crack areaarea to be considered after fracture

4 SymbolsThe following symbols are used in Table 1.a nominal fillet weld throat thickness (fillet

thickness)b width of weld reinforcementd diameter of poreh size (height or width) of imperfection

length of imperfections nominal butt weld thickness or, in the case of

partial penetration, the prescribed depth ofpenetrationwall or plate thickness

z leg length of fillet welds (in case of isoscelesright angle triangular section z = a12)

5 Evaluation of weldsLimits for imperfections are given in Table 1.A welded joint should normally be evaluatedseparately for each individual type of imperfection(Nos. 1o 25).Different types of imperfection occuring at anycross-section of the joint may need specialconsideration (see No. 26).

oo.- 10 mm. there may be one indication having anecho arnpll-tude excess upto 12dB with a length 01 10mm per metre 01 weld. Nevertheless.a check test in the lorm 01 a spot-check is necessary for such indications. Radio-graphic examination or opening the weld on a spot-check basis. for instance. maybe considered by way of adcfrtionaf investigation.

exceed the echo amplitude of a circular reflector having a dia-meter of 1 mm or, when the reference block or reference linemethod is used, are up to 12 dB below the specified registra-tion limit. No deviation from this method of assessment ispermitted unless definite proof has been fumished that theIndications do not originate from cracks by opening the weldon a spotcheck basis.

4_4.4 Additional assessment criteriaIndications which suggest a zonal character and recordableindications during testing using a tandem scan constitutegrounds for doubt (see 4.1).I4.5 Assessment of indications of surface test (MP, FE)Linear indications which can be attributed to the separationof materials are not permissible.Isolated surface pores are permissible.

5 Supervision of testingThe relevant third party shall satisfy itself that the tests wereperformed faultlessly. particularly with regard to the type, extent and selection of the tested locations and the properI drawing up and assessment of the indications. If it comesacross serious deficiencies, it shall demand that tests orrepairs be repeated.Where radiographic examination is used. films and testreports. including the photographs made before repairs. shallbe submitted to the relevant third party. The relevant thirdparty shall decide whether it agrees with the assessment ofthe films, as a rule by carrying out spot-checks. If it encoun-ters any discrepancy in assessment, it shall assess all thefilms which come within the scope of testing.Where ultrasonic examination is used, the relevant third partyappraises the test reports. The results of the ultrasonic exam-ination performed at the works are monitored by the relevantthird party on a spot-check basis extending up to 10% of thescope of testing not necessarily on specific objects.IWhere the surface test (MP, FE) is used, the test reports shallbe submitted to the relevant third party.

6 DeviationsAny deviation from the stipulations in this AD 2000-Merkblattor from Appendix 1 to this AD-Merkblatt shall be agreed be-tween the parties concerned (manufacturer, customer/userand the relevant third party).

7 Test reportTest reports relating to the non-destructive tests shall beI drawn up. The test report shall contain information on repairswhere appropriate7.1 Magnetic particle examinationFor technical data, see 5.13 of DIN EN 1290.7.2 Penetrant examinationFor technical data, see clause 9 of DIN EN 571-1.7_3 Ultrasonic examinationInaddition to clearly identifying the test object by means of- manufacturing no.,- drawing no.,- material,- dimensions,- welding process,- area examined

Footnotes for table 1.1) Other materials shall be assigned to comparable material groups according to material specifications as stated in the assessment ofsuitability. Where components made from different material groups are welded together, the group having the greater scope of testingis applicable.

    2) U - unannealed, W - heat treated.3) Applies irrespective of stress categories according to AD 20QO.Merkblatt W 1O.7) LN Longitudinal welds and butt welds under full stressAN Circumferential welds (butt welds and lap-welded fillet welds as specified in 2.4 of AD 2000-Merkblatt HP 1; for welded ends, see clause 5 of AD 2000-Merkblatt HP 5/2)St Joints between LN (longitudinal welds) and AN (circumferential welds) or between LN and LN.

    6) KNStN

The fillet welds to be tested are .welds connecting weld-on parts, including assembly aids, to the pressure-bearing wallNozzle welds.

Scope of testing to be extended accordingly if resistance to caust ic embri ttlement is required. If conditions under which no postweld heat treatment is required are met.If experience has been proved as stated in 2.2.1 of AD 2000-Merkblatt HP 5/3, the scope of testing is reduced to 10 %.If experience has been proved as stated in 2.2.1 of AD 2000-Merkblatt HP 5/3, the scope of testing is reduced to 2%. Generally it issufficient to include the circumferential welds by testing the joints when making random tests on the longitudinal welds. To be tested on weld length, not necessarily on certain objects. In the case of pressure vessels which are to be subjected to a structuraltest by the relevant third party, the places to be tested shall be agreed with the relevant third party.Generally it is sufficient to include the joints and circumferential welds by testing the joints when making random tests on the longitudinalwelds. If experience has been proved as stated in 2.2.1 of AD 2000-Merkblatt HP 5/3, for material groups 1, 5.1 and 6 the scope of testingis reduced to the same extent as for wall thicknesses :5 15 mm.

    17) Should visual examination as stated in 2.1 of AD 2000-Merkblatt HP 513 give rise todoubts, a non-destructive test shall beperformed.18) If more than 10 nozzles are welded to a pressure vessel which are similar in terms of dimension and welding procedure, the scope of

testing can be reduced to 5 % of the nozzle welds but at least 2 nozzle welds shall be tested.19 ) If experience has been proved as stated in 2.2.1 of AD 2000-Merkblatt HP 5/3, a non-destructive test shall only have to be performed

If visual examination as stated in 2.1 of AD 2000-Merkblatt HP 513 has given r ise to doubts.2 : 5 ) If steels in mater ial groups 5.1 to 5.4 are used at lowest operating temperatures e, -10 D C and the requirements in AD 2000-Merkblatt

W 10 are met, the same provisions apply as for Material Groups 1 to 3.33 ) The MP method shall be used preferably If there is adequate permeability Jli:
