VACOs: small footprint, high performanceThe Contemporary Choice for Architectural PaintsSSynthomer first introduced the Emultex brand of Vinyl Acetate copolymers in the UK over 40 years ago. Through a programme of evolution and pursuit of higher performance Synthomer continues to be the leading supplier of these polymers in the UK. In addition Synthomer has been highly successful in exporting Emultex Vinyl Acetate/Versatate technology for many years into markets asas varied as South Africa, the Middle East, Mainland Europe and South East Asia. The advantages of Vinyl Acetate copolymers over emulsion polymer systems such as Styrene Acrylates are many and include:

1. Emultex copolymers can offer equivalent performance to Styrene Acrylates, often with minimum reformulating requirements.2. Emultex copolymers have been optimized for performance as a result of > 40 years experience in manufacture and application.3. Vinyl Acetate/Versatate copolymers (VACOs) have a lower overall carbon footprint than acrylics, styrene acrylics or vinyl acetate/ethylenes (EPDLA Life Cycle Analysis).

Going with VACOs in paint - a clever choice A plus in block resistanceEmulEmultex Copolymers offer improved block resistance over Styrene Acrylates by way of a more favourable ratio of Tg to MFFT. The Minimum Film Forming Temperature (MFFT) of emulsion polymers can usually only be lowered with the aid of coalescing solvents: however in the case of Vinyl Acetate the hydrophilic tendencies of the polymer lead to the “hydroplasticisation” effect – where the carrier water in the foformulation itself plays a part in temporarily plasticising the film. This enables Emultex grades to have a higher Tg at similar MFFT to Styrene Acrylates and hence lower surface tack/better block resistance.

Boosted robustness and stabilityEmultex Copolymers offer better stability compared to Styrene Acrylates in both factory-produced and ‘point of sale’ tinted systems. This is due to the incorporation of protective colloids into the polymer backbone and also to a stabilising system that has been refined through many years of experience in applications testing. Gloss potential, wide thickener compatibility – leading to a wide range of rheologicalrheological options - and general formulating robustness are just some of the additional advantages of the Emultex brand.

A typical paving material (also referred to hot mix asphalt concrete – HMAC or HMA) consists of about 93 – 97% mineral aggregate (stone), sand and filler. The remaining percentage is bitumen.

Today the global demand for bitumen accounts for more than 100 million tons per year. Pavements designed and constructed for heavy duty traffic and extreme weather conditions require specially designed engineered bitumen grades.

Remarkable resilience to UV radiationEmulEmultex Copolymers for exterior paints have proven track records and a demonstrable pedigree for durability in many diverse and demanding environments. They also have the added benefit of being more resistant to UV/yellowing than e.g. Styrene Acrylate copolymers in “sunshine” climates.

America, Europe and South East Asia. In March 2017, we acquired the coalescing agents and Butyl Ethyl Propanediol (BEPD) business from Perstorp Oxo Belgium AB. The newly acquired businesses significantly improve our footprint to a number of speciality markets which we will continue to serve through a strong network of local technical service and sales branches, supported by regional application dedevelopment and production in our key markets. We deliver the right formula, globally, individually.

Synthomer is one of the world’s leading suppliers of emulsion and speciality polymers supporting leadership positions in many market segments including coatings, construction, technical textiles, adhesives, paper and synthetic latex gloves. The company has its Head Office in London (UK) and provides customer focused services from operational centres in Harlow (UK), Marl (Germany), Kuala LumpurLumpur (Malaysia), Shanghai (China) and Dubai (UAE). In June 2016 we have acquired the Monomers, Dispersions and Powders business (MDP) from Hexion with dedicated production sales and customer service facilities in North
