Structural & ArchitecturalExpansion Joint & Preformed Sealant Products

The EMSEAL SolutionEMSEAL is proud to offer high-quality, innovative anddurable materials for use in sealing and bridging smalland large building component and structural joints infoundations, decks, walls, and floors. This catalog offers aselection of the industry’s finest sealants and expansionjoint products for structural and architectural applications.

Product is important, but the company’s track record ofsuccessfully completed projects is equally attributable toits approach to expansion joint treatment. Anybody canmake an expansion joint appear watertight in cross-section. However, joints leak at changes in plane, direction and where dissimilar joint materials meet.

Successful projects with expansion joints that don’t leakare characterized by a collaborative commitment by theA/E team, the general contractor, the joint manufacturer, and the waterproofing sub-contractor to detail, construct, fabricate, and install three-dimensional solutions. EMSEALuniquely facilitates this process through a needs analysisand communication process that anticipates andaddresses problems before they literally becomecast in concrete.

This collaborative approach is not just theory. It is apractice that has resulted in the successful execution ofwatertight expansion joints on new and retrofit projects onstructures of every type. Owners, architects, engineers, general contractors, EMSEAL, and like-mindedwaterproofing sub-contractors are proving this approachpossible and practical.

With over 30 years of designing and supplying jointsealing and bridging solutions for projects worldwide,EMSEAL has emerged as the innovation and performanceleader in providing lasting expansion joint solutions.

ApplicationsEMSEAL products are designed and manufactured to meetthe demands of both the remediation of existing buildingsand the maintenance of new structures. EMSEAL'sengineered technologies provide the designer, the installerand the building owner with the lowest total cost ofownership expansion joint solutions in the industry.

Selector Guides

EMSEAL products address the application demands ofmodern construction. From small details such as traffic pointloads to larger concerns such as LEED certification andseismic design, EMSEAL is meeting the evolving demandsof modern architecture and engineering. This catalogdisplays EMSEAL's architectural product line of joint sealanttechnologies.

EMSEAL Product FeaturesBreakthroughs in Foam ImpregnationsThe backpressure resulting from impregnated foamtechnology eliminates the need for mechanical anchoringmethods. Screws and other hardware, which traditionallyhave been the only means to anchor to a substrate, areeliminated. Non-invasive anchoring allows for a secure holdwith simpler installation in a much shorter time.

100% Wax-freeThere is no place for saturated waxes in the impregnatedfoam industry. Both saturated wax products, as well asasphalt technologies, suffer similar shortcomings such aslow temperature brittleness and high temperature instability.

EMSEAL’s microsphere-modified, 100% acrylicimpregnation is unique in enhancing the desirablecharacteristics of the foam base such as resilience, whileimparting water and temperature resistance. Thisformulation outperforms imitation products based oncommodity foams and wax saturations.

First in Fire-Rated, Watertight,Multi-Purpose Joint SealsCertified by Underwriters Laboratories to the rigors ofUL-2079, EMSEAL’s EMSHIELD series of products ischanging the expansion joint sealing game. It is no longernecessary to have to choose between watertightness andfire rating. Because the fire-rating is now built into theexpansion joint it is no longer necessary to specify twoinstallations of separate joint sealant and fire-resistantjoint fillers in either decks or walls. EMSEAL also offers apick-resistant, fire-rated expansion joint when vandalismand tampering are an important concern.

Enhanced R-ValueEMSEAL’s foam-based, wall-joint systems are excellentinsulators. They contain no metal and attach to substrateswithout invasive metal anchors avoiding any conductivethermal breaks in wall components. Whether for small joints infaçade panels or at window perimeters, or in the backupwalls of cavity-wall construction, or even in structural walls ofblock or precast, EMSEAL joint sealants provide continuity ofinsulation at all penetrations.

Sound BarrierWalls sealed with our preformed sealants have soundabsorption properties that approximate those of a solid wall.Independent laboratory STC and OITC tests prove that fillinga structural joint with an EMSEAL product can restore theoriginal sound transmission coefficient of the wall itself.Choose a fire-rated EMSEAL product and the wall is sound-proofed, fire-rated, insulated, color-coordinated and able tomove – all in a single product installation.

Ecologically Sound (LEED)EMSEAL’s hybrid impregnated materials use water-basedemulsions and contain no chlorinated wax, isobutylene orother deleterious chemicals. The unique features of theseproducts are synchronous with LEED design principles andcan contribute toward achieving LEED points. And EMSEALfoam products have an industry-leading lifecycle advantage.

Commitment to Service and Quality AssuranceAt EMSEAL service begins from the first contact and contin-ues throughout the design, procurement and installationprocess. BACKERSEAL (Greyflex) is an economicalpreformed expanding foam sealant that provideswatertight secondary sealing in applicationsbehind conventionally installed liquid sealant andbacker rod or directly behind field-applied lowmodulus liquid sealants.

BACKERSEAL behind field-applied liquidsealant provides true "belts and suspenders"sealing – 2 systems working on differentprinciples to guarantee performance of thesame function.

Structures of all sizes canbenefit from the performanceand ease-of-installation offeredby BACKERSEAL.

BACKERSEAL in place as a secondary seal toliquid sealant and backer rod. This doublesystem ensures a redundant seal to water andinsulates against energy loss while preservingthe liquid sealant manufacturer’s geometry foroptimal performance.

BACKERSEAL is installed in a position recessed fromthe joint face. A low-modulous liquid sealant is directlyapplied over it to complete a hybrid sealant system.

EMSHIELD WFR2 / WFR3

EMSHIELD WFR2 and WFR3 are patent-pending, single-unit, fire-ratedexpansion joints which provide water protection, sound attenuation, thermal insulation, color coordination, and accommodate structural jointmovement. WFR2 (Wall, Fire-Rated 2-Hours) and WFR3 (3-Hours)continue the line of breakthrough, multi-function, structural expansionjoint materials from EMSEAL. Both have been tested and certified byUnderwriters Laboratories (UL) to the rigors of UL and ULC 2079.

Fire-retardant impregnated foam is factory pre-coated on both faceswith an intumescent fire-proofing material. It is then coated again onboth faces with a waterproof silicone coating which is available in achoice of 26 colors for each side.

Providing an excellent barrier to sound transfer, WFR2 and WFR3 havean STC rating of 62 (in a STC 68 wall) and an OITC rating of 52 (in aOITC 52 wall). They also been tested to ASTM E330, ASTM E331, andASTM E283 standards maintaining air pressure and stopping water andwind penetration at 200 mph.

EMSHIELD WFR2 and WFR3 provide a watertight, clean handling, UVstable, non-staining, low-temperature-flexible, high-temperature-stable,energy-efficient, sound attenuating and fire-rated joint seal in asingle installation process. For interior and exterior walls.Movement of ± 25% (50% total)

WFR2 sizes are available in 1/4" increments of nominalsizes from 1" to 6". Nominal size is equivalent to jointgap size at mean temperature.

SEISMIC COLORSEAL

SEISMIC COLORSEAL is an idealsolution for textured or roughsubstrates. The product’s pliantnature combined with its inherentbackpressure allows it to conformto the textured wall surface.

Notching and bending the foambacking permits the siliconefacing of the bellows to remainseamless at directional changeswhich are historically difficult tomake watertight. For warrantedCAD details between dissimilarEMSEAL joint technologiesplease call EMSEAL or go towww.emseal.com.

SEISMIC COLORSEAL installed ina building facade betweendissimilar materials maintains theR-Value in the building envelope.Because SEISMIC COLORSEALuses no fasteners it is especiallysuited to filling joints at insidecorners.

Non-invasive anchoring andsealing is achieved through acombination of the pressure-sensitive adhesive acrylicimpregnation, the inherent backpressure of the foam and a field-applied corner bead of silicone.

Curves in building elements areeasily accommodated through thematerial’s omni-directionalflexibility.

SEISMIC COLORSEAL is held in place by a combination of itspressure-sensitive adhesive impregnation, the inherent back-pressure of the expanding foam as well as by a field-installedbead of liquid silicone at the substrate-to-bellows interface.

SEISMIC COLORSEAL is uniquely suited to sealingstructural joints in curtainwalls. Non-invasive anchoringmeans that mullions are not violated by screwing throughthem as occurs with “strip-seal” systems.

SEISMIC COLORSEAL is an excellent, simple sealingsolution at inside corner conditions where it isimpossible to install mechanically fastened ‘strip-seal’ systems. In cavity-wall conditions, installationof SEISMIC COLORSEAL in the structural backupmaintains integrity of thermal insulation as well asthe air barrier while preventing passage of cavitymoisture into the structure.

Specialty Seals

The CHEMSEAL System remains watertight incontact with chemicals and chemical dilutions.

CHEMSEAL is a watertight expansion joint system which features apolysulfide bellows sealing surface backed by an integral pressure-resisting impregnated foam backing. The polysulfide bellows sideprovides resistance to many chemicals commonly found in non-puresolutions. This makes CHEMSEAL a great solution for joints and seamsoccurring in waste water tanks, chlorinated water reservoirs, industrialtesting tanks or where diluted-chemical contact may occur.

DSF System

DSF System is a joint-face-adhered, precompressed, primary sealfor retrofit and new structural expansion joints and construction jointsin walls and floors in food production and preparation environments.

Compliant to NSF/ANSI Standard 61 for contact with potable drinkingwater and with FDA Regulation CFR 177.2600 for indirect contactwith food.

CHEMSEAL is available innominal sizes of 1/2" to 4". DSFis available in nominal sizes of1/2" to 8". Sizes are availablein 1/4” increments. Nominal sizeis equivalent to joint gap size atmean temperature. ConsultEMSEAL for larger sizeapplications. In submerged applications theamount of hydrostatic headpressure that can be resisted byCHEMSEAL or DSF is affectedby joint width and depth of seal.Consult EMSEAL for sizerequirements.
