stryker’s Patient Handling Equipment
headquarters in Portage, mI provides
advanced engineering and manufacturing
facilities that lead the way in innovation,
quality and service.
Our Rich History
As a resident orthopedic surgeon in the late 1930s, Dr. Homer
Stryker came to realize that the medical equipment he relied on
to help deliver care did not adequately meet his needs or those
of his patients. With a natural predisposition to find a better way,
Dr. Stryker conceived new and imaginative solutions for patient
comfort and caregiver efficiency. By the early 1940s, Dr. Stryker
had received so many requests for his devices that he set up
the Orthopedic Frame Company to manufacture them.
By the late 1970s, John Brown had assumed the CEO
role at Stryker, and the company’s stock went public. Under
his leadership, Stryker experienced nearly three decades of
phenomenal growth, expanding into markets spanning from
endoscopy to joint replacements and orthobiologics.
Today, Stryker is a global leader in the medical device industry
whose capabilities span the entire continuum of care. Located
in Portage, Michigan, Stryker’s EMS Equipment division is one
of many market-leading divisions that continually strives to meet
high standards of quality, service, and growth. Stryker built its
exceptional reputation by pursuing a straightforward philosophy of
inventing, making, selling and delivering best-in-class products.
With EMS Equipment, Stryker focuses on
relentlessly creating innovative products that
address the needs of pre-hospital customers
throughout the world.
stryker The Company
stryker’s annual 0 percent growth is founded
by driven employees who are committed to
deliver exceptional products that improve patient
outcomes and reduce the risk of operator and
patient injury.
At stryker, we do more than make promises — we deliver results.
Reduced Risk of Injury
It’s not just a slogan, but a crucial goal that drives our efforts.
At Stryker EMS, we’re committed to delivering unmatched
solutions that reduce the risk of injury to EMTs while enhancing
patient care. Low-force release mechanisms, optimally-
positioned lift handles and color-coded controls are only a few of
the key differences that enhance responsiveness and improve
safety. Our equipment is thoroughly researched and tested to
assure not only ease-of-use but improved outcomes. The results
are products optimized for superior ergonomics, reduced risk
of injury and the utmost value for your investment.
Look for the logo and our distinctive bright
yellow color. They are your assurance that you are using the
finest patient handling equipment available.
Because lives depend on it.™
Continuous Innovation
As the demands of emergency medicine and pre-hospital
patient transport intensify, so do the standards for EMS
equipment. Stryker EMS actively listens to paramedics and
EMTs, responds to the demands of the field, and designs
products that outpace the needs. In the process, we’ve
developed the most effective patient handling equipment in
the industry, and a user loyalty second to none.
Our mission is to improve patient handling and
treatment in the pre-hospital care setting and
relentlessly create the most awesome EMS
products in the world.

-inch Front Caster Wheels Enables wheelchair like mobility. Maximizes maneuverability.
A breakthrough in stairway mobility, the patented Stryker Stair-PRO is
lightweight, rugged and easy to use. To attain the superior ergonomics
that reduce the risk of injury, a number of factors were considered,
including handle placement, weight distribution and adequate braking.
• Innovative stair-TREAD system eliminates lifting when moving downstairs
• Design supports proper ergonomic lifting
• Extendable handles improve line-of-vision and create more personal space between operators and patient
• All three models fold to a compact size for convenient storage in your existing ambulance
“In 30 years of being an EMS Director, this is one of the few pieces of ambulance equipment that has ranked full EMS crew approval. It is an asset to our patient care equipment and makes movement downstairs and in manufactured housing (mobile homes/trailers) much easier for both our patients and our crews.”

Stair-PRO has been scientifically tested and is the only chair proven to reduce the risk of lower back disorder.
Results The Stair-PRO model 6252 was found to reduce the relative risk of lower back disorder significantly as compared to all other models tested. (see chart)
Conclusion Patient transport in stairways is a common task that has a high reported back injury rate. The design of stair chairs can significantly influence operator and patient safety. This testing substantiates Stair-PRO’s ability to help reduce the risk of back injury.
Results Scientific comparison of the two widely available tracked stair chairs, determined that Stair-PRO operators experience significantly lower L5/S1 compression and shear forces (approximately 40 percent and 34 percent, respectively) when compared to the EZ Glide1 (see chart).
Conclusion Subtle differences in product design can have a measurable impact on product efficacy. Using the Stryker Stair-PRO when descending stairs reduces operator back strain more than other tracked chairs tested. 2, 3, 4

Safely evacuating individuals from a multi-level building is one
of today’s greatest concerns. With potential evacuation requirements for
medical conditions, service interruptions, emergencies and accidents,
facility managers are responsible to plan for assisting and transporting
immobile people to safety.
In urgent situations, anyone could be a first responder. That’s why Stryker
developed the Evacuation Chair with intuitive features so any person can
quickly get an immobile individual to safety.
• Essential for evacuation of disabled or injured persons from multi-level facilities in emergency situations
• Innovative stair-TREAD system enables one person to control movement downstairs without lifting
• Extendable head- and foot-end lift handle design supports proper ergonomic lifting technique, while improving line- of-vision to feet and steps when lifting the chair upstairs or over obstacles
• Designed to maximize mobility in tight spaces
• Folds to compact size for convenient storage
• Exceeds fire safety requirements and emergency response guidelines established to support the Americans with Disabilities Act
