EMS Council Meeting, June 28 - 29 2014, Centro Carlos Santamaría, UPV / EHU, Donostia, Spain UMI-RSME-SCM-SEMA-SIMAI Congress, June 30 to July 4 2014, Faculty of Science and Technology, UPV/EHU, Leioa (opening and closing at Bizkaia Aretoa, Bilbao) EMS - European Mathematical Society is a learned society representing mathematicians and promotes the development of all aspects of mathematics throughout Europe. BCAM collaborates in both activities to be held in Euskadi and Luis VEGA, is the main organiser and one of the RSME delegates of the EMS Council. The EMS Council meets every second year and is responsible for electing the President, Vice- Presidents and other members of the EMS Executive Committee for a period of four years. In 2015 the EMS will celebrate its 25th aniversary, looking towards future mathematics and its connections with other disciplines and with the rechnological developments of the society in this rapidly changing world. The Council is the highest governing body of the EMS, whose biennial meetings ain to decide the composition of the Executive Committee for the next years and the future action lines of the EMS. Delegates at the Council shall be elected for a period of four years and may be re-elected provided that consecutive service in the same capacity does not exceed eight years. Delegates will be elected in the following four categories of Members: Full (national mathematical societies, which elect 1, 2, 3, or 4 delegates according to their membership), Associate, Institutional and Individual. On June 28 - 29, in Donostia and June 30 to July 4 in Bilbao, we will be receiving a significant number, (more than 120) European mathematicians, EMS members, from its current president to other international renown delegates: In the current period since 2011, Marta SANZ-SOLÉ, full professor at Universitat de Barcelona, became both the first women and the first Spanish that has chaired the EMS. She has an extensive and international scientific trajectory. Her scientific specialization is in the area of stochastic processes and Malliavin calculus. She has published almost 100 papers and has served on several editorial boards of scientific journals. She has participated in different international evaluation committees and has been recognized among other prizes with Narcis Monturiol Medal for scientific and technological merit of the Government of Catalunya. She has also performed other roles such as: Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics (1993-96) and vice president of the Division of Experimental Sciences and Mathematics (2000-03). Since 2007 she is part of the management team of the Centre for Mathematical Research (CRM) in Barcelona. Remarkable also is her contribution in the Catalan Society of Matemàtiques (SCM) and the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society and filmsat 3rd European Congress of Mathematics (3ECM) held in 2000 in Barcelona and on the Executive Committee of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2006 ) of Madrid. news Bilbao, June 13, 2014

One of the most recognized delegates is Jean-Pierre BOURGUIGNON, President of the European Research Council since January 2014 and Director of the IHÉS-Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, France, 1994-2013. He was also the first ERC Panel Chair in Mathematics, for Starting Grants.

He spent his whole career as a fellow of the CNRS-Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France. He held a Professor position at École Polytechnique,1986-2012, was President of the Société Mathématique de France,1990-92 and President of the European Mathematical Society from 1995 to 1998. He is a former member of the Board of the EuroScience organisation, 2002-2006, and served on ESOF-EuroScience Open Forum committees since 2004. He received the Prix Paul Langevin in 1987 and the Prix du Rayonnement Français in Mathematical Sciences and Physics from the Académie des Sciences de Paris in 1997. He is a foreign member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences and was elected honorary member of the London Mathematical Society, 2005. He has also been the Secretary of the mathematics section of the Academia Europaea. He was made Doctor Honoris Causa of Keio University, Japan, 2008 and of Nankai University, China,2011.

Luis VEGA, Scientific Director of BCAM, and full professor at UPV / EHU - Universidad del País Vasco / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, is one of the three delegates of RSME-Royal Spanish Mathematical Society, the main organiser of the EMS Council, one of the pleanary speakers and had co-organised also a special session of the Congress.

The First Joint Congress organized among UMI-Unione Matematica Italiana, RSME-Real Sociedad Matemática Española, SCM-Societat Catalana de Matemàtiques, SEMA-Sociedad Española de Matemática Aplicada and SIMAI-Società Italiana per la Matematica Applicata e Industriale (that will be held from June 30 to July 4 in Leioa) is open to international participation, especially those working in Italy and Spain, will be sponsored by the EMS-European Mathematical Society which counts among its members about 60 mathematical societies in Europe and 3000 members.

The scientific program consist of twelve plenary lectures, a three hours course and thirty scientific sessions, three of them co-organised by BCAM members.

Ø EMS - European Mathematical Society es una sociedad científica que representa a los matemáticos y promueve el desarrollo de todos los aspectos de las matemáticas a través de Europa.

Ø BCAM auspiciará ambas actividades a celebrarse en Euskadi y Luis VEGA, es el organizador y uno de los delegados de la RSME en la Reunión del Comité Ejecutivo de la EMS.

El Comité Ejecutivo de la EMS se reúne cada dos años para tomar decisiones sobre su futuro y es responsable de la elección del Presidente, Vicepresidentes, Secretario, Tesorero y otros miembros del Comité Ejecutivo por un período de cuatro años. El Presidente sólo puede servir un término. Los miembros/delegados del Comité podrán ser reelegidos, siempre que no sea superior a ocho años consecutivos. Los delegados serán elegidos por los siguientes cuatro categorías de Miembros: ºTitulares, Asociados, Institucionales e Individuales.

El Consejo es el máximo órgano de gobierno del EMS, cuyas reuniones bienales son para decidir la composición de su Comité Ejecutivo para los próximos años y sus futuras líneas de actuación

Los delegados en el Consejo serán elegidos por un período de cuatro años y podrán ser reelegidos siempre que el servicio consecutivos en la misma capacidad no exceda de ocho años. Los delegados serán elegidos en las siguientes cuatro categorías de miembros: titulares (sociedades matemáticas nacionales, que eligen a 1, 2, 3, o 4 delegados de acuerdo a su membresía), asociados, institucionales e individuales.

Los días 28 y 29 de Junio en Donostia y 30 de Junio al 4 de Julio en Bilbao, recibiremos un significativo número, más de 120, destacados matemáticos europeos que forman la EMS; desde su actual presidenta hasta delegados de renombre internacional:

Marta SANZ-SOLÉ es actualmente, desde 2011, la Presidenta de la EMS, de cuyo Comité Ejecutivo formó parte de 1997-2004. Ha sido la primera española y mujer al frente de esta organización. Es catedrática de la Facultad de Matemáticas de la Universitat de Barcelona y en su currículum figura una extensa trayectoria científica con una notable proyección internacional. Su especialidad científica es en el área de los procesos estocásticos y cálculo de Malliavin.

Ha publicado unos 100 artículos en revistas internacionales de renombre y ha sido miembro de varios comités editoriales de revistas científicas. Ha participado en diferentes comités internacionales de evaluación y ha sido reconocida entre otros premios con la Medalla Narcis Monturiol al mérito científico y tecnológico de la Generalitat de Catalunya. También ha realizado otras funciones, tales como: Decana de la Facultad de Matemáticas (1993-96), y vicepresidenta de la División de Ciencias Experimentales y Matemáticas (2000-03). Desde 2007 forma parte del equipo de dirección del Centre de Recerca Matemàtica, (CRM) en Barcelona. Destacable además es su contribución en la Societat Catalana de Matemàtiques (SCM) y la Real Sociedad Matemática Española y su trabajo en el 3 Congreso Europeo de Matemáticas (3ECM 2000) en Barcelona y en el Comité Ejecutivo del Congreso Internacional de Matemáticos (ICM 2006) de Madrid.

Jean-Pierre BOURGUIGNON es uno de los delegados más reconocidos, Presidente del ERC-Consejo Europeo de Investigación desde enero de 2014 y Director de la IHÉS-Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, Francia, 1994-2013. También fue el primer presidente de la Subcomisión del ERC en Matemáticas, para subvenciones de inicio de carreras de jóvenes investigadores.

Ha sido durante toda su carrera, investigador del CNRS-Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Francia. Ocupó una posición profesor en la École Polytechnique,1986-2012, fue Presidente de la Société Mathématique de Francia,1990-92, y ha sido presidente de la Sociedad Matemática Europea 1995-1998. Es ex miembro de la Junta Directiva de la organización EuroScience, 2002-2006, y ha servido en los comités de ESOF-EuroScience Open Forum desde 2004. Recibió el Premio Paul Langevin en 1987 y el Prix du Rayonnement Français en Ciencias Matemáticas y Física de la Académie des Sciences de París en 1997. Es miembro extranjero de la Real Academia Española de Ciencias y fue elegido miembro honorario de la Sociedad Matemática de Londres, 2005, y ha sido el secretario de la sección de matemáticas de la Academia Europaea.

Fue nombrado Doctor Honoris Causa de la Universidad de Keio, Japón, 2008, y de la Universidad de Nankai, China, 2011.

Luis VEGA, Director Científico de BCAM, y catedrático de UPV/EHU - Universidad del País Vasco / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, es uno de los tres delgados de la RSME-Real Sociedad de Matemática Española, el organizador principal del Consejo de la EMS, uno de los conferenciantes plenarios y co-organizador de una de las sesiones temáticas especiales del Congreso.

El Primer Congreso Conjunto entre la UMI-Unione Matematica Italiana, RSME-Real Sociedad Matemática Española, SCM-Societat Catalana de Matemàtiques, SEMA-Sociedad Española de Matemática Aplicada y SIMAI-Società Italiana per la Matematica Applicata e Industriale, (que se celebrará de Junio 30 a Julio 4 en Leioa), abierto a la participación internacional especialmente a los que trabajan en Italia o España, estará patrocinado por la EMS-European Mathematical Society que cuenta entre sus miembros a unas 60 sociedades matemáticas de Europa y 3000 miembros.

El programa científico del congreso consta de doce conferencias plenarias, un curso de tres horas y treinta sesiones científicas, tres de ellas co-organizadas por miembros de BCAM.
