A seminar on “Disability Awareness” was organized by Rehabilitation Society on 8th October 2015. Dr Asbar Javed coordinator Rehabilitation Society gave the opening remarks.The Guest Speaker Mr Farman Ali shared his story of being paralyzed, unable to perform any of the daily chores, surrounded by gloom and uncertainty, and how he battled with this bolt from the blue with the help of

physical therapy. Dr Shahid Ahmad Heera elucidated the role of physical therapy in rehabilitation. Closing remarks were delivered by Mr Saleem Kiyani Director Press and Publications. He stressed on the students to draw strength and guidance from the fascinating and inspiring narrative of Farman Ali. He also congratulated the Rehabilitation Society on organizing an enriching seminar.

TUF hosts Intervarsity Great Debate Contest organized by British High Commission

The University of Faisalabad hosted an all Faisalabad Intervarsity English “Great Debate Contest” organized by British High Commission Islamabad on November 10, 2015. Mr Ben French, DFID Punjab Representative, UK Aid Program, was the chief guest of the event. Students from different Universities of Faisalabad participated in the contest. After three rounds with different topics in the contest, Mr Abdul Hannan, from GC University Faisalabad got the first position. Mr Ben appreciated the students’ views on different national and international issues. He also thanked the Management of TUF for hosting this event. Dr Abdul Majeed Rector TUF presented a shield to Mr Ben on behalf of the University of Faisalabad.

Team from UMDC in International Conference on Medical Education (ICME) 2015 -Turkey

International Conference on Medical Education (ICME) 2015

A seven-member delegation form University Medical and Dental College, The University of Faisalabad attended ICME 2015: Future challenges in health profession education. This international moot was held at Helic congress center, Istanbul, Turkey from 15th – 18th Oct 2015.Medical educationists from all over the world attended this conference including renowned leaders in health profession education such as Richard M Harden and John Dent. After the organizing institute, The University of Faisalabad had the maximum representation in terms of number of research papers presented. Out of seven members who attended this conference five of them presented papers on different topics that were highly appreciated. The papers presented included 1. “Embarking a curriculum change: Faculty perceptions

of medical school’s organizational readiness” by Prof Dr Tanzeela Khalid

2. “Team based learning in Pathology: Impact on test scores and student satisfaction” by Prof Dr Sadia Hameed

3. “TBL vs Didactic lecture: What do test scores say?” by Dr Shirza Nadeem

4. “Effect of nonacademic variables (Gender and previous system of Education, HSCE/ GCE) on medical student’s score” by Dr Saba Tariq

5. “Evaluation of cognitive levels and item writing flaws in pharmacology modular exam MCQs presented” by Dr Sundus Tariq.

The faculty also visited the transcontinental region famous for its mosques and rich cultural heritage. It was a wonderful learning experience and a delightfully proud moment for all.

Character Building Society TUF arranged a seminar on “National / Social Responsibilities” on 28th October 2015. This was aimed to emphasize the Importance of social responsibility.Samran Chaudhary General Secretary of Character Building Society presented documentaries in this regard. Prof M A Sidiqque Head Textile department highlighted the importance of national/social responsibilities. Mr Saleem Kayani Director Press and publications was the chief guest. In a comprehensive discourse, he said that the teachings of Islam provided a complete code for individuals as well as the community for discharging their social and national responsibilities.Umar Azmat President Character Building Society gave a vote of thanks.

Going beyond the horizons of textbooks and making something innovative is certainly a measure to improve an individual. Workshops, seminars and conferences provide the same objective for a student. Exposure to these practices makes a management student grasp the practical aspects being followed in the working environment. A jointly organized seminar by the Management Studies Department and the Students Welfare Foundation was held on 1st October 2015. Successful young entrepreneurs of the world under the age of 35 all over the world were

under review, to understand the essence of these stories of success. A number of documentaries depicting the rewarding efforts of budding business tycoons like Mark Zukerberg, Larry Page, etc were also shown. Dr Khalil Ahmad – Head of SWF advised the students to critically analyze the working style and methodology of successful businessman in order to enable them to make their mark in the competitive corporate culture.Mr Saleem Kayani Director Press and Publication also shared his experiences and motivated the students to put their best foot forward in order to succeed in today’s fast moving innovative business culture.

Quality Enhancement Cell aims provision of professional competency through lectures/workshops by experts. This intends to upgrade the knowledge of faculty members in areas of communication skills, teaching /research methodologies etc. A seminar in this regard was arranged on 4th November

2015. Head of Computational Sciences Major (R) Muhammad Saeed was the resource person. He shared valuable knowledge about the difficult area of “Project Management”. A large number of students and faculty members attended this seminar.

Professional Competency Enhancement Program on “Project Management”

The University of Faisalabad arranged sessions for Earthquake safety and Fire fighting awareness in collaboration with the Department of Civil Defense Faisalabad, on November 19th and 25th 2015 in both

campuses. Mr Mudassar Nawaz Malik, Senior Training officer from Civil Defense gave a comprehensive presentation about earthquake safety, fire fighting techniques and use of fire extinguishers.

School of Optometry observed World sight Week on October 2-8, 2015. Dr Shafqat Javed from DHQ Hospital and Ms Khalida, Principal Al-Faisal Blind School were the chief guests. Students of the school also visited the

event. Blind students presented Kalam-e-Iqbal. Later on, students of OD-IX semester screened their documentary on blind people revolving around their visit to Al-Faisal blind school. Guests expressed their views regarding World Sight Day. An awareness walk took place at the end of the ceremony.

World Pharmacist day was observed on 15th October 2015. Mudassir Ahmed, student of School of Pharmacy was the stage secretary.Dr Hafiz Muhammad Waqas Head School of Pharmacy spoke on various aspects of pharmacist’s day. He gave an introduction about the profession of pharmacy and its role in the society.Prof Dr Faqir Hussain Dean Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences welcomed the guest speakers. He enlightened the students on the history of pharmacy, knowledge about drugs and scope of pharmacists in other countries.Guest speaker Dr Sidra Andleeb Head Clinical Pharmacy, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center delivered a presentation and highlighted the working methodology of SKMCH. She also briefed about the internships being offered to the students. Dr Kiran Pharmacist, palliative care division at SKMCH explained the complete procedure of diagnosis and treatment of

diseases and management of patient therapy. Guest speaker Dr Sajid Adrees Product Manager, Ferozsons introduced the students to the horizon of Pharma industry as a career opportunity. Chief Guest Dr Abdul Majeed Rector The University of Faisalabad expressed his appreciation and gratitude towards the guests and organizing committee. Iqbal Day was observed on 3rd November 2015. Prof Dr Asif Awan, Chairman Department of Urdu, GC University Faisalabad was the guest speaker, who delivered a very

thought provoking and inspiring lecture on “Iqbal and Quran”. Mr Saleem Kayani Director Press and Publication was the chief guest. The focus of Dr Asif Awan’s lecture was on Iqbal’s firm belief in Allah’s supremacy and the glorious heights which Muslims can attain if they comply with the commandments of Allah as laid down in the holy Quran and follow the footsteps of Holy Prophet (PBUH) the best role model for all people for all times to come.

On the occasion of ‘World Osteoporosis Day’ an awareness seminar was conducted on 20th October in Auditorium of Madinah Teaching Hospital. In his presentation, Assistant Prof Dr Usama Jafar outlined the importance of nutrition for bone health throughout all stages of life. Osteoporosis is characterized by diminution of bone mass, weakening of bone structure and increasing the risk of fracture. Osteoporosis has become a major public health problem worldwide, he added. In Pakistan, majority of people are not getting adequate amounts of calcium, vitamin D and protein. Consequently, about 9.9 million people in Pakistan have osteoporosis of which 7.2 million are women. Dr Usama put the spotlight on the importance

of bone-healthy nutrition from early life to adulthood. He also highlighted the preventive measures, diagnosis and treatment in this regard. Prof Dr Kaleem Shaukat, HoD Orthopedics and Prof Dr Khalid Mehmood Yahya, HoD Medicine also spoke on the occasion.

Initiated by UNESCO, World Teachers’ Day is observed in more than 100 countries. This day represents an acknowledgement for the efforts of the teachers in creating awareness and understanding in the vital fields of knowledge and character building, which are instrumental in creating sustainable societies. Character Building Society TUF observed this day on 5th October 2015. A short documentary was presented in order to portray the role of teachers in students’ life. Chief Guest Dr Abdul Majeed shared his valuable experiences about the teacher-taught relationship.

The independent FM stations operating in Pakistan are involved in diversified activities ranging from entertainment, sports, health and education etc.The University of Faisalabad stresses on the development of young minds through a number of sources. It aims to utilize all available resources in order to achieve optimal results. Being seized of the importance of the research for students, TUFIANS FM 96.6 was started a year ago on 9th October 2014 with the commitment of providing quality education to students.An event to mark the first anniversary of FM96.6 was arranged on 9th October 2015. Rector Dr Abdul Majeed along with Deputy Registrar Col (R) Abid Mustaq, Director

Press and Publication Mr Saleem Kayani and other faculty members visited the radio station. The efforts in providing this valuable research facilitation service to the students and researchers were appreciated by all.

Mehfil-e Mushaera on “Manaqab-e- Ehl-e-Baet (Alaehim-us-salam)” was organized on October 21, 2015.Renowned poetesses Dr Saeeda Resham, Ms Naseem Sehraee, Mrs Gulfam Naqvi, Mrs Ambreen Ashar, Sajida Hashimi, Farhat Shehzad, Prof Razia Sajjad, Sameena Raees, Mrs Bushra Naz, Dr Ansa Saeed Ahmed and Rubina Kausar presented Manaqib and paid rich tributes to Hazrat Imam Hussain (Alaeh-i-ssalaam) and Ehl-e-Baet (Alaehim-i-ssalaam) on their sacrifices rendered to restore the integrity of Islam.

School of Arabic and Islamic Studies-TUF also arranged a Mushaera on the Youm-e-Shahadat of Hazrat Imam Hussain (Alaeh-i-ssalam). Prominent poets attended the event and offered munaqib. The poets included Professor Hassan Askari Kazmi ,Qaem Naqvi ,Kausar Ali, Muhamamd Afzal Khaksaar ,Riaz Ahmad Qadri, Sarwar Khan Sarwar, Dr Professor Ghulam Murtaza Aatir, Meerza Amjad Raazi, Muhammad Lateef Sajid, Manzoor Saqib, Ahmad Shahbaz Khawar, Saghar Shahzad and Bismal Shamsi.The event culminated with Drood o Salam and Dua.

Saeed Ul Hassan Shah dwelt at length on the lofty traits of the personality of Hazrat Umar Farooq (Razi Allah Ta’ala Anho), his sterling services to Islam, and the ordeals he had to face. Audience sat spell bound and were moved to tears. Dr Abdul Majeed was the chief guest.

Religious Society, TUF organized all Faisalabad Inter Universities and Degree Colleges quiz competition on October 15, 2015 in commemoration of renowned personalities of Islamic history. Different universities and colleges from Faisalabad participated in the competition with excellent preparation and enthusiasm. Prof Dr Abdul Majeed, Rector TUF graced the event as chief guest. Prof Dr Haji Muhammad Aslam from UMDC and Ms Shahana,

Assistant Professor Department of Arabic, Government College Gulistan Colony Faisalabad were the judges of the competition. University of Education, Samanabad, GC University for Women, Madina Town and Fatima Jinnah Degree College won the first , second and third positions respectively. Department of Islamic Studies TUF arranged a seminar on the the wisal of Shiekh Bahao-uddin Zakria Multani (Rehmat-Ullah Alaih). Rector Dr Abdul Majeed was the chief guest.Speaker Dr Azfaar Haider Shah in his keynote address dilated upon the lofty teachings of this saintly figure of his times. The services rendered by Shiekh Bahao-uddin Zakria (Rehmat-Ullah Alaih) for the cause of Islam and education of Muslims were highlighted in detail, opening new vistas of vision for the audience.

An orientation and welcome program was conducted for the first semester students of The University of Faisalabad on October 26, 2015.Ms Zahida Maqbool, Additional Registrar informed the new TUFIANS about The University of Faisalabad and other welfare projects of the Madinah Foundation. She said that the University with highly qualified and experienced faculty and state of the art infrastructure is providing quality education to students in an enviable environment. She also stated that co curricular activities are also given due importance in the University. Prof Dr Faqir Hussain, Dean Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences highlighted the importance of different courses being offered in the university. Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed, Dean Faculty of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences emphasized the importance of education and the cardinal role it plays in their future. Prof Muhammad Ishfaq Additional Registrar explained the system of GPA and how new students can cope up

with the new challenges they are about to face. Mr Hamid Nawaz Controller Examinations reviewed the examination system in the university and said that students need to work on regular basis in order to come out with flying colors. Mr Saleem Kayani Director Press and Publication elucidated about the working and value of press and publication department. He urged the students for an optimal utilization of their talents regarding co curricular activities. The message was shared with the help of especially designed documentaries and other media material. Mr Umar Farooq Chief Librarian shared the strength of the library resources available at the university.This orientation session was attended by the first semester students along with their parents. Later, the students and parents visited the library, labs and other academic facilities provided in the Campus. Rector Dr Abdul Majeed in his address stressed on the fact that young minds must pay proper attention to their education in order to derive optimum dividends from their capabilities.

Rector Prof Dr Abdul Majeed represented The University of Faisalabad in an international conference on “Journey through Print to Digital Information and Beyond” at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) This conference brought together the international speakers from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and United States and about 450 participants from Pakistan. The conference was inaugurated by the Education Minister Rana Mashhood

Ahmad Khan. Five Vice Chancellors from public and private universities addressed the audience. The Conference Chair of the South Asian Libraries Conference (SALC) Dr Muhammad Ramzan established four think tanks for the librarians in South Asia. TUF is honored to be a member of the think tank on “Developing Libraries for 21st Century.” The Chief Librarian Mr Umar Farooq is representing TUF in the think tank.

A ceremony to award scholarships to the students of different disciplines was held in Saleem campus on

October 15, 2015. Prof Dr Abdul Majeed, Rector, TUF awarded scholarships to 72 brilliant students from different departments. Prior to this, scholarships were awarded to 30 other students as well.

Noor-e-Siddiq-e-Akbar Library organized an exhibition of new books and The University of Faisalabad publications. The students visited the exhibition and showed their interest particularly in three new books by Rauf Klasra. They

also liked the biography “Bitter and Sweet” by Sirajuddin Aziz. Among TUF publications, they appreciated the titles “In the Name of the Youth of the 21st Century” and “Manaqab-e-Ehl-e-Baet.”

The University of Faisalabad Libraries organized a workshop on “eLibraryUSA: Resources for Teachers” for the University Cambridge School (UCS) on November 28, 2015. A group of 35 teachers learnt about the available resources in eLibraryUSA for teaching the children. They

found the resources like American English, BookFlix, Britannica for Children, and National Geographic for Kids valuable for their students. This hands-on training also empowered the school teachers with the online searching skills.

UMDC Faculty Members Attend AEME Conference

“DENGUE HAS BECOME A MAJOR INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERN”

University Medical & Dental College delegation attended National Conference organized by Association for Excellence in Medical Education (AEME) held in Punjab Medical College Faisalabad on 14th and 15th of November 2015. Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences TUF addressed the inaugural session of the conference.Six research papers were presented in this conference by UMDC faculty.1. “Are we prepared for a curriculum change? Department of Community Medicine, UMDC, organized an awareness seminar on “Prevention of Dengue Fever” in The University of Faisalabad on October 22, 2015. Prof Dr Zahid Masood, HOD Community Medicine, in his address informed the audience that Dengue is the most common mosquito-borne viral disease of humans that in recent years has become a major international public health concern. Globally, 2.5 billion people live in areas where dengue viruses can be transmitted. Dengue mosquito breeds on clean water, so collection of such water in nearby living spaces should be avoided. We should cover our body parts especially at ‘Dawn and Dusk’ and apply mosquito repellents. Queries and myths of students associated with this disease were answered. Flyers containing preventive information of dengue fever were distributed among students.

Free Dental Camps by Dental Clinics MTHMadinah Foundation in keeping with its tradition of its philanthropic activities, maintains its support in providing education and health care facilities to underprivileged community. Dental Clinics of Madinah Teaching Hospital has launched Oral Health Program from November 10, with collaboration of EDO Health. Free dental camps have been set up at different Healthcare Centers in different villages surrounding Faisalabad. The camp activities were organized by a team of expert dentists from MTH with BDS students of UMDC under the supervision of Prof Dr Syed Akhtar Hussain Bokhari Principal (Dental Section) UMDC.

A sizeable number of patients, particularly children and pregnant women are being screened, free dental checkups and basic dental treatment has been provided free of cost. Some patients with severe complexities are issued free Health Cards and given appointments at Madinah Teaching Hospital for further treatment. The activity will help the community in educating and raising awareness on oral hygienic problems for better health care. Dental Clinics, MTH will continue to provide this dental care facility in free camps till last week of December.

Visit of Mr Christiaan Robert Maas Senior Expert, PUM, NetherlandMr Christiaan Robert Maas visited Madinah Teaching Hospital from October 10 to 25, 2015. Main purpose of his visit was to analyse in detail the technical need of hospital in respect of staff, equipment and expertise, by improving hospital management with the help of health care experience from various Dutch hospitals. Dr Dimple Mustafa, Additional Medical Superintendent conducted the visit and gave a comprehensive presentation on the hospital and showed all departmental working in detail.

Mr Christiaan Robert was impressed by huge organization of Madinah Foundation, especially with the generosity of Chairman BOG Mian Muhammad Hanif (SI). He also appreciated that MTH is working with great missionary spirit towards patients free of cost. He committed for provision of technical support by the Hospitals from Netherland. The guest was presented with memento by Prof Dr A G Rehan, Medical Director.

The University of Faisalabad

School of Rehabilitation Sciences, conducted Research Thesis Viva of DPT Final semester students on October 13, 2015. A total of 17 groups presented their research work in front of internal and external examiners. Each group was given 15 minutes for presentation followed by a question - answer session. Rector Prof Dr Abdul Majeed, TUF in his concluding remarks lauded the efforts of the students.
