ANNOUNCEMENTS

What inspires you?

Being able to bring smiles and happiness to seniors. Introducing them to games and experiences which they may never get to know. Even simple experiences like bringing them to Changi Airport and having tea at the kopitiam can bring pleasure to some seniors who share that they have “not been to the airport for more than 20 years”.

What are the strengths or attributes you have gained through the years of working for Lions Befrienders?

To put into practice what I preach, that is to be adaptable and live without regrets. I have also learnt to worry less and let go of anger and unhappiness which makes me a better person to live with (I will probably have to confirm this with my husband and children, haha). It also helps me give better support to seniors including my own family members through the knowledge acquired.

How is what you do feeding your passion?

I am glad that I have come on board early to work in the elderly sector instead of waiting until I retire as I would have missed out on the fun and added joy to my life.

Ms Joan Lee, Assistant Divisional Director of the Community Outreach Service received her 15-year long service award last year. She shares her thoughts over the years of serving with and for the seniors!

CONGRATULATIONS TO JOAN, OUR LONGEST SERVING COLLEAGUE!

“A cheerful giver, Joan brightens and

uplifts the spirit of our seniors. Her

sunny disposition coupled with her 15

years of service is definitely an asset

to LB. We are indeed blessed to have

her in our midst.”

PDG David Lee

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ROBOT EXERCISE COACHES AT OUR SENIOR ACTIVITY CENTRES

Having become a familiar and welcomed fixture to our seniors at Mei Ling Senior Activity Centre (SAC) for the past year while it was on trial, we are delighted to officially acquire two sets of Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Robot Exercise Coach for our SACs. This was made possible with the Social Innovation grant provided by the Infocomm Development

Authority of Singapore (IDA).

In line with the government’s Smart Nation plan, we hope this would be an innovative way to ease technology into our seniors’ lives in a safe environment with staff guidance. The robotic exercise coach that can teach seniors simple exercise moves also includes real-time gesture recognition and correction in one-on-one exercise mode. Another feature is voice interaction in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Thank you, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, and the Ministry of Social and Family Development, for partnering with us, to make this project possible.

INAUGURAL LIONS CHARITY SHOW 2016

EMPOWERING THE COMMUNITY

Too often, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is seen as just another source of pressure or passing fad. But as customers, employees, suppliers—and, indeed, society at large—place increasing importance on CSR,

some leaders have started to look at it as a creative opportunity to fundamentally strengthen their businesses while contributing to society at the same time. They view CSR as central to their overall strategies, helping them to creatively address key business issues.

One of the most direct and effective ways a corporation can support charities in their cause is to make a donation. We caught up with some of the biggest donors of our inaugural Lions Charity Show and asked them for their insights!

The Lions Club of Singapore Nanyang (LCS Nanyang) has always been a strong supporter and partner in the work that Lions Befrienders (LB) does, and their strength in fundraising and organising events for seniors has enabled many to step

out of their homes and remain engaged in the community.

The club’s first foray into philanthropy began with annual donations to Lions Home For The Elders (LHE), which later grew to include LB. For the past 10 years, the club members themselves have enjoyed carrying out the many community projects for the seniors of both LB and LHE.

When asked how they would describe LB to others, LCS Nanyang spokesperson Lion William Loh said, “LB is championing a very honourable cause. Taking care of thousands of vulnerable seniors is a huge challenge. The volunteers have helped to keep our lonely seniors company. We need more volunteers to join us as the population is ageing and more seniors need befrienders to alleviate their loneliness.”

Keen to promote the spirit of volunteerism to future generations, the club hopes to recruit more young members to join them in organising different activities to engage the lonely seniors. Family members and friends are also welcome to join them as volunteers.

Mr Tony Foo, CEO of Qian Xi Group said: “I remember my first few donations went to schools and clan associations. Subsequently, I realised that I would like to help needy students and low income families.” He went on to share that he sincerely hopes that these students grow up to be volunteers and give back to society. “My wish is to see more people caring and sharing with the vulnerable and needy. Everyone should do their little bit to make this world a better place for all. If one is fortunate to have a decent life, then one must give a helping hand to the less fortunate.”

BENEFITS OF SUNLIGHT

What is light to us? What comes to our mind when we hear of or see light? Have

we taken light for granted? Do we know how light can impact our life and affect our future?

All of us probably know that physical light has always been an important part of our life, no matter where it comes from. It may come from various forms or sources, such as the Sun, fluorescent lamp, candle, bulb, firefly, etc. We all need light, even ‘no light’ at times, is important.

Light in the form of direct sunlight absorbed through our skin produces Vitamin D and has proved to be more important to our health than previous findings

help with the Circadian Rhythm – Diurnal Cycle of a person. Circadian Rhythm is important to our health and especially so to the older adults. Disturbance of the Circadian Rhythm, i.e. resulting in sleep disorder or disturbance, can cause immune dysfunction, cognitive and functional deterioration, depression, increase mortality and cardiovascular issues. (Brawley, 2006)

Evidence has been found that there are many benefits of being exposed to safe early morning or late afternoon sunlight. A short exposure period between 15 to 20 minutes a day will provide sufficient Vitamin D for an elderly. Darkness also plays an important part in an elderly’s daily life. During their sleeping hours at night, it should be pitch dark. Such exposure to natural light in the day and total darkness in the night when elderly sleep will lead to improvements in their sleep and reduce the impact of depression if they suffer from it. (Brawley, 2006)

by scientists. Vitamin D not only assists in absorbing calcium in our body to strengthen our bones but also protects us against other illnesses such as rheumotoid arthritis, heart disease, stroke, and reduces the risk of cancers of the breast, prostate, colon and skin (melatonin), just to name some. It lowers blood pressure through production of nitric oxide. (Brawley, 2006; Mercola, 2013; Mercola, 2015)

As sunlight stimulates, enhances and regulates our physical health, a safe amount of morning sun exposure over a short period will assist to reset our biological clocks – Circadian Rhythm. Research findings show that sunlight is a mood enhancer, and the presence of daylight does

(Brawley,2006; Mercola,2013; Mercola, 2015)

(Brawley, 2006)
