UMS is perhaps the only university in the country with 2 on-campus hatcheries equipped with full range of system components comprising broodfish management, larval and juvenile rearing, live feed and artificial feed productionsand specialized laboratories for testing water quality, diseases, and preserving and fertilizing games from fish stocks induced to spawn.

AQUACULTURE ENTREPRENERESHIP

Aquaculture is an applied science. Defined as the cultivation of aquatic plants and animals in a controlled environment.

Aquaculture is attractive for entrepreneurs : FAO -Aquaculture is the most fastest growing animal-production industry with hundreds billion dollar industry worldwide.

By understanding the role of aquaculture in producing protein-rich fish for human consumption, we have clearly defined objectives of providing extensive training to students in the real operation and management of hatchery as well as grow-out systems in the Shared Farming course.

SHARED FARMING COURSE

The course curriculum design - combining technical knowledge, entrepreneurship elements and conducive environment has created a quest for lifelong learning and building experience.

In this course, all students are required to conduct and manage their own farms, marketing of their produce and maximizing profit while giving due attention to quality of the product and services.

The Shared Farming course activities is not only sharpens the students technical skills in culturing, harvesting and packaging their respective fish produce but also enhances the student entrepreneurship skills by having good understanding of planning and marketing strategy, examining the demand and supply scenario, calculating operational cost and profit, and communication skills with customers .

Realising the importance of nurturing entrepreneurship skills at young age among the aquaculture students, we created a unique learning and practicing environments that goes beyond the class room and tempts the students to empower themselves with know-how to a level that they feel confident of managing their own production units (STUDENTT PROJECT) in the on-site fish and shrimp hatcheries of UMS and also developing marketing strategies.

To support students' entrepreneurship, we offer facilities and tools required for routine operations, experienced hatchery technician and advisor who render overall supervision in the hatchery

ENTREPRENEURIAL IMPACT ON THE STUDENTS PROJECT OUTCOME

Students are able to commercialize technology, and make full use of their hands-on training and knowledge in smart entrepreneurship that benefits them and contributes to fulfilling the policy objectives of the government.

Student are not only able to produce fish, but capable inintegrating accounting, economics, finance, marketing, and other knowledge-based entrepreneurship disciplines despite graduating from a science background.

Every knowledge and skills learnt and gained are transferred into monetary value. Students managed to earn as high as RM85 K through the well designed curriculum.

Our students are claimed and valued by theindustry as graduates with impressive soft-skills, high team work spirit, precisely indecision making along with critical thinkingand thus often appointed and assigned toplay a significant role in aquaculture businessindustry.

They secured a better job in both local and international markets and always ready to take up any challenges in aquaculture business and ready to contribute significantly to a company.

Self-employment is the climax of the entrepreneurial impacton our students and it is an option which more and more ourgraduates appear to be taking owing to the vast opportunityoffered by the aquaculture industry.

ROLE OF LECTURER IN SUPPORTING THE INSTITUTION’S ENTREPRENEURSHIP VISION AND AGENDA

To be a role model first –working enthusiastically and blend well with students and staffs all the time.

To be a guide – always there to encourage students and let them know mistake is a price to pay but experience gained is more than value worth to celebrate. 18

To take part and be on site - It is more practical to be with the students on site for teaching or coaching to enhance a particular skill-set instead of via text books.

SCALE AND SCOPE OF MONITORING ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Shared Farm as aquaculture fundamental course - In this course, students are required to set up a team , whereby they are trained to culture various fish species in the hatchery. At the same time, students will be trained to market and advertise their products to the local markets.

The scale and scope of monitoring this Shared Farming activities is based on the net profit earned by the Shared Farming groups participated.

Lecture in classroom has become more and more interesting nowadays, with the help of high tech multimedia innovations. During lecture, students were exposed to current issues on aquaculture businesses. For example, emergence of new aquaculture products can drive the growth of economic of the country.

Lecturers usually give out some topics to be discussed in groups to see how far the students can use their critical thinking on the issue given. The students’ performance often monitored through the group presentations, projects, and examinations.

One of the entrepreneurial aspirations is to contribute to the community - Sea ranching programs ; supply of seeds of fish and prawn were given out and release to replenish the wild stocks.

Visits by government and non-government agencies -The visit has made Fish Hatchery, particularly a standard benchmark for aquaculture practice around Malaysia. Moreover, we also receiving students from local and international universities to undergo their practical here.

The business model of SAITO UMS is always driven by the aim to earn profit through selling self-farmed organic fish and later to support their 12 weeks industrial training in Japan and Taiwan.

This goal has always put SAITO UMS in a firm position in delivering all works perfectly to hit the target.

Looking at aspiration as the big-picture goal , SAITO UMS wants to be a role model to the world, particularly to graduates in the university that knowledge and hands-on skills are able to create opportunity and wealth through entrepreneurships.
