BISHOP’S PENfrom the

Summer is finally here! It seemed like it would never arrive. Temperatures kept going up then down, but now the summer season is upon us. Summer is a time for cookouts, vacations, laid back schedules, longer days, and fellowship with family and friends. I encourage you to take time out to vacation, even if it’s a stay-cation. It is very important to relax and allow your mind to recharge. Stay within your budget and plan something fun for you and your family this summer.

There will be lots going on at New Psalmist. In July, we celebrate our church anniversary, host the Kingdom Association of Covenant Pastors Conference, and continue our Choose to Be Great Summer Camp – all while having awesome Sunday worship encounters. Share your faith and invite family and friends to church this summer!

I personally invite you to the Kingdom Association of Covenant Pastors Conference. On that Tuesday night, I will be preaching and would love to see all of you there.

I am excited about what God is doing in the life of New Psalmist and its members. Earlier this year, we held an institute on Dreaming Big Dreams. I pray that each of you have been working toward your dreams. God has given us the blueprint on how to make them happen, so I can hardly wait to hear your testimonies about dreams that have come to fruition. Maybe you are stuck or have given up on your dream, but I encourage you to keep going for it and watch God bless it beyond what you could ever imagine.

Enjoy your summer and I’ll see you in worship every Sunday.

Like 2016, 2017 is flying by! We are in the middle of the year and gearing up for summer. It has been a busy six months at New Psalmist. We are blessed to attend a church where something inspiring is always taking place; there is never a dull moment. We encourage you to take advantage of everything our church offers: Bible study, mid-week worship, choir rehearsal, empowerment classes, and the list goes on – you can find it right here at your church. Don’t hesitate to call the church office to find out information about evening activities or visit www.newpsalmist.org. Also, make sure your contact information is up to date in our Fellowship One database. Church emails are distributed weekly with upcoming events and we want to make sure our members are in the know.

This edition is all about Generations of Discipleship with a focus on Millennials, ages 18-33 and Young Adults ages

34-45, who work hard in God’s kingdom. Recently, both groups celebrated Young Adult Day, and the church could see how on fire they were for the Lord. Our Millennials and Young Adults frequently host events for their age groups that empower them in their Christian walk. If you are in these age groups, read all about how you can become more involved and please spread the word about the M2 and F5 ministries.

This summer is going to be so much fun! We will continue with our Season of Celebration. In July, we’ll celebrate our 118th church anniversary, the Kingdom Association of Covenant Pastors Conference will convene at the church, and Bishop Thomas will begin a new summer sermon series. Don’t miss it! Summers are filled with vacations and cookouts but be sure to feed your souls as well, and commit to coming to church on a regular basis this summer. Watch God blow your mind because of your commitment. Enjoy the magazine and share it with others.

God Bless. Joi Thomas

Generations Discipleship

Two separate ministries at NPBC span two different generations of adults: Millennials and Generation Xers.

THE MILLENNIAL MINISTRY, also known as the M2 MINISTRY includes members aged 18-33 (born 1984-1999).

GENERATION XERS make up the F5 MINISTRY, with members aged 34-45 (born 1972-1983). Both ministries were formed out of the need for more participation from these age groups within the culture of NPBC and to keep up with the changing times.

Rev. Joshua Thomas asked Min. Ryan Turner and Sis. Nickie Tyson to assist in the process of building NPBC’s M2 MINISTRY. The collective hope of the M2 Ministry as it

relates to their future is to be balanced Christians who are unashamedly on fire for God. Min. Ryan said, “It is also our hope to gain as much insight about our Christian journey so we can help individuals overcome the same situations we have faced.”

Millennials are often immersed in a digital world but they want others to know that they are listening and watching everything. They have teachable spirits willing to “soak-up” the wisdom and knowledge of elders. “We stand in solidarity with our elders because we understand that without them, there would be no us,” said Min. Ryan.

The M2 Ministry offers an assortment of activities that help members use their spiritual gifts. Those gifted in the areas

of Helps and Hospitality, specifically in public relations and event planning, serve by coordinating M2 “lit” (that means fun) parties. During M2 Worship Services at NPBC, other ministry members use their gifts to usher in God’s presence and prepare the worship environment for a move of God.

Millennials believe that the best thing about New Psalmist is that it feels like HOME!

The name of the F5 MINISTRY came from the F5 button on a computer keyboard. It means to REFRESH or RELOAD.

Generation Xers Deaven and Sherrie Wood, spouses and co-leaders of the F5 Ministry, said that “we hope to be change agents and the builders of lasting legacies that strengthen

and enrich our communities.” Those in the 34-45 age group understand that change does not happen overnight but by making life better for others, change and strong relationships will come to fruition through the age groups that follow them.

Generation Xers put their best foot forward in all areas of their lives but admit they don’t have everything figured out. The F5 Ministry members appreciate that NPBC has a down-to-earth leader in Bishop Thomas, who can relate to all generations. “We are an eclectic group that isn’t afraid to voice our opinions while also being accepting of others’ perspectives,” said Sherrie.

Sherrie uses her spiritual gift of Exhortation every morning by posting the morning inspiration to the F5 Group’s social media pages. The posts are just a reminder that whatever is happening in daily life, our God is bigger and He will see us through it all if we trust Him. Deaven uses his spiritual gifts of Teaching and Helps to fill in as the facilitator for the F5 Ministry’s weekly Bible Study (100-200 participants) when Rev. Lemmon isn’t available.

The F5 Ministry meets for Bible Study every third Wednesday at NPBC in Room 1035. They meet one Friday a month for “F5 Fridays,” a mix of fun social outings and community service activities offsite.

The F5 Ministry is open to non-NPBC members. “Our goal is to encourage others to have a closer relationship with Jesus Christ no matter where they worship,” said the Woods. If you’re interested in joining the F5 Ministry, contact Rev. Monique Lemmon at  [email protected]  or Sherrie Wood at [email protected].

THE BEST ADVICE FROM GENERATION XERS TO MILLENNIALS:

As long as you have breath you have time to get it right. You are never too far gone for God.

The age group of the F5 Ministry at NPBC is 34-45 years old. I was amazed at how blind I was to the obvious connection regarding this group; they relate to every living age group!

F5s were raised by Baby Boomers such as myself, who have grandparents of the World War II generation. They were raised hearing stories of segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, Motown, black and white television and life before high technology. They are the parents and grandparents of today’s youth. They know apps, Twitter, banking by smartphones, Lil Yachte and Party Next Door (whoever that is!). They are entering their prime earning years, taking over the halls of political power, and contributing to ministry as young giants of the gospel: pastors, musicians, educators, movement leaders, and more. At New Psalmist, they even conduct Bible studies online.

The fruits of Godly living can easily be seen and demonstrated in the F5 generation. When you see a person in the F5 age group lovingly interact with

their parents and grandparents, you see Exodus 20:12 (NIV) - “Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” When you see an F5 person nurturing and guiding their children and grandchildren, you see Ephesians 6:4 (NIV) - “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

In 1 Tim 3:1-13 (NIV), the Apostle Paul teaches Timothy about qualifications for overseers in ministry. When you see F5-aged ministers, Bible teachers, ushers, MOCS, ministry leaders, etc., you are seeing the fruit of these Biblical instructions.

They may not get the praise and attention of other age groups, but where would this world be without the so-called, Generation X? Praise God.

The Forgotten Group

Who or what is the F5 Ministry?  You may see these members singing praises of Zion with colorfully coordinated attire or greeting members at the door on Sunday.  You may see F5 members hastily making tracks down the aisles for the best shots of the congregation on camera.   If you look into the balcony area, a good number of members are running the communications and graphics during services, or assisting with youth fellowships and worship services.

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a

heart of wisdom.” – Psalm 90:12 (NIV)

By: Jabari Walker

At a typical 9:30 am service, the church is filled with thousands of people representing all age groups.  However, according to data from Infellowship, the church’s database, the largest population of members is the age group 34-45, the F5 group!  One of the unique factors of this ministry is that the age group spans across two generations – Generation X and the Millennial generation.   Most of the F5 category belongs to Generation X, a cohort sandwiched between the

The Forgotten Group

Baby Boomers and the Millennials and therefore an intermediary between the two groups on many factors like social media use.   In essence, F5 is the force that bridges the gap between the youth and young adult population (Millennials), with the middle age/senior populations.   I also belong to this group.  We are the ones with new families and young children, aging parents, hitting the peak of our careers, while still finding time to give back in God’s house.

Generation X is also known to be a generation of innovation and entrepreneurism and contributors of Google, Amazon, and YouTube, for example. Likewise, Millennials are the most technologically savvy.  This may explain why the communications ministry has a large number of F5 members such as 3-year member, Bro. Robert Owens, Jr., a camera technician who operates the video camera about twice a month.  Robert joined the communications ministry because he had prior experience in that profession and he felt the necessity to be involved in helping to spread the gospel while being a part of a dynamic church. He says there are about 8 of his age cohorts in this ministry.

Bro. Deaven Wood, co-leader of the F5 Ministry, is a minister in training and also holds positions within the Communications Ministry.   Deaven indicates the biggest challenge for his fellow F5 peers is balancing time and effort between careers, family and friends, spouses, and children while being active in Ministry.   Deaven believes F5 sees the

need and importance of background work in Ministry and are willing to use our skills and abilities behind the scenes to cultivate ministry that is innovative and fresh.  Deaven’s theory supports what research shows of this generation. In a 2008 book, author Jeff Gordinier describes Generation X as a “dark horse demographic” which doesn’t seek the limelight and is more likely to “just quietly do their thing.”

According to Deaven, while F5 members serve in the music ministry, in hospitality, as ushers and MOCS, there are large numbers in the Communications Ministry, Discipleship facilitators, and working with the Youth Ministry.   Therefore, F5 is certainly not a forgotten group. It is the group primarily participating in support ministries that make Sunday service awesome.   It is a group of members balancing life with serving the Kingdom and working behind the scenes as the driving force that helps the other age groups of the church shine in the spotlight, so that we can all work to give glory to our God.

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)

Debt Overwhelming

MillennialsThe biggest issue keeping our Millennials up at night is debt, according to the latest survey and article by Lincoln Financial Group, a leading Financial Services and Investment Company. The firm found that this is an issue for 48% of respondents in that age group; meanwhile, 44% of Generation Xers and 58% of Baby Boomers reported their biggest financial issue was healthcare expenses.

According to the research,  student loan debt  (54%) is Millennials’ top concern. Seventy percent of those who are currently paying off their student loans say they are not managing the process very well.

The study showed that the 18- to 34-year-olds surveyed are facing a number of other challenges when it comes to planning their financial future: Only 33% have a retirement account versus 48% of the general population. Immediate payments make it hard for 74% to put money into retirement. Four out of five say they are saving for other things like a new car or house instead of retirement. More than half (60%) say they dread looking at or talking about their personal finances. Only 31% of Millennials have life insurance, versus 49% of the general population.

The study found that nearly three quarters of Millennials are finding it hard to balance living

and planning for the future. It has been difficult for Millennials to purchase their first home even with the limited government programs that can help the first-time home buyer. The age group is in need of professional help with financial planning and development of strategies in meeting their financial goals.

New Psalmist Baptist Church, because of our Pastor’s vision, has developed a team of experienced professionals through our Financial Academy Ministry that can assist our Millennials, Generation Xers, Baby Boomers and other members that are in need with education and proven strategies to help meet their financial goals. Classes are offered in various financial disciplines in our spring and fall semesters. It is important that we help our talented Millennials, up and coming Generation Xers and other members as they cope with the challenges they are faced with in meeting their financial goals. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by in getting the assistance you need right in New Psalmist Baptist Church. Visit www.newpsalmist.org and click on Financial Academy on the scroll bar to learn more and enroll.

At New Psalmist Baptist Church, Bishop Thomas is committed to ensuring that each generation of its members has a voice. The M2 Ministry is the voice of the Millennial generation and they are being heard. I discussed the M2 Ministry with Min. Ryan Turner, who is not only a M2 Ministry advisor but the founder and executive director of the AKOBEN Foundation, Inc., a Baltimore organization that promotes literacy and preserves communities. Min. Turner’s focus is on early childhood education and closing the achievement gap in urban and under-served communities by making sure kids are reading on proper levels.

Here’s Min. Turner’s take on the Millennial generation and following their dreams and building legacies of excellence.

EDM: What is the M2 Ministry at New Psalmist Baptist Church? Minister Turner: The M2 Ministry is a ministry of Millennials of the church who are poised to make their mark not only in the church but in society as well. They look to follow their dreams without compromise and spread their wings. They are also about creating their own opportunities and doing what’s in their hearts. The M2’ers seek to follow their passion versus working a traditional 9 to 5.

EDM: You were one of the Young Adult/M2 Generation speakers at NPBC’s Churchwide Institute, what did you talk to them about?Minister Turner: I spoke to them about following their dreams and walking in their passion. To follow dreams, they must sacrifice something and be willing to grind for it. I talked with them about having a vision, strategizing, and understanding that without a vision and strategy, they cannot be successful.

EDM: How does/has the church allowed the M2 Ministry to have their own voice within the church?Minister Turner: Well, being a New Psalmist baby, I have seen first-hand how the church has lots of activities and events that promote fellowship and opportunities – not only to become involved in ministry, but to foster dreams and ensure this generation’s legacy at New Psalmist. Our church is a nurturing environment that pushes Millennials to believe in themselves and achieve anything they set their minds to. New Psalmist is supportive of their endeavors and committed to pouring God’s word into them, which sets them up for success.

EDM: Thank you for your time and all that you are doing for the church.Minister Turner: You are welcome and thank you!

F5 SOCIAL MEDIA:Maintaining Connections

Did you know that the F5 Ministry at New Psalmist manages its own Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages? This ministry is primarily for those born between 1972-1983, and are often called, Generation Xers. I interviewed Mrs. Sherrie Wood, co-leader of the F5 Ministry, who provided a plethora of details about their ministry. It is a very active group with committed and dedicated leaders.

The F5 Ministry’s Facebook Page was created approximately 2 ½ years ago. Followers from around the country (as far as Seoul Korea, Texas, and Chicago) participate every Wednesday from 7:00 - 8:00 pm on Facebook Live, which is live video streaming. To join the group, go to Facebook and search for TheF5Group.

Rev. Monique Lemmon opens live streaming with a prayer, and then people share comments about various

religious topics based on Bible verses that are presented for discussion. Everyone is welcome and all voices are heard even though there are varied perspectives. The conversations help each other to grow in the word of God, and the sharing of information helps people as they walk their spiritual path.

The F5 Ministry’s Instagram Page is used to share photos, videos and messages of church events, scriptures, and other spiritually-related content. If someone posts a comment, one of the F5 ministry leaders is alerted and then responds to the comment. Join @thef5group on Instagram!

The F5 Ministry’s Twitter Page is used to post and interact with messages “tweets” about various Bible verses intended to minister to people every day, which gives them support and helps build individuals up as we face

16

Maintaining Connectionsuncertainties about life. We can learn to grow and love each other as Jesus loves us, and speak the truth. The ministry encourages people to take the time to meditate on God’s word, listen to His voice and minister like Jesus. Follow @TheF5Group on Twitter!

Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is,

Christ. Ephesians 4:15 (NIV)

The F5 Ministry is a family environment that has formed accountability partners. Members look out for each other and take notice when a person has not been seen in church. They stay in contact with one another to make sure they are alright and not sick or going through something. The ministry is open to all individuals between ages 34-45 or who feel called to serve in this ministry.

The 34-45 age group has very busy lives. The F5 Ministry has created a strong social media following of Generation Xers as well as others, to keep people connected to the wonders and praises of God while on the go.

“We can learn to grow and love each other as Jesus loves us, and speak the truth.”

NPBC members dream big dreams! The 2017 churchwide institute included free classes for every age and stage of discipleship. Classes were held two days with offerings in the morning and evening on topics such as church history; church hymns as an important element of worship; maximizing God-given gifts; how to share the gospel; Medicare information; dreaming big for senior citizens and how they are still free to dream; authentic manhood and tools to help men achieve dreams; young adults and making time to dream; millennials and envisioning dreams; teen dreams and relationships; and kids and what it means to dream. All attendees walked away more equipped to make their dreams come true.

Children participated in an afternoon of fun, food, laughter and fellowship: potato sack, tug of war, egg races, DJ, line dancing, face painting, balloon twister, Easter egg hunting and even games and activities for adults. Everyone enjoyed an awesome day in the Lord!
