NC State’s Northeast Leadership Academy (NELA) presents the Teachers Leading Change: New Pathways for Empowered Teachers and Empowered Leaders conference to examine new ways to think about how to empower teachers and maximize teacher leadership. Conversations with Rick Hess from the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) on Cage Busting Teachers and Bryan Hassel from Public Impact on Opportunity Culture/Project LIFT will frame the discussion. Other sessions will provide opportunities for in-depth exploration of the topic with teacher leaders, principals, key legislators, and directors of philanthropic organizations as well as state-level education stakeholders. Participants will: � Develop and deepen a shared understanding of how teacher leadership can result in tangible changes for schools and communities. � Develop or refine a plan for using collective leadership in schools and communities. � Meet and interact with high-quality leaders from across NC and build a foundation of relationships that can be transformed into a state

Keynote Presenters:
Frederick “Rick” Hess
Frederick M. Hess studies K-12 and higher education issues. His books include Cage-Busting Teachers, Cage-Busting Leadership, Breakthrough Leadership in the Digital Age, The Same Thing Over and Over, Education Unbound, Common Sense School Reform, Revolution at the Margins, and Spinning Wheels. He is also the author of the popular Education Week blog, “Rick Hess Straight Up,” and is a regular contributor to The Hill. He has edited widely cited volumes on the Common Core, the role of for-profits in education, education philanthropy, school costs and productivity, the impact of education research, and No Child Left Behind. Hess serves as executive editor of Education Next, as lead faculty member for the Rice Education Entrepreneurship Program, and on the review board for the Broad Prize for Public Charter Schools. He also serves on the boards of directors of the National Association of Charter School Authorizers and 4.0 SCHOOLS. A former high school social studies teacher, he teaches or has taught at the University of Virginia, the University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University, Rice University and Harvard University. He holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Government, as well as a M.Ed. in Teaching and Curriculum, from Harvard University. Bryan Hassel
Bryan Hassel is Co-Director of Public Impact. He consults nationally with leading public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and foundations working for dramatic improvements in K–12 education. He is a recognized expert on charter schools, school turnarounds, education entrepreneurship, and teacher and leader policy. His work has appeared in Education Next, Education Week, and numerous other publications; he blogs for Education Next and is a frequent guest blogger on other forums, such as Education Week. He was named to the spring 2015 class of the Pahara-Aspen Education Fellows Program, designed to support exceptional leaders reimagining U.S. public schools. Dr. Hassel received his Ph.D. in public policy from Harvard University and his master’s degree in politics from Oxford University, which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar. He earned his B.A. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which he attended as a Morehead Scholar. He is a senior research affiliate with the Center on Reinventing Public Education.
