2 Chapter 1 Quick-start Design intent 2

Chapter SummaryEMpower is a software program that processes, displays, and exports TDEM data acquired with Phoenix V8 and RXU receivers. This chapter briefly explains the design intent of the program, lists the features available, and provides brief instructions to accomplish the most common user goals.

Design intentEMpower is designed to allow you to easily build, edit, and maintain a database of TDEM recordings as you conduct a survey or work with existing data.

The design provides three views into the same information: a Map view for geographic visualization, a Time Line for chronological visualization, and a Graphs view for data visualization. (See Fig. 1 on page 4.) Actions you take in one of the three views are reflected immediately in the other two views.

The Time Line occupies the top of the program window below the menu bar. The Map view and Graphs view share the remainder of the window. These three areas can be resized by dragging the borders that separate them.

Many operations can be performed in any of the three views. For example, you can edit or delete a recording by right-clicking it in the Map, on the Time Line, or in the legend of the Graphs. A context menu appears from which you can select the commands.

The Map viewThe Map view occupies the lower left portion of the program window. It contains a grid of UTM co-ordinates and a series of tools in a column at the left.

The Map view is intended to be the main means for adding recordings to the database—simply drag the icon of a CompactFlash card or a folder (or even a single file) onto the Map, and EMpower copies the data and supporting files (calibrations, etc.) into the database. The recordings are then displayed on the Map and on the Time Line.

The Map view also provides one of the main ways to select recordings in order to see the data in the Graphs view. (The Time Line provides the other way to select recordings.) Simply click an individual recording or drag a rectangle to enclose several recordings, and EMpower displays the data in the Graphs view.

Page 8: EMpower User Guide v.1 - Phoenix Geophysics · EMpower User Guide Version 1.0 May 2013 ... EMpower is a software program that processes, displays, ... you may want to examine or edit

3 Chapter 1 Quick-start The Time Line 3

The Time LineThe Time Line occupies the full width of the top of the program window below the menu bar. It displays a horizontal bar to represent each recording, in chronological order from left to right.

You can display all the recordings acquired by a single receiver on one horizontal line, or you can expand the Time Line to display each recording on its own horizontal line.

You can zoom the Time Line by rotating the mouse wheel. Restore the zoom to 100% by double-clicking the Time Line.

The Time Line provides one of the main ways to select recordings in order to see the data in the Graphs view. (The Map provides the other way to select recordings.) Simply click an individual recording to select it, and optionally Ctrl + click to select additional recordings. EMpower displays the data in the Graphs view and draws a selection rectangle on the Map.

When a single recording has been selected, you can scroll the selection chronologically through the other recordings by clicking the navigation controls at the left of the Time Line. You can also use the left and right arrow keys to scroll. Both the Map and Graphs views respond by displaying the location and data of the corresponding recordings as you scroll.

The Graphs viewThe Graphs view consists of several tabs, each of which displays the data of selected recordings in a different manner. You can view decay and resistivity curves and Bostick transformations. You can also view waveforms as saved by the receiver (“raw waveforms”) and waveforms stacked by EMpower (“processed waveforms”).

The legend of the Graphs view provides a means of distinguishing recordings when several recordings are selected. Simply point to the legend entry of a curve, and EMpower identifies the recording on the Map and Time Line by increasing the size of the corresponding icon or time-line bar. The curve itself changes from a solid line to a dotted line.

6 Chapter 1 Quick-start Using EMpower effectively 6

Using EMpower effectivelyThe four main tasks when using EMpower are:

1. Adding data to the database.

2. Discarding all but the best recording at each site.

3. Exporting the data for interpretation.

Additionally, you may want to examine or edit certain details of a recording, such as transmitter or receiver configuration.

EMpower provides methods and tools to help you accomplish these tasks easily, as described in this section.

Adding data to the databaseAlthough you can add data by using menu commands, the easiest way is to simply take the CompactFlash (CF) card from the receiver and install it in your computer; then drag the CF card icon from Windows Explorer or My Computer onto the Map view of EMpower.

Using the Window Size tool. (F12)

To make it easier to drag icons onto the Map, click the Window Size tool in the Map view (or press F12) to shrink the program

window and reveal more of the computer desktop. Click the tool again to maximize the program window after adding data.

Using the Icons tool. (F7)

Occasionally when you add data to the database, EMpower cannot find supporting files, such as calibration files. EMpower displays coloured icons with white or black “holes” on the Map to indicate these problem recordings. To make them more obvious, activate the Icons tool (or press F7).

Using the Labels tool. (F5)

To control the display of line and site names, click this tool (or press F5).

Discarding all but the best recording at each siteThere are several ways to filter out poor recordings, leaving only the best.

Using the Time Line. You can make quick decisions to discard data by examining the length of the time-line bars on the Time Line. Very short time-line bars indicate recordings that are

Page 12: EMpower User Guide v.1 - Phoenix Geophysics · EMpower User Guide Version 1.0 May 2013 ... EMpower is a software program that processes, displays, ... you may want to examine or edit

7 Chapter 1 Quick-start Discarding all but the best recording at each site 7

unlikely to contain good data. Right-click such time-line bars and delete them.

Using the Map and Graphs views. Select all the recordings at a given site by dragging a rectangle around them on the Map. Examine the data in the Graphs view. Right-click the Graphs legends and delete all but the best recording.

To make this task easier, the context menu includes the command, Keep (Delete others). If you see one curve or transformation that is clearly better than the rest, select this command to quickly discard all but that one recording. Otherwise, simply repeat the Delete command on individual curves as necessary until only the best curve remains.

Using the Select tools. (F2)

The Map view and the Graphs view each have their own Select tool (activated by default). Use this tool on the Map to point to recordings (to display information on them) or to select one or more recordings by clicking or dragging. Use this tool to point to the Graphs legends (to distinguish which curve, recording, and time-line bar are related). Right-click with this tool on either the Map view or Graphs view to display a context menu.

Using the Links tool. (F8)

To visualize the physical locations of receivers and transmitters more easily, activate the Links tool to have EMpower draw an arrow from each receiver recording to the corresponding transmitter (TMR) recording.

Hiding or showing individual curves.

When several recordings are selected and their curves are almost identical, it can be difficult to choose the best. Click the Eye icons to hide or show individual curves, making evaluation easier.

Using the Cluster Expansion tool. (F6)

TDEM surveys usually consist of multiple recordings at each location, because the operators make adjustments for quality control and acquire recordings multiple times. When these recordings are displayed on the Map, they are difficult to distinguish because they all occupy more or less the same position. (GPS error causes some variation.)

To make it easier to distinguish recordings on the Map, click the Cluster Expansion tool (or press F6). When this tool is active, recordings in clusters are displaced away from each other on the Map, with arrows pointing back to their actual locations.

8 Chapter 1 Quick-start Editing recording metadata 8

Using the Zoom tools. (F3)

The Map view and the Graphs view each have their own Zoom tool. Drag with this tool over a cluster of recordings or over one or more curves in order to see them in more detail. Press Shift and click with this tool to undo zooms.

When a view is zoomed other than at 100%, a magnifier icon with a minus-sign appears in the upper left corner of the view. Click this icon to restore the view to 100%.

If your mouse has a scroll wheel, you can also rotate the wheel while pointing to the Map, the Graphs, or the Time Line, to change the zoom level of that view.

Exporting the data for interpretationThe last major task is to export recordings in Universal Sounding Format (USF) or Comma-separated Values format (CSV).

You can export individual recordings or groups of recordings.

To export an individual recording, right-click the recording on the Map, or the time-line bar on the Time Line, or the entry in the Graphs legend. Choose Export from the context menu that appears.

To export groups of recordings, right-click within the selection on the Map or on the Time Line and choose Export from the context menu that appears.

Archiving, backing up, or exporting an entire projectTo archive or back up a project, or to copy an entire project for use with EMpower on another computer, choose the Export command on the File menu. The project is exported to a single file with the extension .phoenix, which you can save in your preferred location.

Editing recording metadataA secondary task you can perform in EMpower is to examine or edit certain metadata about a recording, such as the site name, the operator name, and the transmitted current.

To edit a receiver recording, right-click it in the Map, on the Time Line, or in the legend of the Graphs and choose Edit. The Edit Receiver Details dialog box appears. (See Fig. 2 on page 9.)

26 Chapter 2 Licensing EMpower Requesting licences by e-mail 26

Chapter SummaryPhoenix sells its customers licences to use the EMpower core software and plug-ins. The software does not function until a valid licence code is entered. This chapter explains how to obtain and register a licence code.

Licensing is a two-step process after program installation. The first step is to generate a licence request to send to Phoenix. The second step is to copy the licence code from Phoenix’s reply and enter it in the software. If you do not have access to e-mail, you can also obtain a licence by telephone.

Requesting licences by e-mailEMpower includes a licensing module that generates encoded keys to identify the computer the software is running on. These keys are used by Phoenix to generate a licence code that is unique to that computer.

To request a license for EMpower core software:1. Locate and have ready the Work Order number that was

provided when you purchased EMpower.

2. From the Help menu, choose Licensing.

The Licensing dialog box appears.

2. Call Phoenix at +1 (416) 491-7340 during business hours (09:00 to 17:00 Eastern Time, Monday to Friday). Explain that you are calling to obtain a licence for EMpower, and ask to speak to the Software Support department.

3. Provide to the Support personnel your name, your company’s name, the Work Order number, and the codes at the bottom of the generated Message Text.

Software Support will give you a licence code to type into the Licence Activation box in the Licensing Module.

Activating a licenceTo activate a licence code:1. From the Help menu, choose Licensing.

2. Click either License EMpower Core or License Plugins, according to the type of licence code you have received.

3. In the Licensing Module dialog box, paste (or type) the licence code in the text box at the bottom of the dialog box.

The status box beside the text box indicates whether the licence code you have entered is valid.

4. If the licence code is valid, click Activate Licence.

5. Exit the program and restart EMpower.

The software and plugins licensed are now fully functional.

End-User Licence AgreementDuring software installation, you are required to agree to the End-User Licence.
