AlbumReviews14

Jessie J's 2014 album ‘Sweet Talker’ is basically a collection of songs filled with cameos by American artists as well as several collaborations

with A-list producers which puts her right in the heart of the US Top 40’s.

Moving onto the songs, one of them being a rather bland, ballad-based song called “Sweet Talker” which was rather depressing, and frankly

quite unimpressive; we have all heard the saucy and catchy overplayed song called "Bang Bang" which presented Jessie J alongside with Ariana

Grande, and Nicki Minaj. While it's obvious that Minaj's mile-a-minute rapping and 2014's pop it girl Grande steal the show from Jessie, it still

puts "Bang Bang" and Jessie back on the charts and on the listeners mind. The rest of ‘Sweet Talker’ doesn't quite capitalize on that hit's

sound or momentum, however the second single, "Burnin' Up" signals more towards rap via a cameo by 2 Chainz.

Overall, Jessie’s latest album lacks a clear artistic voice which ends up making it wildly unbalanced, however it just might be flashy enough to

do well.

The Norwegian duo Nico & Vinz deliberately blur cultural and musical boundaries on their 2014 debut album ‘Black Star Elephant’. The pair are more than happy to disregard placing themselves on any one genre and due to this main factor it has appealed to a majority of listeners.

‘Black Star Elephant’s’ rhythms are fairly streamlined and club-ready, although they do an amazing job at energetically syncing the African drums with western dance music quite seamlessly. The duo’s summer global smash single hit "Am I Wrong" did amazingly well and got everyone excited for their debut album.

The song “Miracles” has lyric that play on like an inspirational anthem, along with several songs which have a reggae-pop influence to them which we seem to enjoy. With their hearts in the right place it's hard to totally root against the duo.

Maroon 5’s fifth album ‘V’, maintains the glossy appearance and reveals that their foundation has not been moved. With Levine's

buzzing vocals and passionate delivery which are as earnest as they were on their 2002 debut ‘Songs About Jane’.

Levine has become a master at broadening and twisting words, like how he did with global hit “Maps”, and now "Animals" which has now

been creeping up the charts.

The vibe of most of the songs shifts slightly back to the soulful pop that's remained at Maroon 5's core since the beginning. The band also manages to achieve a delicate balance between the two extremes on, "It Was Always You," "New Love," and "Feelings". But the best moments

on ‘V’ are when they embrace the tuneful, slightly soulful adult contemporary pop band they've always been, as they do on "Sugar”.

Overall a great album, highly recommend to anyone who has previously loved the band!

Annabelle The movie is about the eeriest malevolent doll named "Annabelle", and is set in the 1970’s, about an expecting couple who endure a terrifying night at the hands of invading Manson-like satanic occultists whose blood is spilt all over the already creepy doll, This unfortunate event gave life to the doll and is now trying to murder the couple and their unborn child.

The movie has several drawbacks one of the biggest being that it was directed using cheap digital effects which wasn’t expected as most of us who are from this century are used to watching lo-fi visual scares, especially in the horror movie genre, and clearly "Annabelle" has failed to meet this crucial factor which led it to not do as well in the box office.

The movie’s overall appeal was ruined by dirt-cheap equipment that resulting in a grainer picture quality and jagged movements.

By the end of the movie "Annabelle" goes on towards extended clichés, repetitive scenes and yawn-inducing dialogues but is an overall decent movie.

Dracula Untold Dracula Untold is basically 'Maleficent' except for guys, yet it is a surprisingly entertaining movie. It is quite short and is directed with a lot of verve and imagination such as the black clouds of bats whipping around, stony castles beneath ominous skies. The movie is filled with lots of intensity, and Vlad’s (Evans) role is filled with him glowering, roaring, or screaming. Evan’s most definitely commanded our attention with those angry eyes and his constantly clenched jaw, in fact, we don’t think he ever smiled during the entire movie, as he seemed too busy being tough and haunted. Dracula Untold acted out the role of Dracula perfectly and the entire movie was captivating. That being said, the film didn’t do justice to keep the era and region in mind, and completely avoided portraying the Muslim Turks aesthetically during the movie, which made the movie not realistic enough for us.

Overall the movie is a onetime watch.

Diablo 3: The Ultimate Evil Edition (PS4)PC has always been the platform of choice for Blizzard Entertainment's superlative dungeon crawler Diablo 3, but the arrival of the Ultimate Evil Edition on consoles with the PS4's DualShock 4 controller is a natural fit for the game.

Like any PC to console game, a period of transition will be required for players schooled on the home computer version, however pro gamers can expect it to become like second nature within a matter of hours.

The Ultimate Evil Edition is the same game fans know and love, delivering unaltered hack 'n slash action, with packs of monsters to slay and mountains of loot to pillage.Diablo 3's simplicity made it one of the most addictive games of the last few years, and even on the PS4, it is still a crowd pleaser.

The combat aspect remains relatively straightforward, consisting of furious button bashing and the occasional ambiguous tactics, the game still manages to be complex free which is great. Graphically, Diablo 3 has never looked better than it does on the next-gen consoles, with 1080p visuals matching any high-end PC.

Dungeon crawlers aren't to everyone's taste, and there is none better than Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition on consoles. This is the definitive version of an already great game, which truly excels on the PS4.

“This is the same game that fans know and love, delivering

unadulterated hack 'n slash action”

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition (Xbox One)Sleeping Dogs is one of the most delightful games that has been released this year, they deliver a stellar open world game with a complex story and a myriad of gameplay mechanics.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, has better visuals, sharper textures, an increased draw distance, and many other improvements. The story doesn't change with the Definitive Edition, once again delivering a stellar plot involving undercover cop Wei Shen, who infiltrates the Triads in Hong Kong to not only bring the criminals to justice but also to avenge the death of his sister.

One of the major areas enhanced is the visual aspect as the improvements are quite obvious, from better-looking character models to more detailed textures, and not to mention more populated streets. While the frame-rate is quite good, there are some situations where it drops or lags. Overall visual improvements are much better with an increased quality as compared to the PC edition which will make it worth the investment.

Daylight (PS4, PC)What’s scarier than being hunted in the dark? Being hunted in the dark and lost, that’s what. Daylight’s abandoned hospital is a great horror environment, complete with powerfully unsettling creaks and whispers, groans, spontaneously moving objects, foreboding narration, and all the other trappings one can expect from a quality horror game.

Finding your way around by the light of a smartphone, which is also your mini-map, gives it a nice contemporary touch, too, and it shows off some impressive lighting effects. The game’s foundation are comprehensive, but they put too much stock into its atmosphere, and neglects to actually do something to keep the players attention.

Daylight has a good foundation of a scary atmosphere and interesting bits of story. All of that is squandered by the first half, with poor design, unnecessary box-pushing puzzles, and impotent enemies that are easily scared. By the time we reached the more interesting second act, you would have grown immune to its tricks and could only see it as a mediocre series of fetch quests. Overall a decent game.

Trend Alert: Swinging Sixties28

Swinging 60s, one of the most fascinating eras, the fashion world has everknown, are back!

The comeback has started almost two years ago, when Marc Jacobs featuredbig checked print and retro hair in his SS2013 collection for Louis Vuitton. A year later designers such as Valentino and Gucci used mod-inspired accentson otherwise contemporary fall looks. And since then the trend didn’t stop.

Many of us haven’t lived 1960s, which makes it even more exciting toexperience the 60s chic now! Sixties were defined by funky geometricalpatterns, mini skirts, A-line dresses and ensembles with fitted silhouettes.

Don’t forget the right make-up. Nothing says 60s like attention seeking eyes.Eyelashes were long, thick and detailed, and eyeliners were extended fromthe sides of your eyes. Bouffants, beehives and pixie bobs were the mostpopular hairstyles during the stretch of the 60s – browse through the photos ofTwiggy, Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Hepburn to fully embrace this trend.

If you can’t steal vintage treasures from you mum’s and grandma’swardrobes, hit the shops – most of the fashion designers and chain storesoffer modern interpretations of classic style in their autumn collections.Being endlessly inspired by that decade, we took some standout pieces andcreated fab 60s looks for you to rock the trend.

In the fashion world everything old is new again. This season the plaid trend, that was major in 90s, is creeping back into the wardrobes of sartorial men.Checks of all types hit the runways in a big way at the Fall/Winter 2014collections earlier this year. Alexander McQueen, Zegna, Marc by MarcJacobs are only a few names of the designers, who went mad for checks. There are so many ways to incorporate checked pattern in yourwardrobe: suits or shirts, tailored or sleek, casual piece or elegant dapperensemble. Start with a simple flannel checked shirt. This is a timeless piecethat transcends the wardrobes of men across the globe – from style consciousgents to blue-collar workers. Why not get into a more rock-n-roll spirit by tying a plaid shirt around your waist?

Without a doubt the check prints are mostly about coats, shirts and tailoredsuits. But that doesn’t mean there’s no place for checked trousers in your wardrobe.

A word of warning: the key is to avoid any overload. The most confident ofyou can surely mix different plaid patterns or even wear stripped top andchecked bottom. However we recommend to keep the tartan or checks to onepiece and to make sure that the rest of your outfit is neutral. Unless you arewearing a tailored suit, stick to either checked pants or a plaid-covered top half.

It was yet another great season at Fashion Forward this year – and SeasonFour did not disappoint. Fashion Forward was held from October 4 to 6 at theMadinat Jumeirah in Dubai; and featured 23 regional designers, includingestablished names such as Michael Cinco, Furne One and Emirati designerZareena Yousuf, who presented their couture collections. Fashion Forward iscertainly the right place to discover talented emerging designers – Dubai-basedlabels Ceremony and Hashe debuted at Fashion Forward this season.

Let’s have a look at the showcased collections and discover main trends ofthe season!

MetallicFashion Forward designers incorporated dazzling metallic materials into theircollections in gold, silver and jewel tones as well. The trend went acrossdresses, tops, skirts, trousers and all you can think of. Get inspired by thecatwalk looks and bring the ideas into your wardrobe, if you are not afraid to shine!

Bermuda ShortsBermuda shorts made a big splash at Fashion Forward this season! Althoughmale models did not dominate the catwalks, the designers who focused onmen’s fashion, built their looks around Bermudas, baggy or tailored, butalways above the knee. These shorts are proving versatile - they go withjackets, ample shirts, or as a part of the suit. Men won't have to wait forcasual Thursdays to wear shorts to the office. These are highly tailored andcompletely suitable.

Crop TopsIt’s a youthful summer trend, which still can’t leave the runways. Thedesigners paired stomach-baring tops with minis, long skirts and haremtrousers. Plan on renewing your gym membership, if you are going to try this trend!

CapesCapes are this season’s ultimate through-on-and-go trend. Interestingenough, the region’s designers gave the trend a summer flavor by usingfloaty, light and sheer fabrics. Pair these beautiful capes with silky trousers orwear it over the dress to cover your shoulders and to create an elegant yetcutting-edge look.

Pastel ColoursAll different shades were seen on the runways, but most of the designerskeep their collection sweet in colours. Ice blue, peach, soft pink and lavenderwere seen on the models at the shows. All the neutral tones are very feminineand best to be combined with the lady-like lengths and silhouettes.

Community is the foundation here at what we do at Live Your Legend, because who you surround yourself with is really important and does change and create possibilities for what you do in life.

How did your journey as a career change strategist begin? My journey started in Spain, when I did a semester there and I lived with a local family for six months and had the most amazing experience ever. I then came back to the States, graduated from university with high honours, got a Magna Cum Laude, had a really high GPA, went for a ton of interviews and did all the right things and yet I couldn’t find a job. So instead of wasting time, I went for a graduation trip with a friend to Europe for seven weeks, travelled all over, met up with several friends. During the trip we went to Spain and visited a couple of our friends who were teaching English. That perked our interest and at the end of our seven week trip we ended up flying right back to Sevilla, Spain instead of going home and we ended up staying for the year. This led us to start an English speaking programme for a business man, some students and children, and we even hired some more people. Through my first business venture I learned to apply myself and become open to exploring new cultures, and truly understand how people lived. I had learnt through my time in Spain that people prioritise happiness over

Scott Dinsmore is on a mission to change the world by helping people find what excites them and build a career around the work they love doing. He is a career change strategist who has had a demoralising experience at a Fortune 500 company, which led him to understand why 80% of adults hate the work they do, and more importantly, to identify what the other 20% were doing differently.

work and money and I saw how much they enjoyed their community and the way they spent time with people, it was so refreshing. It definitely showed me a different way of doing things, as compared to the American standard which is all about climbing the corporate ladder, gaining status and earning more money. So when I got back to the States I was super pumped to do something different, but I fell into the same trap after listening to my mentors to get a good job, earn a good salary, with a good company that has a great training program, and so I ended up doing just that and got a great job for a Fortune 500 company. I was really proud of myself when I was able to get the job except that after two weeks I was pounding my head against the keyboard about how awful I felt. I found the work to be very meaningless, and a terrible waste of time and I knew immediately that it was a very bad fit for both myself and the company and soI quit.

After this I soon realised that I wanted to make some type of impact and interviewed and researched a lot of people, I came to the conclusion that only 20% of people do what actually inspires them versus the 80% that just wake up, look miserable and just do what they have to do. I applied these facts when I met up friends and clients who were having issues with their jobs and together we quickly realised that they were not living their life’s purpose and were not passionate about the job that they did. This in turn motivated them to quit and pursue their dreams and passions by creating a working model that would help them to make money and keep them satisfied.

What were some of the challenges that you faced when making this huge change? The first big challenge that I faced was when I had started my first blog “Routing for Your Success” and the blog was filled with inspiring articles and my thoughts and ideas. There was a time when I would read a ton of books and write book reviews and send them to friends just for fun, but no one followed it for four years, except just my wife Chelsea and my parents. I had about 111 people on email who were mainly friends. But no one was really looking at all this stuff, and that was four long years with zero percent growth! I was officially frustrated and was ready to shut it down but then I had moved to San Francisco and met a bunch of people online and in person who had these amazing businesses that were based on their talents, unique skills, strengths and were doing things in a meaningful way while still making money. I never knew anyone personally who had done this and it blew my mind and it got me motivated. So I would try and spend as much time as I could with these people, and within six months’ time, Live Your Legend grew by ten times and then in another twelve months it grew sixty times. At one time it grew so much that we had people from so many different countries, from all around the world who used our career and connection tools on a monthly basis. It was then I realised what had changed, and it was that I was spending time with people who were inspired to do better and pushed themselves outside their comfort zone, which in turn motivated me to realise why I was not doing the same. What I have learnt is, the fastest way to change your outcome is to change the people you hang out with, it is like Jim Rohn said “You are the average of five people you spend the most amount of time with.” That is one of the most powerful life hack that affected me and changed my world and raised my standards.

Tell us how you coined the term “Live Your Legend” and what you mean by it? I was fly fishing in Patagonia, Chile with my dad and we go there every year as a father and son thing that we do, and I was sitting out by this river on a gorgeous day and I was reading ‘The Alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho for the fifth time and it is about Santiago’s journey to pursue this treasure he wanted to find, and they called it his personal legend. It is a journey that one has to pursue and so I just thought to myself ‘Personal Legend’ and then I got to ‘Live Your Legend’ and that is how I got the name.

How does one figure out what they are passionate about? The key is to follow the path of excitement and spark, to treat your life as one big experiment or several mini experiments. Every job, class, book, hobby, skill and person you meet or take is a chance to learn and becomes a data point. This in turn creates two feelings, either you will love it or you would hate it. It is very important to note these things down, by either journaling or blogging. Every time someone does something inspiring or has a cool job, write it down. You need to form this rigorous dedication for self- discovery and knowing yourself as whole person. One can do the impossible and conquer their fears by simply getting out of their comfort zone while surrounding themselves with inspirational people who are already doing the impossible and are successful for it. These reference points will help you to figure out your strengths and weaknesses and ultimately help you to find out what you are passionate about.

What do you want to be remembered for?I really wish to inspire possibilities and to show people what they do matters and that they can make a difference. I hope to provide a framework of communities all around the world which will make peoples dreams doable, achievable and believable.

Tell us something about yourself that not too many people know?I love doing hand stands, I am really good at them and can stand on my hands for about as long as I want.

Any advice for the youth of Dubai?Write down five things that you can do right now and then go out and actually do them, this will motivate you to get into the habit of doing things. Remember that the biggest risk is doing nothing, and you really don’t want to live your life filled with regrets.

HardwareThis is where the biggest change was made; iPhone 6 is larger and wider than any previously released iPhone. Gone is the one handed usability where users could reach the upper most opposite corner of the screen with a thumb. It seems Apple has finally given into the demands of the larger screen market that was dominated by devices that ran Android and Windows Phone. The iPhone now sports a 4.7" screen with a much slimmer profile of 6.7 mm thick.

Overall the hardware feels great in hand, the phone feels well-built and more organic due to its curved profile and the display glass almost melting into the brushed aluminium unibody construction. When it comes to looks, this device does not look and feel like an "old Leica camera" (iPhone 4/4s) or an expensive watch (iPhone 5/5s).

SoftwareiOS 8 is the most mature version of Apple's mobile platform to date; the plethora of sharing and customisation options makes it feel almost Android-like, albeit without the total freedom Google offers its users.

CameraOnce again, the MegaPixels didn't grow in numbers, however Apple has greatly improved its camera sensors. In addition, the slow-mo function has grown to 240 fps and the active focus pixels are nice additions for a better video recording experience. Not only is the video is crisp and bright, the phone is now capable of focusing on moving objects without the need of users tapping on the screen. Nice. VerdictiPhone 6 is a great upgrade for everyone, however due to its slight performance and overall improvements, it does not stand as an attractive offer for those who own iPhone 5s; indeed, the bigger and better screen tech will lure many users in, however, iPhone 6 does not feel much different to the iPhone 5s in a real world use. Those who use anything older than the iPhone 5s should definitely upgrade, given a bigger screen size is not much of a chore to get used to.

iPhone is eight years old now and it has gone through several design changes since it was first announced in January 2007; however, this is probably the biggest design overhaul Apple has done to the iPhone since the first generation. Enter iPhone 6, the "Bigger Than Big" iPhone to date.

Nokia Lumia 735

Overall Rating:Hardware – 8/10Software – 6/10Camera – 8/10Overall – 7/10

HardwareLumia 735 is pretty much the Lumia you have already seen and gotten used to. The polycarbonate body is seamless and feels great on hand; it comes in different colours: white, black, green and neon orange, the latter is especially beautiful. At a 720 x 1280 pixels, 4.7" (~312 ppi pixel density) screen, this phone is a beauty to hold; Lumia's capability at colour reproduction is excellent while using it outdoors is made easy by the ClearBlack technology pioneered by Nokia a few years ago.

SoftwareLumia 735 comes with Windows 8.1 and it is no slouch either. Indeed, the OS is the best Windows phone OS to date, however, the fact remains; this phone is excellent to use. The app market for Windows Phone is not on par with the competition offered by Apple and Google. On a side note, however, we did notice the phone slowing down while transitioning from one screen to the other within certain apps.

CameraThe phone is built for taking selfies, or at least that is what Microsoft would like you to do with it; Lumia 735 even comes with a Lumia Selfie app which lets you take wide screen shots with the 5MP front-facing shooter. In our testing, the camera did proof to be better than majority of the competition at taking selfies.

VerdictOverall, this phone is great; it is affordable, well-built, looks good and Windows Phone 8.1 is starting to become a platform that is not so painful to use.

With the aquisition of Nokia, Microsoft has been expected to come out with Microsoft Phone, however, by looking at Lumia 735, one can easily spot Nokia branding across the device, albeit with a clearer presence of Microsoft. Lumia 735 was built for those who love to take selfies while being reasonibly priced and packing just enough feature for the most of us.

Where does the name “The Explosions” come from? Who chose it?The name was assigned to us. Trust me we didn’t pick it ourselves! When we first auditioned together in the UK our agent said the name ‘reflects’ the music scene in the UAE, hence we are called The Explosions.

What type of music do you'll play?We believe in variety and keeping things fresh. At one point we played Motown, sixty’s & seventies rock and a bit of pop, now we play around fourteen Queen songs and pop like ‘All About That Bass’ - so I would say it is all dependant on who we are playing for. Personally, anything funky with big vocals is what we love.

Share your journey with us? Where did you'll begin? We have been through so much that it’s hard to know where to begin! Our first contract was to be in Dubai starting around August 2013, so we were rehearsing in the UK getting ready for it. But when our singer didn’t turn up at the airport when we were boarding the plane, we were so worried that the agency would send us straight back. Luckily for us we managed to get a new singer out just before the gig started. After a year and a half, Sean (bass player) and I are the only two original members. Recently one of the members had a death in the family and even then they graciously arrived at the last minute to finish out their contract. I feel confident that we have settled on the perfect line-up now.

The Explosions are a UK based band comprising of Danny Langston on drums, Dale Pringle-Martin on guitars, Sean Greene on bass & lead vocals; Tom Knight on keyboards and lead vocals and Danielle Carruthers on lead vocals.

The band has played their music in several countries such as New Zealand, Bahrain; Australia and once even on a world cruise. The best way to describe the sound of the band is that they are a beautiful mixture of hard rock, funk and groove, while still incorporating pop music. Our team had the opportunity to speak with the band manager, Tom Knight who envisions The Explosions to be one of the most sought after cover band in the Middle East and Asia.

The Explosions

Page 49: Empower Issue

Musicians 47How did you all form the band? Out story is a little unusual, as each member in the band had privately auditioned with our agency, ‘Hear & Now Entertainment’ in the UK, and they had put us together and sent us out to Dubai, and that is how the band The Explosions came to form.

Where do you currently play at?Currently we are the resident band at the Hard Rock Cafe in Festival City, Dubai, and we play from Monday through Saturday night starting from 8.30pm and finish around 1am.

How long has the band been playing for?Sean & I have been playing from the start for about 2 years and are the original band members of The Explosions. Since then we have had a couple of change in members and for the last 8 months we feel that we have settled into a perfect line up of members and rhythm.

Tell us a little bit about the personality of each member?Well I’m Tom, the band leader and am on keys & lead vocals. I would say that I am quite a strong personality and like things to be perfect. My motto is ‘work hard & play hard’ and that is usually reflected in our performances. Sean is our bass player & vocalist. He is the oldest member in the band and has so much experience. He is renowned for his incredible playing, and his incredible flexibility, which he puts on show every night. Danielle is our lead vocalist, and she comes from a musical theatre background and is a professionally trained dancer. Danielle really sells you a story when she sings you a song, and she looks great too! Dale is our guitarist, and is one of the best guitarist I have ever worked with and has a fantastic ability to beef up any song that we play. His solo’s are pretty epic! Danny is our drummer, and comes from a funk driven background so he really spices up a lot of the tunes we play. He gets a lot of attention from our female fans!

Have you seen a growth/demand for more live music in the UAE?It seems almost everywhere you go in the UAE, there is some sort of live entertainment, and because of the amount of expat residents here in the UAE you also get a huge variety in the types of acts you can experience. We have seen some of the best here such as the ‘The Boxtones’ & ‘Jet-Lag’, which are some of my favourites. I have also seen some of the worst, but you can’t complain with the amount of choices you have here in the UAE.

What is the proudest moment as a band?Well certainly my favourite moment was celebrating Freddie Mercury at Hard Rock Café, it was fun dressing up as one of my hero’s and singing all of those amazing songs to a packed house, the feeling was totally exceptional. But certainly my proudest moment has been when everyone personally and financially helped out our guitarist to get home as fast as possible due to a family emergency. Everyone in the Hard Rock team and Hear & Now entertainment team made me really proud to be part of this remarkable team.

What can we expect from The Explosions? You can expect a great show as we truly love what we do! So come on down to the Hard Rock Café Monday through Saturday from 8:30pm onwards and we would love to party with you!

Our team attended their live show, and trust us it was spectacular. We highly recommend you go in grab a couple of burgers and enjoy one of the best live shows available in the UAE.

Beela’s Kitchen48

What/ who inspired you to start food blogging?I had always enjoyed looking at food blogs and beautiful food imagery, as well as toying with the idea of starting a blog. I had just gotten married and was living in Zanzibar, a beautiful island, but one where you have to constantly find stimulation to keep yourself busy. Having always loved baking as a child, and now with so much time on my hands, I became more experimental in the kitchen. In the end it was my husband who actually gave me the push to start a blog based on my baking. He saw how much I loved taking photos of my creations and suggested I give it a go. Thus in late 2012 Beela Bakes was born!

What is your favourite part of food blogging? My favourite part of food blogging is definitely styling the food shots and seeing the finished images post photography. I think I’ve come a long way since my earliest recipe photos, and I’d really like to hone my skills in food photography and designing to a professional level. I also enjoy coming up with the ideas for recipes – I have so many that I only wish I had more time to create them!

What is the one daring recipe you would like to try?For the past year I have been building up the courage to make ‘cronuts’ which are a hybrid version of donuts and croissants for the past year. But in order to do that I would need to perfect the art of making croissants, hence the delay.

What is your favourite cuisine of food?It is very difficult to choose just one favourite cuisine, but I would say I really love Thai cuisine in general. It is aromatic, full of flavour and I love the combination of spicy, sweet, salty and sour. You can’t beat a good Tom Yum soup or a Som Tam papaya salad.

What are your hopes for your blog, and where do you see yourselves in the next five years?I want to include more savoury recipes on my blog, and I hope to do a total site revamp sometime in the near future. It would be great to eventually work in food photography on a professional basis but I know whatever I am doing in five years times will definitely be in a creative capacity and I intend for my blog to still be around too!

Pastel White Chocolate Mousse Pots This recipe came about by accident when I realised I only had white chocolate available to make chocolate mousse. It’s perfect to serve in little pots at gatherings.

Makes 8 small portions, or 4 normal sized228g white chocolate, chopped5 tbsp. water2 eggs, separated1 tbsp. caster sugar1/8 tsp. salt1 cup, plus 2 tbsp. heavy/double creamPink and green food gels, for tintingWhite or coloured chocolate curls to decorate

1. Combine the white chocolate and water in a medium bowl. Place the bowl over a small saucepan filled with about 1 inch of water, and simmer over low heat. Stir the mixture continuously until it is melted and smooth, and remove the bowl off the heat. 2. In a large bowl whisk together the egg yolks, salt, and one and a half teaspoon of the sugar until it is smooth. Now pour the white chocolate mixture into the eggs and whisk well to combine. Let the mixture cool slightly for about five minutes. 3. Using an electric whisk, beat the egg whites until foamy. Add the remaining sugar into the egg whites and now whisk for about two minutes until soft peaks have formed. 4. With a spatula gently fold a quarter of the egg whites into the chocolate mixture. Add the rest of the egg whites and fold in until the white streaks have disappeared.5. In the same mixing bowl used for the egg whites, add the heavy cream and whisk until it begins to thicken for about a minute. Fold the cream into the mousse mixture, until no white streaks remain. 6. Separate two-thirds of the mixture equally into two smaller bowls, so that a third of the mixture still remains in the large bowl. Using a tooth-pick tint a very small amount of green gel food colouring, about two drops worth, into one of the bowls, and mix until a pale green colour is formed. Repeat with the pink food gel in another other bowl. 7. You will now have three mousse mixtures - white, green and pink. Spoon the mixtures into individual serving cup and cover with plastic wrap/cling film. Leave to set in the fridge for at least two hours or up to twenty-four hours.

Caramelized Peach, Banana and Pomegranate Tart

Pastry tarts are so easy to make and the type of fruits you can use are endless. The combination of peach, banana and pomegranate here creates a delightful

sticky sweet mesh with a hint of tartness.

1. Preheat oven to 180 C. Roll out your puff pastry to a square or rectangular shape (mine was to about 8x5"), and till it is thin.

2. Form a small border by folding in the sides and pressing. Layer peach and banana pieces all over the pastry base and sprinkle pomegranate arils.

3. Pour the melted butter all over the fruit base. Sprinkle brown sugar generously all over, and cinnamon powder to your liking.

4. Brush the pastry border with egg yolk. 5. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until pastry has puffed up and is a

golden brown. Serve immediately.

MayrigSituated underneath the shadow of the Burj Khalifa in the heart of Downtown Dubai is Mayrig, which in Armenian means Little Mother. The story of Mayrig’s unique menu is a testament to preserving family recipes and sharing them with the global community of Dubai. Mayrig has hosted actors, musicians and politicians across the Levant at both their location in Dubai, as well their original location in Beirut’s Gemmayzeh district.

What solidifies loyal customers before they taste Sempougov, the grilled eggplant and vegetable salad, or the ‘Armenian tabouleh’ known as Itch, is the warm and comfy interior. Even if you are not Armenian, Mayrig captures the allure of a home cooked meal, including the common practice of grandparents piling your plate with more food. After trying all five of the delicious salads, ranging from sweet to bitter, we tasted two types of keufteh, a lentil kebbe as well as a potato kebbe. Both were served with their own garnishing that complimented each other very well. By this point, the fusion aspect of Mayrig was apparent.

The chef’s at Mayrig attemped to change the dishes to suit the taste buds of UAE patrons. Our next dish, Hummus Sojouk, reassured us of the fact; instead of topping the hummus with pine nuts or beef, Mayrig’s special Hummus Sojouk is topped with red, Armenian sausages. Out of the hot entrees, the Soubeureg was my personal favourite as a lover of all things breakfast. It’s a golden, circular omelette-like pastry filled with three cheeses layered on top of one another and melted. After three rounds of food the main course arrived on a pie dish, Mante is an assortment of small, hand-rolled meat dumplings with yogurt and sumac draped on top. Although the presentation was interesting, the beef was tough. Along with the Mante, we were served Fishnah Kebab, grilled kebab topped with a wild cherry sauce. To top off a meal that delighted all our taste buds, we concluded with homemade Ashtalieh ice cream topped with cotton candy and pistachios. As well, we had the healthy option of Kaymakleh, dried apricots filled with Lebanese cream, drizzled with sugary syrup on the side.

The food at Mayrig is the highlight of the experience, and the cuisine is complimented by the beautiful interiors of the restaurant. Also, the gaps in between courses allow you to really savor the flavor of each individual dish, similar to that of Turkish food. Although you may not enjoy every dish, the yogurt allows you to enjoy the next dish. Being that this is a one of a kind home-cooked, fusion restaurant, time spent enjoying a Mayrig meal with family and friends is a unique experience.

The music then changed into fast salsa based songs with Carlo leading the way and showing us a move several times with us mimicking them. As we proceeded the moves got faster and more challenging, but Carlo was forever motivating and smiling at all of us, this just helped boost and pump us to try harder.

The class was an hour and a half with short pauses for water and restroom breaks. The routines were easy to follow, that are guaranteed to burn loads of calories, while filling it with fun music.

In Hattemer's clever and highly entertaining debut, a witty and sarcastic Ethan and his three friends decide to

take down the reality TV show, ‘For Art's Sake’, which is being filmed at their high school, the esteemed Selwyn

Arts Academy, where each student is more talented than the next.

The Vigilante Poets of Selwyn Academy begin their journey in English class, when Ethan and his friends are inspired to write a long poem stating the negative facts about enrolling into the reality show and distribute the

poem to the entire student body. Midway through the book, readers find out Luke, who is the creative force

behind the poem, becomes a contestant on the nefarious show. It's up to Ethan and his two remaining best

friends, and also the heroic gerbil named Baconnaise to save their school. Even though the author describes

the story through the protagonist Ethan’s flawed and biased mind, we still get to see the other characters on

their own terms too, which shows us their individual perspectives and how they think about situations

throughout the book.

Along the way, the group learns a web of secrets and corruption involving the principal, vice principal, and even their favourite teacher. Readers can observe the

sarcastic way through which people can fall short, and come through, and most importantly how art can make a

difference in peoples life.

If you like reading calm and regular books, then Beta is definitely not the one for you. It will tear up your heart faster than Enrique Iglesias’s song ‘Hero’. This book can be described as ‘intense’, and is a sci- fi reader’s dream! The book Beta is about the protagonist Elysia, who is experiencing the world and people for the first time as she is the clone of a teenage girl who had to die for her to exist in the faraway island of Demense. In the story, Elysia is bought by a family to be a companion to two other children after their sister goes away to school in a far-away city called Biome. The book describes the land of Demense as the epitome of perfection, right from the sand, to the residents, everything is fake, flawless and deceiving. Through the book, readers can easily visualise how Elysia partakes in her new life experiences through the limited data bank of information that is stored within her brain as a new born clone. As the book progresses, we couldn’t stop reading, as the author Cohn adds tons of twists and turns to reveal something which we didn’t see coming. The book was also able to capture the emotional turmoil of Elysia’s innocence as she finds out the disgusting way the other clones are treated, and how purposeless the residents of Demense’s are. The book is a fall must read!

I Have a Dream…Lying on my cot,

Rest was what I wanted a lot,But the dream in my eyes,

Prevents me from enjoying it nice!

There are hurdles to bear,There are barriers so rare,

I crave to sit for a while,But my soul tells me I am yet to walk a mile!

There are many opportunities to taste,No time to waste,

The world will know me soon,For that, hard work is surely the only boon!

Fame for me is so near,My claim on it is so clear,

It’s all a game of dice,Play it wise to make your life!

Sit and ponder on it sometime,Don’t you want your life to rhyme?

For if you have a dream in your eyes,You’re sure to realise the worth of your life!!

You and ILet’s make a promise tonight,You and I,That no matter how much we tremble,Or how much we fight,We will stand tall, side by side.

Let our dreams collide,Our passions entwine,And take on this world,You and I,Simply you and I.

Dream big,Dream bright,For one day you may finally reach the end of the tunnel,And walk into the light.

And when you do, remember this night,For this is the night we made the promise,You and I.

To never give up on this fight,Rage and rage into the night,Darkness may intimidate, threaten and lie, But we have each other,You and I,Simply you and I.

Don’t lose heart or sight,I will stand by you through all,For this is my place,Forever at your side,Simply put, it’s always,You and I.

SeasonsYou came in the summer and I almost tripped…Through the fall I remembered your smile…When winter came I drew you on the snow…Spring was the soft grass and flowers in your hair…

I remember the last day of summer…As sweat clung to our skin and my clothes were yours…The night was morose - the crickets disappeared…The stars seemed too bright as they mocked us…But your eyes were so close that I forgot…

I remember the last day of fall…The front yard was painted orange…The trees turned grey and leaves…Cracked harshly but I heard a sound…Your laugh seemed to take it all away…

I remember the last day of winter…The chilly air slipped through the windows…And the snowmen started to melt…Their smiles faded, I almost felt sad…But you turned around and I forgot again…

I remember the last day of spring…The grass was soft against my ankles…And the flowers danced in your hair…But still I wept and wept…Because I wasn’t the one to place them there…

Conquer the Fear of Public Speaking58Did you know that 10% of the human population are terrified of public speaking, another 80% are in the middle who experience moderate discomfort, and another 10% absolutely love public speaking. These facts are a huge indicator about how something so unassuming can be so petrifying, and even though feeling some nervousness before giving a speech and/or presentation is natural, too much nervousness can be detrimental to your health and future career growth.

Here are some proven tips on how to control your nerves and make you seem

more confident:

by bhargavi Nagrecha

Page 61: Empower Issue

Know your materialPick a topic that you are interested in. Know more about it than you include in your speech. Use humour, personal stories and conversational language – that will help you and your audience to retain the information more efficiently.

Practice. Practice. Practice.Review out loud with all the equipment you plan on using so as to get used to it and appear more natural and fluid on the day of the speech. Remember to control filler words such as “aaahh” “uumm”; Practice with a timer and allow time for the unexpected.

Visualise yourself giving your speech. Imagine yourself speaking confidently, hear your voice, and make sure to enunciate each word clearly and loudly. Visualise the audience clapping – it will boost your confidence.

Know the room. Arrive early, walk around the speaking area, practice using the microphone, check for the availability of a whiteboard if you wish to use visual aids and most importantly check the electrical outlets.

Relax. The second you walk to the podium look around at the audience and smile and count to three before saying anything. This will help transform nervous energy into enthusiasm.

Realise that people want you to succeed.

Know that the audience wants you to be interesting, stimulating, informative and entertaining. As long as you can be yourself

and keep the information relevant yet fun they will love you.

Don’t apologise for any nervousness slip. The audience probably never noticed it. Use PowerPoint slides, flipcharts, videos and other visual aids to help guide you in the right direction and give you a quick breather.

Concentrate on the message – not

the medium. Focus your attention away from your

own anxieties and concentrate on your message and your audience.

Gain experience. Experience builds confidence, know that you will only get better with more live practice. So learn to put yourself out there and give speeches despite your fears.

The best way to do that is by joining a club at your university or by joining a Meetup group (Meetup.com), as they can provide you with the experience you need in a safe and friendly environment.

Scorpio23 October- 22 November

Scorpios are very deep, intense people, there is always more to them than meets the eye. They present a cool, detached and unemotional air to the world yet lying underneath is tremendous power, extreme strength, intense passion, strong will and a persistent drive. Scorpios have a very penetrative mind, do not be surprised if they ask questions, they are trying to delve deeper, figure things out and survey the situation. Scorpio’s have a great sense of secretiveness and mystery. This magnetically draws people to them. They are known to be controlling but only because this makes them feel safe.

ARIES20 March- 19 April

This is a very positive time for you. In terms of work you will feel an immense flow of energy, and what is more important is that you will be productive. It is important to focus on being organised as you will be quite busy and will be asked to do several important tasks together. Your future career will depend on your execution of this task.

LEO22 July- 22 August

This month you will feel like someone has waved a magic wand over your life. Your work will bring you joy and a lot of opportunities and successes. However you will face several technical problems such as faults in electrical systems so make sure to do additional checks of your systems and back up all of your work. Your friends and family may need your assistance this month.

SAGITTARIUS22 November- 21 December

You will experience harmony and balance all throughout the month. It is very important that you do your work very efficiently with good quality, and try not to deter. Focus on the job at hand, maintain balance and do not pay any attention to competitors. Do not try to get ahead of everyone and appear as a leader, especially if you have no prior experience dealing with the situation.

TAURUS19 April- 20 May

This will be a very productive month, however it is recommended that you not start any new ventures in terms of relationships and/or work at the moment. You will be successful in all your current tasks, focus on investing additional resources into the direction that you are close towards finishing. It is here that you should concentrate all of your abilities and all your attention.

VIRGO22 August- 22 September

This will be a month lacking harmony, however it will be filled with positive energy. You can expect a raise in productivity, and an increased speed of mental reactions. In other words, you will have everything that is needed for precise and efficient work. It is crucial to not be shy of applying your knowledge to practice, and believe in yourself.

CAPRICORN21 December- 20 January

You will be presently surprised at the pace of your own work, and will be able to accomplish everything at once. The more you succeed during this time the higher the opportunity to maximise your career. Be more articulate with yourself and your work, as this could define victory. Do not worry if someone does not understand you, just know that everyone is different.

GEMINI20 May- 21 June

It is recommended to approach your finances carefully. You will be given a lot of opportunities to grow but do not invest into something too deeply. Money should be saved this month, so collect yourself and analyse everything carefully. Make a detailed action plan and try and stick to it as much as possible as success is guaranteed only by being effective and punctual.

LIBRA22 September- 23 October

Any project that you will attempt will come to life in the best way possible towards the end of the month. This fact combined with your increased productivity will allow you to get good profits, receive a bonus, or increase your authority – depending on where and for whom you work. Do not get ahead of yourself and help others if they ask for assistance.

CANCER21 June- 22 July

It will be an interesting month which will provide you with energy and inner motivation. You will find that events and information are naturally ambiguous so be ready for any venture that may suddenly fail, regardless of how precisely you prepared for it. Expect the unexpected and accept things as how they are. If you cannot make it better then don’t pay attention to it.

SCORPIO23 October- 22 November

Be careful this month as there is a high chance of being careless. As a result, everything will turn out to be much worse than it could have. Your current projects will conclude even faster than you hoped, while new ones will promise you far greater profits than you hoped for. Just be attentive to details and to those around you.

PISCES19 February- 20 March

This month you might feel some difficulties in interacting with people and feel as though you have issues with your communication. Your work will be quite successful so long as you state your points clearly yet politely. Be careful with your expenses and always consider whether the situation is worth your energy, time and attention.

AQUARIUS20 January- 18 February

This month before leaping into the pool of your aspirations and desires headfirst, you should consider some more option as you tend to become a fanatic and go towards the extreme. Do not thoughtlessly input yourself in all directions as you will soon realise that it will do you no good, so try and be more productive and organised.
