Insurance helps to advance social progress

Without it, new technologies wouldn’t get off the ground. Business would grind to a halt. And communities across the world would be left vulnerable to risks such as civil unrest and natural catastrophes.

Lloyd’s is the global leader in specialist insurance. We do business in more than 200 countries and territories and although we’re synonymous with the City of London, 80% of our business comes from outside the UK.

With expertise earned over centuries, we have been able to retain our pre-eminent position due to a combination of our reputation, scale, unique working culture and commitment to innovation. We are known for our integrity, doing the right thing and paying valid claims no matter their scale or complexity. Both the Titanic and, more recently, the Costa Concordia were insured at Lloyd’s. And in the wake of the attacks on the Twin Towers on 9/11, Lloyd’s

syndicates paid out billions of dollars, settling scores of multimillion-pound claims from affected businesses.

Our business lies in responding to new risks from cyber crime to terrorism, driverless cars to digital developments. And that’s why we’re always looking for new thinkers, so we can stay one step ahead.

At Lloyd’s we develop the complex insurance needed to Empower human progress everywhere. Exploring space. Launching new robotic technology. Protecting against climate change and natural disasters. None of this would be possible without the insurance cover we provide at Lloyd’s. As a graduate here, you can help to safeguard enterprise around the world, building resilience for businesses and local communities and strengthening economic growth.

So what (exactly) is Lloyd’s?The drones are coming. From spraying crops to delivering parcels they could soon be part of everyday life. It’s exciting new technology that could bring many benefits. But what are the risks of using pilotless aircraft? We’re developing the complex insurance that ensures this new robotic technology can get off the ground.

First things first: we’re not an insurance company. Nor are we connected with any bank.

Lloyd’s is actually a market where risks that need to be covered are put to insurers who can provide that protection, ensuring that social and economic progress can continue across the globe.

The client with a risk (it could be anything; a manufacturing plant, an event, a shopping mall, a guitarist’s right hand...) contacts their Lloyd’s registered insurance broker.

The broker goes to the Lloyd’s market to meet underwriters, who assess the risk and offer terms for insurance cover. The two parties negotiate the policy and, if agreed, the cover is placed.

These underwriters work for a diverse range of syndicates, which include international insurance companies to smaller niche firms. These syndicates join together to insure a single risk or program.

The Lloyd’s corporation oversees the smooth running of the market. It protects the Lloyd’s trading position, manages its financial assets, and strengthens its brand worldwide. It’s also where Lloyd’s support functions (IT, Finance, Marketing and so on) are housed.

We’re always innovating. Creating new ways of working to modernise the insurance market. For example, our new operating processes will allow one touch data capture, reducing the risk of error and saving time.

Our Insurance graduate programme

Our two-year Insurance graduate programme has been designed to empower you to progress in the world of specialist insurance. We’ll help you discover where your strengths and talents lie – and then equip you with the contacts you’ll need to pursue your chosen path.

You won’t just be working within the Lloyd’s corporation. You’ll also work within the Lloyd’s market, at a broker or an insurance company that has a syndicate at Lloyd’s. Through 24 months and four placements you’ll gain a 360°

perspective of the insurance business.

Your four placements will cover Claims, Broking, Underwriting and working for the Lloyd’s corporation itself. You’ll handle claims ranging from theft and misadventure to tragedy and catastrophe. You’ll analyse clients’ needs and place their cover. You’ll join an underwriter to assess and price specialist risk. And you will work with the corporation itself, on anything from assessing global regulatory requirements and emerging risks to

playing a role in how the market is being transformed.

At the end of the two years you will have achieved the full ACII qualification – after having completed the first graduate programme in the industry to be accredited by the Chartered Insurance Institute. From an in-depth knowledge of the industry, to leadership skills, and a new-found confidence, you’ll have all you need to progress rapidly in the fascinating world of specialised insurance.

Amy Pugh“For me, the biggest attraction of the Lloyd’s graduate programme was its variety. Its range of areas, including broking, underwriting, claims and the corporation of Lloyd’s, gives you a broad and rounded experience of the insurance industry.

So far, I have completed placements within Delegated Authorities at Lloyd’s and International Casualty Team at Lockton London LLP and the Lloyd’s Delegated Authorities team. The International Casualty placement was particularly interesting because I was involved with policy changes, risk placements and exposures. Both placements were excellent though,

because on each I was given real and significant responsibility.

It’s not just experience that’s helped me along though: I’ve had valuable technical training too. On the graduate programme, we’re all working towards the Advanced Diploma in Insurance, and Lloyd’s are giving us great study support and fantastic, in-depth training to get us through. I’ve found Lloyd’s is a great place to make the transition from university to the world of work.”

Amy joined the Lloyd’s graduate programme in 2015 after completing a Politics, Philosophy and Economics degree at the University of Exeter.

“The variety is the biggest attraction.”Civil unrest can flare suddenly. Insuring against it is a highly complex business. But without such cover, many emerging economies would never be able to grow.

Adapting to climate change. In the last 30 years alone, the world has lost 40% of its corals through climate change, pollution and destructive fishing. Lloyd’s syndicates are helping to assess the rate of decline to work out what needs to be done to protect the world’s coral reefs.

You’ll emerge from the programme as a confident and marketable professional.

With our support, you’ll have developed your communication and leadership skills, as well as having acquired a key rofessional qualification. Not only will you have stretched and surprised yourself, you’ll have made a real contribution to an organisation that’s ensuring human progress – both social and economic.

Our business demands that Lloyd’s has a full repertoire of skills under one roof. Our people operate across a huge range of areas, from delivering complex catastrophe modelling, to marketing our services, developing our IT, to negotiating with clients.

That’s why we need many different kinds of talented people for our operation, from analysts

and strategists, to networkers and communicators, and from dealmakers and commercial operators, to ambassadors who can represent us locally and globally, including in high-growth markets. As a result, we welcome graduates with degrees in everything from Maths, Business and Law to English, Philosophy, Science and Geography.

What we look for is a grade or expected grade of 2:2 or above. You won’t of course be an expert in insurance but you will be able to show us why you’re interested in Lloyd’s and what we do.

What we’re looking for

Anna Rogers“I first encountered Lloyd’s through my university’s careers service. At the time, I didn’t know much about what they did, but they seemed to be involved in a lot of areas that related to my degree, like emerging markets in newly industrialised countries. So I got a summer internship here to find out more. It really helped me decide, and when I finished my degree, I applied for, and was offered, a place on the graduate programme.

My placement at Tokio Marine Kiln was particularly interesting because I had the chance to work in their large corporate property

and construction divisions, where I helped to insure some major, influential construction projects. A key one was the expansion of a number of Chinese railways. That was especially exciting because we had the sense that we were actually enabling human progress, facilitating the movement and the social and economic development of populations.”

After graduating from Cambridge with a BA in Geography, Anna joined the Lloyd’s graduate programme in 2015. Since then, she has worked on placements at Tokio Marine Kiln and Markel International.

“We were supporting the economic development of populations.”

“I helped to assess the potential risks of cyber attacks.”

“The Lloyd’s graduate programme has actually surpassed my expectations. Before I started, I thought doing the rotational placements would be like moving between departments, but it’s not like that at all. You move through completely different organisations and get real independence and responsibility, so you don’t feel like a graduate: you feel like a permanent, valued member of your team.

The other thing that has really surpassed my expectations is the variety and excitement of the work here. My first placement was at Allied World, where I was involved in analysing cyber exposures. I helped to assess the potential risks of cyber attacks, so for example: how many airborne flights would be affected if cyber terrorists targeted British Airways?

On my second placement at Atrium I worked within the Claims team. From the first week I was looking at claims from multiple classes and seeing how they proceed. After a few months I was even able to assist the peer review process and provide my feedback on how claims are handled. There are so many exciting opportunities at Lloyd’s: for me the difficulty is finding an area that I don’t want to work in.”

After graduating from UCL with a BSc in Physics, Declan joined the Lloyd’s graduate programme in 2015. Since then, he has worked on placements at Allied World and Atrium.

Playing live can be a risky business. What if the lead singer doesn’t show, bad weather stops a concert, or the wearable technology given out to the audience doesn’t work? Our complex insurance makes sure everything from a huge festival to major sporting events can go ahead.

A wander through Tate Modern. A curry on Brick Lane. Or an exploratory trip to Spitalfields Market.

Working at Lloyd’s, you’ll have a whole host of cultural treasures on your doorstep, from Shakespeare’s Globe to St Paul’s. Not to mention a cornucopia of international cuisine found nowhere else in the world, shops from small boutiques to large malls, bars, gyms, cinemas, theatres and pop-up experiences.

In keeping with the animated atmosphere at Lloyd’s, you’ll find there’s an active social scene. We have numerous clubs and activities (business, community and just fun related) on offer.

In addition to the experts around you, we also give you structured support by assigning you a ‘work buddy’, together with a senior mentor to advise and encourage.

Lloyd’s is also a firm believer in sensible working hours. We work hard here, make no mistake, but we know the value of people who enjoy a genuine work-life balance.

Helping communities thrive

Lloyd’s Corporate Social Responsibility supports local communities around the world through our programmes.

In London last year over 2,600 people working in the Lloyd’s market volunteered their time as part of Lloyd’s Community Programme. These volunteers provide everything from literacy support for primary school students to employability skills training. It helps us to build a pipeline of young diverse talent who can access careers with us.

Through Lloyd’s Charities Trust, we’re supporting RedR, the international disaster relief charity, to help build the capacity of humanitarians to respond to disasters. Helping people who’ve been affected by a disaster being a cause very close to our hearts. A few figures: over the last three years we have trained 1,780 aid workers from 160 organisations in 104 countries and over the next three years we’ll be helping to increase the ability of a further 2,000 individuals

and organisations to prepare for and respond to emergencies, especially in urban centres.

We also have a Lloyd’s Code of Conduct, which everyone who joins us signs. From our Living Wage Employer Accreditation to our Speaking Up policy, which allows people across the business to voice any concerns, we make sure this code is upheld across Lloyd’s.

We take our corporate responsibilities very seriously, be they social, ethical or environmental.

Mollie Muscutt“While I was at university, I interned as a data analyst, so I was able to pick up a lot of information about the different financial services graduate programmes out there. Looking over the options, I was drawn to the insurance industry in particular because of the variety of work it involved. I chose the Lloyd’s graduate programme because I liked the idea of doing a broad range of different placements.

The programme has been great so far: I’m constantly learning and the work is varied and genuinely interesting. In particular, the

culture here has been excellent right from the start. Assessment centres are usually extremely stressful, but at the Lloyd’s assessment day, everyone was so friendly and approachable that I actually had a really positive experience. And that atmosphere’s remained throughout my time here: all the teams I’ve worked with have been supportive and genuinely fun to work with.”

Mollie joined the Lloyd’s graduate programme in 2015, after graduating from Sheffield Hallam University with a BSc in Mathematics.

“Teams who are supportive and genuinely fun to work with.”

Space tourism. It could soon be a reality. And when pioneering organisations need cover for their passengers, they know exactly where to come. In an average year, our specialist space underwriters already provide satellite owners and users with protection worth more than US$7bn.

If you’re in your penultimate year at university you have a further option. You can join us for a paid summer internship, running for eight weeks from June to August.

You’ll be placed in a single business area, either in the marketplace or in the Lloyd’s corporation itself. Here you’ll have real responsibility and the

opportunity to build up your skills and experience, either on particular projects or helping out with everyday operations.

Wherever you’re placed, you’ll benefit from an enlightening introduction not just to Lloyd’s of London, but to the specialist insurance industry as a whole. Through networking sessions

and workshops you’ll also start to build a network of contacts; invaluable as you start to think about the world of work.

If the experience kindles your interest in Lloyd’s and we impress each other, we may also offer you a place on the following year’s Graduate programme.

At Lloyd’s, we want to be a driving force for increasing diversity in our industry. Two years ago, we launched the Inclusion@Lloyd’s initiative. Since then, 85% of companies in the market have signed up to our charter. This year, we’ve produced the first ever report on Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) in the Lloyd’s market, and launched our Dive In festival globally.

Aimed at the 34,000 people working in the market, the inaugural festival was held in London and included 40 speakers, 1,762 attendees and even 46 dancers. It resulted in 23,190 visits to the Dive In website – and over 90% of those attending confirming their understanding of Diversity and Inclusion had improved as a result.

From the keynote speech by our CEO Inga Beale at the Stonewall Workplace conference this year, to our extensive training of all interviewing managers to help ensure D&I is at the top of the agenda during recruitment, we’re focused on making Lloyd’s an even more inclusive place to work across the globe.

Our five employee networks run a wide range of events throughout the year, providing lots of ways for you to get involved:

Cyber terrorism. It could plunge a major city into darkness. Or compromise the security of a major high street bank. At Lloyd’s, we’re always pioneering new forms of insurance for a rapidly changing technological landscape, ensuring that online risks don’t hamper progress in cyber space.

How to apply

Your first step is to do some judicious research. Visit the Lloyd’s website as it gives a wealth of information on who we are and what we do.

When we come to interview you, we won’t of course expect you to be an insurance expert, and we certainly won’t be testing your knowledge of the industry. But we will be looking for ambition, a willingness to learn and a genuine interest in insurance.

The application process

There are three main steps.

– Visit the Graduates section of our website and complete the application form and test online.

– If you’re successful, we’ll contact you to take part in a live video interview.

– Next, we’ll ask you to complete four psychometric tests online.

– Impress us, and we’ll invite you to attend an assessment centre at Lloyd’s.

For the key application dates, and more details on each of these stages, just go to

www.lloyds.com/graduates You will also find information there about summer internships.

We’re proud that virtually everyone who has joined our Graduate programme in previous years has been inspired to stay and make their future in or around the Lloyd’s market.

So if, like most of our applicants, you’ve never even thought about a career in insurance, don’t let that be a barrier.

As you’ll have gathered, we welcome ambitious people from a variety of backgrounds, studying a wide variety of subjects into this fascinating and rewarding career.

If that sounds intriguing, we look forward to meeting you.

2726

Time for Lloyd’s to empower your progress?

An inclusive process

We want to make sure that no-one is (or feels) excluded from our application process. So we’ve designed it to be as open, accessible and welcoming as possible.

First of all, you’ll have one point of contact through the whole recruitment process – someone you know by name, who you can call or email directly if you’ve got any queries or questions.

This single contact is the person you should talk to if you’ll need the application process adjusted in some way. (If, for example, you are dyslexic, or partially sighted). We’ll go out of our way to make reasonable adjustments.

This is a very personal application process. We use very few automated emails, and our assessments are mostly based on face-to-face verbal contact, so they’re friendly and flexible.

We’re very keen that people from the widest range of backgrounds bring their talents to the Lloyd’s market. So we’ve specially designed the assessment process to make sure that those with work experience at Lloyd’s or within insurance in general won’t have an advantage over those who are coming to the industry afresh.
