CONCORD, NH – Governor JohnLynch announced Nov. 24 four NewHampshire companies have beenawarded Job Training grants in themonth of November, which will helpto train 90 New Hampshire workers innew skills. The grants total more than$67,000.
Job Training grants are aimed atkeeping good jobs in New Hampshireby helping companies train theirworkers with new skills to compete ina changing economy. Governor Lynchmade it a priority to reinstate the JobTraining Fund, which distributes up to$1 million annually in matching grantsto allow companies to train newworkers or retrain longtime employees.
Since the Job Training Fund wasreinstated in late 2007, more than7,900 workers from across NewHampshire have received training andenhanced skills through the matchinggrant program.
"New Hampshire has the fourthlowest unemployment rate in thecountry, and we continue to lead the
region and the nation in economicrecovery. If we are to continue to be anational leader, we must continue tomake wise investments in our workersthrough job training to ensure that ascompanies are hiring, we have theskilled workforce in place to fill thosejobs," Governor Lynch said.
The November 2010 recipients of theJob Training grants are TimkenAerospace in Lebanon, Telcordia ofManchester, Resource Laboratories inPortsmouth and Labsphere in NorthSutton.
Since the Job Training Fund wasre-established, companies from acrossNew Hampshire have received stategrants totaling more than $2.8 million.Companies receiving grants havecontributed more than $5 million,bringing the total amount invested innew training for workers to nearly $8million.

The two organizations sponsor theVolunteer Income Tax Assistance andAARP Tax Aide programs, whichprovide free tax return preparationassistance to people who qualify.Groups include seniors, persons withdisabilities, low-to-moderate incomeindividuals and families, and peoplewith limited English proficiency.
The goal is to educate taxpayers aboutthe many credits and deductions thatmay help increase their refunds,especially the Earned Income TaxCredit.

Thereal ultimatum that managementputs before the HM is to findsolutions. A good example of howgiving out jobs and finding solutionsmight not go together is: a HMawards a job to a candidate whoproves not to be able to do the job.She didn’t supply a solution for herteam or the company; she just gaveout a job—every HM’s nightmare!The overwhelming response to thisHM’s challenge for a solution is astack of resumes that are very similar,in that they faithfully list all the tasksthat someone with that job wouldhave to do, and which they havedone. That makes the content of allthese resumes frighteninglyidentical. Which means the HMeither has 100 solutions, or she hasnone. Chances are, she has none.Being the SolutionWhen you send a resume that is alist of tasks you can perform, you are,in effect, promising that you will beat your position so many hours a day,and execute the standard tasks thatget this job done. This is prettyuninspiring, since in most of our jobsthere is much more involved than thestandard tasks. What about “puttingout fires,” or “addressing conflicts,”or “making changes,” or“innovating,” or “pursuingexcellence?” None of these are on thestandard job-task list. They are on
the solution list!The HM has a whole lot of resumesfrom people who believe they can dothe tasks. If she is lucky, she also mayhave a few from those who caninnovate, and be creative in theirwork, and make forward-thinkingdecisions...and can learn to do thedaily tasks, if necessary. These are thequalities she is looking for in her newhire. Perhaps you have them, but arethey represented on your resume? Ifnot, you probably won’t be thesolution.Think like a Hiring ManagerHere is a list of questions to askyourself about being the solution.They point to activities a HM wouldconsider in assessing a candidate:• Have I ever discovered a moreefficient way of completing a task,and perhaps, bringing a product to aclient early?• Have I ever thought ahead on aproject and discovered a probabledanger my team was headed for, andworked on avoiding it with the teamlead?• Have I ever brought a tense,troubled client or co-workerdisagreement to a successful, happyending?• Have I ever invited teamcollaboration on a task or projectthat would benefit from a surplus ofideas?• Have I ever stood out as a leaderand had complete support from myteam?• Have I ever designed – or

This is not to say that jobseekers arehopeless without robust search resultsfor their names. By no means are yourequired to have a LinkedIn or Twitterprofile, and you certainly don't need aprofessionally produced YouTubevideo attributed to your name.

Swearing,posting party photos, talking poorlyabout work - all of these things giverecruiters an excuse to weed you out ofthe job search.
With the popularity and globalacceptance of social media, the fineline between professional and personallife has been demolished. It is pivotalfor job seekers to evaluate the messagethey are communicating online.
"Obviously most companiesunderstand conceptually that plenty ofemployees have faked being sick, havedrank too much and so on," saysPacchione. "Posting photos and statusupdates online communicates a certainpoor judgment that employersgenerally try to avoid."

ET: What has your recent hiring beenlike? Where can candidates makethemselves better stand out for thisposition (experience? skills?certifications?)?
LLB: We just completed hiring forour holiday peak season. We hirecall center reps, retail store reps,pickers, packers, monogrammers,and material handlers to help ushandle the increased holidaybusiness. We were again successfulin hiring for all of these positionsthis year. What seems to surprisecandidates the most is that all of ourjobs, even in the warehouse, require
some computer usage. Candidatesshould consider taking a computercourse, especially if they have neverhad the opportunity to use acomputer in a work experience.
We are looking for bothexperienced leather cutters andstitchers for the current openings.We have high production standardsand aggressive goals to meet and arelooking for employees who haveestablished skills in these areas.
ET: What other qualities are youlooking for in an employee?

the truth is that employers want employee input. Think about it. Work is generally a set of goals and the action it takes to get those goals accomplished.
There will be problems along the way—guaranteed. Suggestions can help employers solve those problems more easily, more effi ciently and more
economically. You have to offer your suggestion with sincerity, and that means that you’re making the suggestion because you truly believe in it— that
you are not using it merely as a vehicle to get ahead. Not that there’s anything wrong with getting ahead, but others can smell self-interest in a
suggestion. Try to keep your motivation as pure as possible. Here are a few tips from 1001 Ways to Take Initiative at Work, by Bob Nelson:
Making a suggestion concerning the area where you work is a good idea. Why? Because it’s likely you know the area well, and therefore you’ll probably make a good decision. You’ll want to look for ways to save money, improve a service or streamline
processes. Think about your ideas, and if possible, test them out.
If you’re going to make a suggestion, make sure you also have a way to implement it. Nelson says that you need to be careful that your suggestion doesn’t inad vertently come off sounding like a complaint. Think your plan through. Who would be
involved? How much would it cost? What are the benefits? Then vol unteer to work on bringing the idea to fruition.
Develop yourself as a “suggestor.” Think about the
possibilities and try to come up with at least two sug gestions
per week— even if you end up not pitching them. Carry a
pad and pencil with you so you can jot down your thoughts.
You’d be surprised at the great ideas that people think of that are lost in the minutiae of the day because the person didn’t
take the time to write them down. Be supportive of others’ suggestions when you think they are good ideas. This will
help you develop important alliances at work— and the goodwill of your co-workers when you launch your own suggestions.

Seasonally-Adjusted Statewide DataHousehold Survey – The preliminaryunemployment rate for Maine was 7.4percent in October, down from 7.7percent in September and 8.1 percent ayear ago. The number of unemployedtotaled 51,100, down 6,000 from a yearago.“Declines in the unemployment rate thelast three months are due to acombination of factors, includingmodest job growth and individualsleaving the labor force to attend schoolor for other reasons such asdiscouragement over job prospects,”Fortman said. To be counted asunemployed an individual must haveengaged in job search activities duringthe month. “As the pace of the recoverypicks up in the months ahead, theunemployment rate may rise asthousands re-enter the labor force.”The national unemployment rate was9.6 percent for the third consecutivemonth, down from 10.1 percent a yearago. The New England average was 8.2percent. Other states in the region were5.4 percent in New Hampshire, 5.7percent in Vermont, 8.1 percent inMassachusetts, 11.4 percent in Rhode
Island, and 9.1 percent in Connecticut.Payroll Survey of Businesses – Therewere 592,500 nonfarm payroll jobs inOctober, up 4,200 over the month. Thenumber of jobs has moved up and downin a small range in 2010, remaining closeto the level at the end of 2009.Nationally, nonfarm payroll jobsincreased 151,000 in October.Not Seasonally-Adjusted SubstateDataThe not seasonally-adjusted statewideunemployment rate was 6.7 percent inOctober, down from 7.5 percent a yearago. The Maine Department of Corrections is seeking qualified applicants forthe position of Psychologist IV of the Maine State Prison. The Maine StatePrison complex is located in Warren, Maine, includes the BolducCorrectional Facility, and is the largest of the state’s correctional facilities.This is an excellent career opportunity to work in an evolving andchanging organization, and to demonstrate the ability to provideleadership to staff and foster cooperation and teamwork.
As the senior psychologist at the State’s maximum security prison,responsibilities include:
• Conducting and/or supervising complete psycho diagnostic andpsycho therapeutic programs;

Qualifications:
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a clinical psychologistincluding one (1) year in an administrative or supervisory capacity;
• Bachelor’s degree supplemented by graduate level courses to thelevel of a Ph.D. with specialization in clinical psychology or aclosely allied field;
• One (1) year of supervised clinical experience (or internship)
• Licensure as a Doctoral Level Psychologist as issued by the MaineState Board of Examiners in Psychology.
