Five steps to take whenconsidering a career change(ARA) – Is this the right time for you to
follow your passion or to reinvent yourself
and make a career change? If so, make sure
you can put your finger on what you want, so
that you can sell yourself to prospective
employers.
Carole Redden, director of career services at
Brown Mackie College - Phoenix, offers five
career-change tips.
Network with a mission
Networking is vital to reinventing yourself
or making a career move, but according to
Redden, it should be done strategically and
often. “You cannot wait for the job of your
dreams to come to you,” says Redden.
“There are people who attend networking
events and do not maximize the number of
people they talk to, or do not ask the right
questions. If you are looking for a job, you
must have a plan.”

networking events and job fairs, and keep
the conversation brief and to the point.
Develop a relationship with employer
representatives you chat with and remember,
it’s not just about what you can get from
them, but what they can gather from you. It’s
a two-way exchange of information. To learn
more about networking strategies read
“Never Eat Alone,” where author Keith
Ferrazzi contends that you’ll be more
successful if you take the relationship-
building approach. “You should circulate and
make multiple new contacts at these events,”
Redden says. Those who are unsure about
how to network should think of it as
“purposeful and engaging communication.”
Most people have more of a network of
friends, family, former coworkers and other
connections than they realize. It’s important
to share your plans with them and ask for
help. “If you don’t already have a network, try
volunteering or going back to school - both
are great ways to meet new people,” Redden
adds.
Examine your skills and resources
You don’t have to be stuck in a job. Be
proactive. Do a personal assessment and ask
yourself: What background, skills and
experience can I offer an employer? “If
you’ve been in a job for 20 years, ask yourself,
‘What do I really want to do for a living?’,”
says Redden. “Make some changes and some
tough decisions. It may not be easy, but it’s
worth it. Job seeking takes patience.”
Update your credentials
Many jobs require additional education or
training. Take classes at local college, or a
community or education center. Some
nonprofit organizations offer free or low-
cost training. If required, obtain certification
for your chosen field. “Once you have a
developed your ‘brand,’ you’ve got to make
yourself more marketable than the next
person,” says Redden.
Pursue your passion/your goal
A career is more than a job; for some it’s also
a passion, and the career path chosen will
require some work. “Some people get so
caught up in life pleasing others and forget
they have the option to do what makes them
happy,” says Redden. If you are out of work,
be more diligent. Until you get to where you
want to go, you should be willing to work
harder in pursuing your passion. The
practice of reinvention takes effort. For
people who like delivering babies, they are
happy when they go to work every morning
because they have a passion for what they do.
Volunteer with nonprofits
Use your weekends to volunteer. “This is an
opportunity to support those nonprofits that
could benefit from your experience,” says
Redden. With reinvention, you can still give
back and offer to help those who are less
fortunate. You will gain valuable work
experience in your career of choice.
You can take the Myers-Briggs professional
or similar assessments offered by many
college career and employment counselors to
measure competencies and areas of interest.
“If you want a life change, then it’s up to you
to do something about it,” says Redden. Be
realistic about your strengths, skills and
resources. Within reason and with passion,
reinventing yourself is possible.

Six things youngadults shouldknow aboutmanaging theirhealth care(ARA) - Despite perceptions that young adultsconsider themselves young and invincible, themajority of Americans aged 18 to 26 are takingan active role in maintaining their health.
Two out of three young adults have a usualsource of health care, and most are seeing aphysician at least once a year for wellness examsand other preventive services, according to anationwide poll conducted by HarrisInteractive on behalf of the American Academyof Family Physicians (AAFP).
“Young adults seem to understand thecorrelation between having an ongoingrelationship with a primary care physician andcreating a healthy future,” says Dr. RolandGoertz, president of the AAFP. “Butunfortunately, when it comes to managing theirhealth, they, like many others, often lack theexperience or desire to navigate the complexhealth care system.”
The health care reform law now enables youngadults, up to age 26, to be covered under theirparent or guardian’s insurance plan.

When you need to get your team brainstorming new ideas, you might want to suggest this exercise. Give each person anotebook and pen and ask them to write “What if …” atthe top of the page. Then have them write 10 sentencesthat being with “What if …”
Allow everyone time to comeup with ideas, but ask themto try to come up with 10sentences even if what theywrite down seemsridiculous.
This helps loosen everyoneup and sets the tone inwhich real creativitycan flourish.

Mike Litman, the co-author of the bestselling book“Conversations with Millionaires”, says that there was asix-or-seven year period in his life when he had lots ofgreat ideas– but he never did anything about them. Henever followed through on anything.
Litman says he was 27 years old and very scattered. Evenhis own parents, he says, had their doubts about hisfuture.
So what finally changed his life? Litman says it wasthrowing out the principle of waiting until everythingwas perfect before taking action. He said, instead hebegan following the “You don't have to get it right, youjust have to get going” principle.
Litman says this was the beginning of a great period ofpersonal growth for him—and then the money startedto pour in. Litman says to ask yourself this simplequestion: “What action step have I been putting offbecause I've waited for it to be perfect that I could starttoday?”
And then, of course, go do it.
Staying positive can be hard in today's world, buthere's one small way to work a little positivity in yourdaily routine. Each day, before you sit down to work, grab a small piece of paper and write a nicethought down about someone you work with. Later, when you see that person, work your positivethought into your conversation. It's a small way ofmaking the world just a little nicer, and it just takes aminute to plan and a short time to deliver.

Once you’ve chosen a style
(formal, informal,
professional, elegant, etc.)
you’ll need to make sure you
have dates for all the
positions you’ve held that you
intend to include. A good
rule of thumb to follow is to
list the last ten years of
employment unless you have
had more than five positions
in those ten years. If you
have had five positions in the
last five or six years then list
only those, but be prepared
to answer questions from
your interviewer on why you

The interviewer may not use
that term exactly, but that is
what they are thinking, so

coordinate care across all settings,
including doctors' offices, hospitals and
many other services that make up our
complex and confusing health care
system. Key medical home technologies,
such as electronic health records, enable
health care professionals to communicate
with one another and stay updated on
mutual patients' medical conditions and
courses of treatment. This eliminates
duplication, lowers costs and improves
quality and patient satisfaction.
• Be open and honest with your doctor
Taking an active role in your health care
can help you get the best care possible. Be
sure to disclose any current and past
health care issues or concerns. It’s
important to share any information you
have, even if you’re embarrassed.
• Ask questions
Don’t be afraid to speak up if you have
questions or concerns. It’s important to let
your doctor know if you don’t understand
something. If you have questions before
your appointment, write them down and
ask them during the exam. Be sure to
write down the most important questions
first to make sure they get answered, and
tell your doctor when you need more time
to talk.
• Play an active role in your medical
decision making
Research shows that patients who are
more involved with their care tend to get
better results. You have a say in your
medical treatment. If you aren’t
comfortable with a prescribed course of
treatment – like taking medicine,
scheduling a test or scheduling an
appointment with a specialist – let your
doctor know. Patients and doctors who
share decision making are more likely to
identify treatment plans they can both
agree on.
• Make sure your personal doctor is in
charge of your care
This is especially important if you have
many health problems or are in a hospital.
Make sure that all members of your health
care team know about all prescriptions
and over-the-counter medicines you are
taking, including dietary supplements
such as vitamins and herbs. Also, make
sure your doctor knows about any allergies
and adverse reactions you’ve had.
Understand your medical bills and keep
medical paperwork organized. Learn to
read and understand medical bills and
explanations of benefits to know what's
covered, what not covered, and why.
Consolidate your medical care, health
history and medical records, and organize
your medical paperwork so you can review
it easily if questions arise. Keep your
medical receipts if you have a health
savings account; you may be need to show
them for tax purposes.

Career Change.....
What, in fact, does it mean to be reasonable? What does it mean to be unreasonable?
And what does it mean to reason?
According to James Allen in “As a Man Thinketh”, when we declare someone as being
unreasonable, we usually mean that he or she is violating the ideal of thinking about
something and arriving at the “truth” of a situation by using intellect.
So it follows that people who are dubbed reasonable in situations are looked upon as
using their higher powers of intellect to make a decision and in ways that are likely
considered gentle and compassionate.
Now, we've all been unreasonable in life at one time or another-that is we've lost touch
with our higher selves and resorted to our lower faculties during which we behaved in
ways that were likely considered unthinking and selfish. Most people feel unhappy or
undone when they abandon reason for something more akin to animal behavior. But
how does a person remain reasonable throughout some of the stressful sit¬uations that
seem to be just around each corner in life? Here are some tips for trying to maintain
your equilibrium in life's trials:
• Stop before you speak or act. Think about what you are about to say or do?
Is it unkind? Is it vengeful? Is it self-centered? If so, you may have just thrown
off the cloak of reason and donned unreasonableness.
• Is what you are considering saying or doing sweet and forgiving? Is it gently
persuasive?
• Is what you are about to do or say based on any type of prejudice?
• Are you trying to prove or disprove something?
• Have you carefully weighed and considered everything important about the
situation?
• Is what you are about to do or say kind, moderate and just?
A guidetoprosperity
According to Shakti Gawain, a personal growth and spirituality expert, prosperity is not something that you will ever achieve. Insteadit is a gentle unfolding of finding fulfillment – that grows deeper with passing time. Gawain says that there are seven elements in the journey to experiencing true prosperity. Seekers may find themselves focusing onthese elements in any order, one at a time, in combination or even all at once. Here are the steps:
• Experience gratitude. Gawain says that compared to the circumstances that most humans have lived in the past and that themajority of people still exist in today, that Westerners are very well off. Even though we each have our particular sets of problems we have to deal with, we are still truly materially fortunate people. One way to encourage gratefulness is to recognize what we are
grateful for and write a list of those thingsdown. Then you will truly appreciate what youalready have. • Become more aware of how you feel aboutprosperity. We all have beliefs and experiences that limitus. Do you have feelings of unworthiness, areyou afraid of failure or success, are youconflicted about money? All of these things canaffect our fulfillment in life. We have alsofocused on certain aspects of our personalitiesand ignored others. This means that we areoften out of balance when it comes to feeling orbeing prosperous. When we are young, oftentimes we are unaware of our unconsciousbeliefs or behavioral patterns. As we grow andbecome more aware of these things, we openourselves to the possibility of living our lives inthe way we desire. This is often anuncomfortable step on the road to prosperity.
• Make healing yourself a goal in your life.According to Gawain, there are four levels ofhealing in the spiritual, mental, emotional andphysical aspects of life. She says that weintuitively know what is right for us, and weshould trust ourselves on this.
• Follow your own truth. Pay attention to howyou feel. Listen to your intuition. And then, take the risk and act on what you feel is true foryourself. In other words: Pay attention to yourinner wisdom.
• Know what the term “prosperous” means to you. Create a vision of your prosperity. What does itlook like? How do you feel? What work do youdo? What relationships would you have?Imagine how things would be if you achievedprosperity. Gawain says you have to be able tofully imagine something before there is achance at its manifestation.
• Set goals. Think long and short term. Writegoals for one year, two years, five years and 10years. Gawain says to be careful here, and notto cling too closely to your goals or what youwant. Look at them and then let them go. Sometimes are better in life to focus on goals, andother times are better for wandering throughlife and making discoveries. You have to decidewhat applies to you.
• Share your gifts with the world. You willfind that you have talent and that you aresharing it when you follow what is in yourheart. Figure out what you love to do, andchances are that is what you will end up doing.

A major component of successful job hunting ismarketing you. Through your cover letter, resume, andinterview, you have built a positive image of the typeof employee you will be - enthusiastic, knowledgeable, organized, resourceful, etc. So far the potentialemployer likes that image and can picture you in theposition. So when he/she checks your references, youwant to make sure that what they say about you isconsistent with your own marketing message of whatkind of employee you are.Take the following steps to help ensure that yourreferences are appropriately prepared for the call andincrease your chances of getting the job.
1. Ask for permission to use his/her name as areference. Don't assume that you can list a formersupervisor or colleague as a reference without asking. Some companies have strict policies that all referencechecks must go through the human resourcesdepartment. Some individuals will not feel comfortableacting as a reference for you - maybe because theyhaven't worked with you for a sufficient period of time.So ask the person if he/she is willing to be a referencefor you and allow a graceful way for the person to say,“no”. If you don't get an enthusiastic, “Yes, I'd bedelighted to be a reference!” response to your request, thank him/her and move on to ask someone else. Becreative. All of your references do not have to be yourdirect supervisors. How about the company owner, other managers, co-workers at your level, people whoyou have supervised, vendors and even clients? Anyonewho knows your work well over a significant period oftime can be an excellent reference. As a hiringmanager, I felt more confident in my decision about acandidate when I had received positive feedback fromseveral different perspectives during the referencechecks.2. Make sure your references will be reachable.Be sure to provide accurate contact information foryour references and include multiple methods- phone number(s), mailing address, fax number, and email address. When you are asked to provideyour references, contact the individuals first and checkto make sure they will be reachable and working (e.g.,not on vacation or out of the country) during the nextfew days. Be sure to have an alternate reference in mindas a backup if needed.3. Give your references a copy of your currentresume. Make sure that all of your references have acopy of your current resume, so that everyone has thesame information regarding your accomplishments, education, skills, and job titles.4. Send your references a copy of the classifiedad/job posting. Let your references know about theposition that you are going after, the organization, position title, qualifications, responsibilities, etc. If youhave a copy of the classified advertisement or jobposting that you originally responded to - or if youreceived a more detailed job description at theinterview - fax or email a copy to your references, sothey have a clear understanding of the position beforethey are called. Point out how your previous positionprepared you for this new job. Identify similarities infunctions and responsibilities that your references canmention when asked what you did when you worked attheir organization.5. Give your references tips on “hot buttons.” Thinkback on the interview(s) and remember what specificanswers, examples or experience seemed to get themost positive response from the interviewer. Whatwere you saying when his/her head nodded inagreement? What accomplishment on your resume didthe interviewer seem most interested in and want tohear more about? What were you saying when he/shewas taking notes? Those are your “hot buttons” - theunique points that advanced you to this final stage -and could be deciding factors in whether you get thejob or not. Identifying your “hot buttons” and sharingthese with your references is an important way topresent a strong and consistent image of yourself.

Balancing Act: Tips for adult learners juggling the responsibilities of work and school(NewsUSA) – Balancing work and the
commitment of earning an advanced
degree can be daunting. But it is a reality
many adult learners face as they continue
their education while juggling personal,
family and financial responsibilities.
The good news is that there are many tips
and resources available to help ease stress
and make balancing work and school
manageable.
1. Capitalize on flexible class scheduling.
An increasing number of colleges and
universities are tailoring education to suit
working students' schedules. DeVry
University, for example, offers flexible
scheduling in a "mix and match" format
that allows students to enroll in a
combination of onsite or online courses
during the day or evening, based on
convenience.
2. Make a schedule and stay organized.
A calendar that outlines upcoming work
and school projects, meetings and
deadlines takes little time to create and can
make a busy schedule feel under control.
“Time management is an essential quality
and core competency for most
professionals, and this will be a good test of
one's mettle,” explained Jeffrey Greenberg,
director of career services for DeVry
University. “This skill gets easier over time
and will ensure that your work does not
pile up, preventing you from meeting
deadlines.”
3. Address your stress.
The weight of multiple obligations can be
overwhelming. It’s important to take
breaks to obtain a fresh perspective.
Exercise and social interaction provide the
perfect opportunity to relieve stress and
refocus your thoughts, allowing you to
return to coursework with a clear mind and
renewed sense of energy.
4. Take advantage of your school’sresources.
The network of classmates and professors
your school offers can provide support and
advice for balancing work and school. The
economic recession has led many schools
to launch career services departments or
strengthen existing ones.
5. Create a support network.
Harness the support of friends and family,
and see if they can help you accomplish
your goals. This support could be
something as simple as meeting with a
roommate to plan household chores or
meals for the month.
It is important to remember that the hard
work and sacrifice required to balance
work and school often lead to career
success.
If you have a deadline, butyou can't seem to get startedon your project, you mightneed to step back and seewhat is paralyzing you. Startby assessing why you areunable to act. Ask yourselfthe following questions:
• What am I afraid of? Am I afraid of learning new material? Venturing into unfamiliarterritory? Trying and failing? Looking foolish in front of my peers?
• What is the worst that can happen if you fail? Could you lose your job? Could yoube demoted? It's most likely that you are afraid of appearing foolish, or you aremerely afraid of the idea of failing. Most people have these same fears, and once yourealize that you are not alone in your fears, you may be able to move on unimpeded.
• How do I want to live my life? While this question may seem all-encompassing, youmay find that answering it helps you solidify your values. Do you want fear to ruleyour life? Do you want to face difficulties head on and get them out of the way?
• What do you want to accomplish? Is your behavior impeding your career path? If itis, and you can see that clearly, the knowledge may give you the little push you needto move on and take action.
