Lesson 2

Objective: Students will be able to interpret Help Wanted ads, including requirements for the job and how to apply.

Topic: Help wanted ads

Structures: Modals: must, have to, don’t have to, can

Vocabulary: required vs preferred,

Materials: 5 handouts, 4 large Help Wanted Ads

Before Classu Make a class set of Handout 1, a list of common Help Wanted abbreviations.

v Make half a class set of Handout 2, a sheet of classified ads.

w Make half a class set of Handout 3, ten questions about the ads.

x Create or obtain four large Help Wanted ads to be taped to the classroom walls.

y Copy 1/5 of a class set of Handout 4 – a form for each Team Writer to use in a “corners” activity.

z Copy a class set of Handout 5, a practice test with four new classified ads and a place to write the perti-nent information about each job.

Lesson 2Warm Up: Brainstorm with students about different ways a person might find a job in the U.S. Networking is the most popular – getting help from people you know. Some people find jobs by “walk ins” – they walk in off the street and ask if there are any openings. There are also WorkSource centers, the state Employment Devel-opment Dept. (EDD), private employment agencies, and classified ads, either in newspapers or online websites. Write a few examples on the board. Explain that for this lesson we are going to focus on Help Wanted ads.

Introduction: Ask how many students have looked at classified ads in a newspaper or an online website. Ask them for some abbreviations that are typically used in job ads. (PT, FT, Exp. Nec.) Write the abbreviations along with the complete words on the board. Write as many as students can come up with easily.

Presentation: 1. Distribute the list of common abbreviations (Handout 1). Have students work in pairs to write the com-

plete words for the 21 common abbreviations. Go over correct answers with the class.

2. Explain the difference between “required” and “preferred”. Put on the board a list of other words that mean the same as “required”. (Necessary, must, have to, needed, minimum). Then list other words that mean “preferred”. (Desired, helpful, a plus). Give an example or two of what is required for specific jobs, and what kind of skills, experience or knowledge might be preferred (but not required) for that job.

3. Make a list of different ways one might be asked to apply for a job. Let students offer examples. Write all the ways on the board. (Apply in person, call for an application, fax resume, apply online, call for appoint-ment.)

Lesson 2

Guided Practice: Arrange students in pairs, Student A and Student B. Distribute a set of classified ads to Stu-dent A (Handout 2). Distribute a set of ten questions about the ads to Student B (Handout 3). Give them ten minutes to practice the questions and answers about the four jobs. Then have students reverse roles and ask the ten questions again.

Communicative Practice: Team Task Arrange students into teams of five. Assign one student as the writer for the team. This is a “corners” activity in which Help Wanted ads are placed on the walls in four different areas of the room. The team writer is responsi-ble for writing the job titles, work schedules and how to apply for the four jobs on the walls (Handout 4). Each of his teammates is responsible for going to one of the ads, memorizing the information and telling it to the writer.

(Optional: to make it more fun, you might offer a prize to the team that finishes first without any mistakes in their final information.)

Evaluation: Distribute Handout 5, four more Help Wanted ads. Have students read the ads and answer the questions at the bottom of the page regarding the requirements, work schedule, and how to apply for each job.

Application: Bring in a few pages of the Help Wanted section of a newspaper. Or, if students have Internet access, direct them to a common job search website. Have them search for examples of jobs they would like to apply for. (They don’t have to be currently qualified. It’s just an exercise.) Ask individual students to read their job opening ads to the class.

Lesson 5A Resume

Objective: Students will be able to create a simple resume.

Topic: Resumes

Structures: Verb tense review

Vocabulary: Objectives versus long term goals, chronological order, job skills, character adjectives.

Materials: 7 Handouts

Before Class

u Copy a class set of Handout 1, a list of jobs with beginning and ending dates.

v Copy a class set of Handout 2, a reading about job skills.

w Copy half a class set of Handout 3, a blank but formatted resume, and Handout 4, a list of information to put into the resume.

x Copy half a class set of Handout 5, the work history and job skills of Laura Diaz, and half a class set of Handout 6, a blank but formatted work history and skills section of a resume.

y Copy a class set of Handout 7, a poorly done resume with lots of mistakes.

Lesson PlanWarm Up: Ask if anyone has ever written a resume. If so, ask what kind of job they were applying for. (If not, ask what kind of jobs usually require a resume.) Write some examples on the board.

Introduction: Explain the difference between a resume objective (a job you want, and are qualified for, now) and a long term goal (a job you might want in the future when you have enough education, training or ex-perience). Ask students to pretend they are looking for a job now. Ask them to write what their objective is. Explain the idea of “an entry level position” a beginning job in a field that is new for them, or that they want to get in to.

Presentation: Explain the concept of chronological order (time order from first to last) and reverse chronolog-ical order (last to first). Explain that jobs in resumes, like job applications, should be listed in reverse chrono-logical order – starting with current or most recent. Distribute Handout 1, a list of jobs with their beginning and ending dates. Ask students to put the jobs into correct (reverse chronological) order.

Comprehension Check: Have student volunteers write the jobs in the correct order on the board.

Presentation: Distribute Handout 2, a reading about job skills. Have students do the exercise at the end of the reading.

Guided Practice: Distribute Handout 3, a blank resume with each line of the resume numbered. Show the parts of the resume in as much detail as you think necessary. Then distribute Handout 4, ten lines of informa-tion about Elina Goldova. Ask students to decide where on the resume (which line) each piece of information belongs.

Lesson 5A Resume

Communicative Practice: Divide class into pairs. Distribute Handout 5, a reading about the work history and job skills of Laura Diaz, to one half of the pair. Distribute Handout 6, the work history section of a resume. Student B should ask the necessary questions and fill out the sections of the resume for Student A (pretending to be Laura.

Evaluation: Distribute Handout 7, a poorly done resume with lots of mistakes. Ask students to circle and count the mistakes on the resume.

Application: Ask students to write a resume objective for themselves. Then make a list of their work history, education and skills and put their information into a resume format. They should end with a simple, one page resume for themselves.

Handout 2Skills or Duties

Skills are things you can or know how to do. They are things that not everyone can do. Job skills are skills you can use on a specific job. Playing the guitar is a skill. It can be a job skill if you are a professional musician. Playing the radio, or listening to music is not a skill. Anyone can do it.

Duties are things that you do, or did, on a job as part of your job. Duties can be described in the present tense if you are describing a job you have now, or in the past tense for a job you did in the past.

Read the sentences below. Write “Job Skill”, “Duty”, or “Neither” for each.

u She can drive large trucks.

v He can watch TV.

w She delivered letters and packages.

x She cuts and colors women’s hair.

y He can cook all kinds of Mexican food.

z She translated documents from Russian to English.

{ He buys and sells used cars.

| He can eat all kinds of Italian food.

} She can use all Microsoft Office programs.

~ She answers phones, makes appointments and greets customers.

Laura Diaz

Laura Diaz has had only two jobs. Right now she is an Emergency Room Nurse. She started that job on Septem-ber 10, 2010. She works at West Hills Hospital. The hospital is in Canoga Park, at 21100 Sherman Way. Their zip code is 91303. She works evenings on this job, taking care of patients who have medical emergencies.

On her previous job she worked at the same hospital, but she worked in a different department. Her title was Delivery Room Nurse. She helped doctors deliver babies, and took care of newborn infants. She worked on that job for two years, from August, 2008 to August 2010. Now she is looking for a job in a doctor’s office. She has decided that working in a hospital is a very stressful place to work.
