GREATER TORONTO EDITION, MAY 25–JUNE 1, 2013

The new Ontario government plans to cre-ate an Ontario Music Fund that would help support and create jobs and position the province as a leading place to record and per-form music.

“Music is an integral part of Ontario’s cul-tural landscape and an innovative economic driver, creating jobs and stimulating growth,” said Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Michael Chan. “Home to a diverse industry that includes the Major Labels and our in-novative Independents, the new Ontario government’s Ontario Music Fund in concert with our Live Music Strategy represent a sig-nifi cant commitment by Ontario to strength-en our music industry, promote tourism and enhance our province’s profi le as a global music leader and premier music destination.”

The provincewide grant program would support new digital and record production and distribution of Canadian music, increase partnership opportunities, and promote On-tario’s music industry in Canada and around the globe.

“Our proposed provincewide fund would support new digital and record production,” said Minister of Finance Charles Sousa. “It would encourage distribution of Canadian music and help establish Ontario’s produc-tion studios as global leaders in the business

of master recordings. This would also create more job opportunities for artists, and the vast music industry that promotes them.”

It would also help the industry innovate, invest and take advantage of opportunities in the global music marketplace, bringing more business to Ontario.

“Music is a superpower that’s primed and ready to perform for Ontario,” said President of Music Canada Graham Henderson. “It’s a smart investment given the globally competi-tive advantage we have in the recorded and live music sectors. Research has shown that targeted support for music will pay off with enormous dividends including job growth, increased investment, tourism and the trans-

formation of Ontario into one of the recording capitals of the world. As we in the music com-munity like to say, music can help.”

Providing the music industry with neces-sary support is part of the government’s plan to help Ontario’s music artists and industry innovators succeed for a more prosperous and fair Ontario.

QUICK FACTS• The new Ontario Music Fund is a proposed

$45 million grant program over three years, starting in 2013–14.

• Ontario is home to Canada’s largest and one of the world’s most diversifi ed music sectors. According to Statistics Canada, On-tario’s music sector generated $429.3 mil-lion in revenues in 2011, accounting for 81.9 per cent of total national revenues.

• Economic growth and job creation are driv-en by business and entrepreneurs making investments. The government provides a favourable economic environment to help them succeed.

• The 2013 Budget will be presented to the On-tario Legislative Assembly on May 2, 2013. “On behalf of our 85 employees at Met-

alworks, I congratulate the Government of Ontario for its commitment to maintaining a vibrant music industry,” said CEO of Met-alworks Group Gil Moore. “As a result of today’s announcement, the industry will get a much-needed shot in the arm and the 220 students currently enrolled at Metalworks Institute of Sound and Music Production will be more likely to enjoy successful ca-reers in an industry that I have been fortu-nate to call my own since my days perform-ing with Triumph. Today is a great day for music in Ontario.” ●

Ontario is expanding Summer Company – a fl agship program for helping students launch start-up companies.

As part of the Youth Jobs Strategy an-nounced in Ontario’s 2013 Budget, 100 new spaces would be added to Summer Company this year, bringing the number of openings to 600. The number of spaces will increase again in 2014 and 2015.

Summer Company provides students age 15 to 29 hands-on coaching, mentoring and up to $3,000 to help them launch successful businesses.

“Today’s young people will be tomorrow’s business leaders and job creators,” said Min-ister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment Dr. Eric Hoskins. “Teaching them how to start companies while they are still in school will have a lasting impact on Ontario’s competitiveness, helping to create jobs and grow our economy.”

The Youth Jobs Strategy is part of the

government’s plan to help Ontario’s young people succeed and build a prosperous and fair province.

QUICK FACTS• This year’s application period is also being

extended to June 3, to give more students time to apply.

• About 4,400 students have participated in Summer Company since 2001.

• Successful businesses that started as Sum-mer Companies include Real Tech, Vidyard and Scarfone Photography.

• Last year, 89 per cent of participants said they planned to continue running their businesses part-time during school or again this summer.

• Announced in Ontario’s 2013 Budget, the Youth Jobs Strategy would be supported by a total investment of $295 million over two years, and would create 30,000 new em-ployment opportunities. ●

Ontario is ensuring that the people of this province have greater access to quality front-line health care by helping more nurses to en-ter the workforce.

The province is expanding the Nursing Graduate Guarantee so that new nursing graduates from other provinces and territo-ries have the opportunity to work in Ontario.

“Our Nursing Graduate Guarantee has been a tremendous success in helping nurs-es gain a foothold into their profession with some immediate hands-on experience,” said Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Deb Matthews. “We are now providing the same opportunity to new nurses who were edu-cated in other provinces and internationally to ensure Ontario has the best nursing work-force providing care to patients.”

As part of the Nursing Graduate Guaran-tee, the province is also creating the Nursing Career OrIENtation Initiative, an employ-ment initiative to help internationally edu-cated nurses transition to practise full-time in Ontario.

“The Nursing Career OrIENtation Initia-tive supports the vision of our Immigration Strategy and will benefi t Ontarians in many ways, from helping internationally educat-ed nurses achieve success and building our highly skilled workforce, while ensuring we have strong communities where the people of

Ontario can thrive,” said Minister of Citzen-ship and Immigration Michael Coteau.

These initiatives will provide nursing graduates educated outside of the province with an opportunity to gain employment and to work with experienced nurses to enhance their knowledge and skills.

“No one works more closely with patients than nurses,” said Executive Director of CARE Centre for Internationally Educated Nurses. “These initiatives will assist nurses who are new graduates and those who are new to On-tario to launch and continue a career in nursing while ensuring that the province has a stable workforce meeting the care needs of patients.”

Supporting nurses who are entering the workforce in Ontario is part of the govern-ment’s Action Plan for Health Care and its commitment to provide the right care, at the right time, in the right place.

QUICK FACTS• An average of 2,200 nurses are hired

through the Nursing Graduate Guarantee each year.

• Since 2007, more than 14,300 nurses have participated in the Nursing Graduate Guar-antee initiative.

• There are 16,400 more nurses working in Ontario since 2003.

• National Nursing Week is May 6-12, 2013. ●
