Empires: Colossus
Byzantine Cataphract Lancers
The following unit rules can be used for any army that was present pre 15th century. The
Empires: Colossus expansion is needed to use the contents of this unit update.
The Byzantine Cataphract Lancers were a form of heavy cavalry that were used in ancient
warfare. The cataphracts wore heavy scale armour which gave a high level of protection for
their horse and themselves in combat. The Byzantines were not the first to uses cataphracts,
other armies included: Scythians, Sarmatians, Armenian and even the Roman army. After seeing
the destructive power of the cataphract, the Roman army was to later create its own cataphract
unit to help combat the eastern powers. The main use for the cataphract unit was as a shock
troop; the lance and heavy armour enabled them to be most deadly when charging; the
Byzantines would later improve on this by adopting a wedge formation as to improve the
lancers destructive potential in the first strike of close combat.
