The greatest military genius in history

Alexander the Great

Page 2: Empires

By the age of 30 he had created one of the largest empires in ancient history.

Undefeated, he was considered one of the most successful commanders of all time.

He brought Greek ideas, culture, and lifestyle to the countries which he had conquered.

He also assured expansion of Roman civilization and Christianity which is now called the Western Civilization.

A brief history:

Alexander had destroyed the great Persian empire, which had been a constant threat to most cities of Greece.

He united vast regions what we now call Europe and Asia.

By doing so, he had deprived them not only of their independence, but their forms of government.

He did not create his vast empire entirely on his own. Most of him he had help with from his father Philip II. It was his father who had transformed a kingdom divided into the most powerful of the Greek states.

Determination:

Like most rulers in the ancient world, Alexander believed to be descended from semi divine beings.

In the final years of his life, Alexander was facing mutiny of the Macedonian troops. When he died, his empire had died with him.

After a series of civil wars the empire was divided.

Later on his empire became overrun by another great imperial power, Rome.

For centuries Alexander was seen as the sole conqueror in the memory of mankind.

He had become “The Great” not only because of his successes, but because of his vision of empire.

His greatness lies in what he intended to achieve.

“The greatest empire builder in the history of Europe thus becomes also its greatest explorer, traveler, and seeker after truth.”
