Empathy Unit

Let’s Read! • Choose your silent reading book and

let’s read for 10 minutes! • As you read, look for one important line

or quote that you will share with a partner after the reading!

• After the reading, you will PAIR/SHARE with your neighbor your line, and why it is important to the story!

4 Corners Activity! On the four corners of the room, there are various responses.

I. Agree!

II. Disagree!

III. Maybe ?

IV. Don’t Know!?

As a class, we will respond to 5 various statements. We will not use our words to respond. Instead, we will walk towards the corner of the room to show our individual responses. Answer honestly and from the heart! Let’s talk to our partners! Why did you choose this response? Let’s share aloud!

Statement #1

If someone in my family needed help, I would do

everything in my power to help them. I know what it

feels like to need help from another.

Statement #2

If my friends were fighting, I would try to help them settle their differences because I have been in a similar

situation.

Statement #3

If a family in my neighborhood was

struggling to pay rent, I would have my own family

help them financially. I know what it is to struggle.

Statement #4

If I heard people in another country were struggling for

food, shelter, and clothing, I would do everything in my

power to change their living conditions.

Statement #5

I show compassion to all people at home, in my

school, and in my community!

Let’s Read! • Choose your silent reading book and

EMPATHY…the ability to mutually experience the

thoughts, emotions, and direct experience of others.

It goes beyond sympathy, which is a feeling of care and understanding for the suffering of

others. Both words have similar usage but differ in their emotional meaning.

Video Clip:What is Empathy?

Our Essential Questions!• What does it mean

to put ourselves in someone else’s

shoes? • How do the struggles

of another human being allow us to see the world through a new perspective?

What’s the Point?

4 Corners Activity!

What did you notice about the questions?

How did they make you feel?

How do they relate to empathy?

Reflection!

Answer either our ESSENTIAL QUESTION or the WHATS THE

POINT?

&

What does EMPATHY mean to you?

Let’s Read! • Choose your silent reading book and

let’s read for 15 minutes! • As you read, look for one important line

or quote that you will share with a partner after the reading!

• After the reading, you will PAIR/SHARE with your neighbor your line, and why it is important to the story!

Let’s Read! • The book I am reading is….• The author of the book is…• One important line from the

book is… “……………..”• This line is important to the story

because….

Purpose!• We are looking at poetry and “putting

ourselves in someone else’s shoes.”• We want to analyze the poem by

annotating to create an understanding of what the poem is saying!

• We want to tie this poem back to empathy! How does it relate to our guiding questions?

“The Little Boy with His Hands Up”by Yala Korwin

• Highlight/Box unfamiliar words• Look at figurative language (Simile: “Your

open palms raised in the air/ like two white doves” Lines 1,2)

• Underline any questions the author is asking throughout the poem (“Eight? Seven?” Lines 6, 7)

• After each stanza, write one sentence on the right hand side of the poem, summarizing the stanza in your own words!

Let’s Discuss! • In groups of 3, discuss your annotations! • Share with your partners your unfamiliar words

(can you define the words as a group?), any figurative language you found (what is author’s intent?), questions posed by the author, or any questions you might have yourself about the poem?

• * Respect your partner by listening, no cross talk • PERSON A shares first…• PERSON B…shares next• PERSON C... shares last• Group discussion…. (I think/I believe that…)

Dig Deeper! • Let’s respond to our “Digging

Deeper with Poetry" questions!

• Let’s share our responses in groups!

Let’s Reflect!

Q: How can poetry create empathy?

(Poetry creates empathy by........because......)
